Background: Dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome are two most common gynaecological problem leading to college absenteeism seen among female medical students. Aim of the study was to evaluate the factors associated and prevalence of dysmenorrhoea and PMS and its effects on the quality of life, particularly absenteeism from college in female medical students. The health care profession has an obligation to provide and to promote education on menstruation and related subjects.Methods: This is a prospective study, conducted on 100 MBBS students studying in a medical college at Mangalore. All participants were given a preformed questionnaire to complete. Dysmenorrhea was assessed based on WaLiDD scoring system. Diagnosis of PMS in the present study was made according to diagnosis criteria proposed by American College of obstetrician and gynecology. The severity of their condition was assessed based on their absenteeism from college/classes.Results: The average age of the participants was 21 year±1 year. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 45% and that of the pre-menstrual syndrome was 68%. Pre-menstrual syndrome (p = 0.05) is significantly associated with overweight, obesity and physical inactivity but not the same for dysmenorrhea. 73% and 60% of students consumed junk food suffered from PMS and dysmenorrhea respectively, 40% of students with dysmenorrhea reported limitation of daily activities and significantly associated with college absenteeism (p = 0.005). The most frequent somatic symptom of PMS in this study was breast tenderness (41%) and affective symptom was irritability (35%).Conclusions: Dysmenorrhea and PMS is highly prevalent among female medical students; it is related to college/class absenteeism. Unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle could be the attributing factors which has to be addressed by health education in order to improve the quality of life and academic performance by the medical students.

Objectives: This research aims to identify the effects of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms on the school exam scores in medical students. Methods: This cross-sectional study was designed at Sakarya University School of Medicine The study included medical students who were in the first, second, and third year of class. In this study, there were 193 male and 100 female students. The study investigated how PMS symptoms affected medical student’s exam scores and school success. All exam scores were recorded during the two-consecutive semester so duration of study was one year. Results: There were 100 female students, and they had five different committee exams for one year. Female student’s exam scores were significantly higher for four committees and an average score of all year. The mean age of female students was 19.9 ±1.5. Acne, nausea/vomiting, sleeping, abdominal bloating, and prurience change had significantly different exam scores compared to the group without these symptoms. Students with acne had substantially higher exam scores than without acne; inversely, the other four symptoms negatively affected exam scores. Conclusion: Some of the PMS symptoms can be more annoying and should change the quality of life more than the other symptoms, so we should define these symptoms to improve our student’s quality of life and school success. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.37.4.3931 How to cite this:Bilir F, Akdemir R, Bilir C. Introduction: Medical students, susceptible to sleep disorders, have irregular sleep-awake cycle, with repercussions on the quality of life and reduced academic performance, often with greater incidence of psychiatric disorders, estimated at 15% to 25% during your academic training. Objective: To evaluate the sleep habits in students of medical school in a private college of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Method: This subset study is a part of an observational study with cross-sectional delineation, with data collected through the application of an anonymous questionnaire, where they were asked about the number (and modification) of hours they sleep daily, in addition to reports of “stress and anxiety”. These data collected formed the basis of an instrument for assessing the quality of life on the medical students of this College. Results: We analyzed data from 481 students: 82 (17%) at the first year, 118 (24.5%) at the second year, 99 (20.6%) at the third, 64 (13.3%) and 118 (24.5%) within the fifth and sixth years. The average age was 21.7 years (16-42) and 306 (63.6%) of female gender. As for the hours of sleep, 445 students (92.5%) report 5 to 8 hours of sleep, and 216 (44.9%) a minimum of 6 hours. In the sleep of the weekends, 394 (81.9%) reported change in the number of hours and, 313 (65.1%) referred to a reduction after the entrance into college. It was reported "some level of stress and anxiety,“ not related to the least number of hours sleepping (0.07). Comparing the data obtained among the 199 students of the first and second years (62.8% female-group A) to 117 at fifth and sixth years (70.9% female-group B), we observed similarity in relation to (1) number of 5 to 8 hours sleepping (A 92.9% x 90.5% B), (2) change the hours of sleepping on the weekends (A 81.9% x 79.5% B), and (3) reduction of sleepping hours after the entrance into College (A 81.9% x 78.6% B). With regard to the report of "stress and anxiety”, we observed statistically significant difference between the groups (A 100% x 88% B, p < 0.03). Conclusion: The change in lifestyle imposed on joining a new school learning model, generates anxiety and loss of sleep hours among students. The development of resilience and adaptation to change, both individual and institutional, may have been responsible to varying degrees of stress.

<p>Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a set of affective, behavioral and physical symptoms with appear in the luteal phase that could affect productivity and quality of life. PMS in adolescents could affect academic performance, such as a decreasing in concentration, failed the exam and absenteeism in the class. The objective was to evaluate the prevalence of PMS and determine its effect on quality of life among female health science students. This cross-sectional study was conducted between July-September 2017 on nursing female students of Health Science Collage “Karya Husada Semarang”, Central a Java, Indonesia. Students were enrolled 207 from first to fourth grade using WHOQOL–BREF form to determine quality of life. Inclusion criteria were having regular menstrual cycles (21-35 days) at least three period. Descriptive analysis and Mann Whitney tests were used for statistical analyses. The prevalence of PMS was found to be 60.8%. Physical health, psychological, social relationship, and environment domain were significantly higher in females with PMS (for each one P &lt; 0.05).</p>

Abstract The study aimed to investigate the relationships between academic motivation and the psychological well-being of 1st-year medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The total number of respondents in the cross-sectional study was 273. Intrinsic motivation was positively correlated with fear of COVID-19 and negatively correlated with psychological collapse and negative changes in quality of life due to the COVID-19. Extrinsic motivation positively associated with fear of COVID-19. Amotivation positively correlated with psychological collapse and negative changes in quality of life. In conclusion, COVID-19-related changes in quality of life and psychological destruction were predictors of academic motivation among 1st-year medical students.

La salud mental de estudiantes universitarios es un motivo de investigación a nivel internacional. El objetivo de este estudio fue estimar la prevalencia de ansiedad, depresión y estado de salud autopercibida de los estudiantes de medicina de la Universidad Miguel Hernández y analizar su asociación con diferentes variables sociodemográficas y del estilo de vida. Para ello, se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal de estudiantes de medicina de 1º a 6º curso de la Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche durante el curso 2019-20. Se utilizaron la Escala Visual Analógica (EVA) del European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), la Escala de Ansiedad y Depresión de Goldberg (EADG), el estudio Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea (PREDIMED), el Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) y el Test de Fagerström. Todos los cuestionarios están validados en España. Para el análisis se ajustaron modelos logísticos multivariantes. Fueron encuestados 474 estudiantes. La tasa de respuesta global fue del 55.26%. Un 68.1% de la muestra eran mujeres. Se estimó una prevalencia de probable ansiedad del 54.9%, probable depresión del 60.9% y probable ansiedad o depresión del 73.3%. La salud autopercibida regular-mala-muy mala fue del 8.9%. Se detectó una asociación estadísticamente significativa con el sexo, la edad, el curso académico, el municipio de residencia, el tipo de alimentación, la actividad física y el consumo de tóxicos. Como conclusión, los estudiantes de medicina de la Universidad Miguel Hernández presentaron una prevalencia alta de probable ansiedad y depresión. Se observaron diferencias en función del sexo, curso académico, tipo de alimentación y consumo de tóxicos. The mental health of university students is a reason for international research. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of anxiety, depression and self-perceived health status of medical students from the Miguel Hernandez University and analyze their association with different sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. We did a cross-sectional descriptive study of medical students from 1st to 6th year of the Miguel Hernandez University during the 2019-20 academic year. They were used the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), the Goldberg Anxiety and Depression Scale (GADS), the Mediterranean Diet Prevention study (PREDIMED), the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) and the Fagerström Test were used. All the questionnaires are validated in Spain. For the analysis, multivariate logistic models were adjusted. They were surveyed 474 students. The overall response rate was 55.26%. 68.1% of the sample were women. A prevalence of probable anxiety of 54.9%; probable depression of 60.9% and probable anxiety or depression of 73.3% was estimated. Regular-bad-very bad self-perceived health was only 8.9%. A statistically significant association was detected between the aforementioned variables and sex, age, academic year, municipality of residence, type of diet, physical activity and consumption of toxics. The medical students of the Miguel Hernandez University presented a high prevalence of probable anxiety and depression. Differences were observed based on sex, academic year, type of diet and consumption of toxic drugs.
