Introduction: Dengue virus (DENV) affects over half the world’s population in 112 countries, and dengue fever (DF) is the second largest arthropod borne infectious global hazard after malaria with complications like Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) accounting for significant morbidity and mortality world over. Pakistan is significantly affected with DENV infection and to-date no study identifying risk factors associated with complications of DF has been done. Methods: 997 confirmed cases of DF were collected in a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan and their clinical and biochemical data were collected. Univariate, multivariate and logistics regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with development of DHF and DSS. Results: Bleeding OR 70.7 (CI 38.4-129.9), deranged liver function test OR 1.9 (CI 0.97-0.99), platelet count on admission less than 50,000 x109/L OR 0.16 (CI 0.13-0.19), presence of urinary red blood cells OR 1.4 (CI 0.179-0.900) and presence of urinary protein OR 1.1 (CI 0.191-0.974) were related to development of DHF and DSS.

Background: Dengue has become endemic in Bangladesh since 2000. The cases are being encountered each year particularly in urban areas. Thus, Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and other cities are commonly affected areas. We sought to get a profile of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in a tertiary care hospital in the Dhaka city.Methods: This direct observational study was undertaken from June to October 2008 among the hospital admitted patients with a diagnosis of DHF.Result: Out of 55 patients with DHF, 87.27% came from urban areas. About 43.64% patients showed various types of active bleeding in association with different clinical features. 100% patients had relative bradycardia. Tourniquet test was positive in 43.63% patients. IgM and/or IgG antibody titer to dengue virus were positive in 85% cases.Conclusion: The clinical picture of Dengue is not as diverse as other regions of the world and the National guideline is till now found to be effective in adequate management,   doi:10.3329/jom.v10i1.1996   J Medicine 2009; 10: 12-15

Background: the present study was under taken to determine the role of CA-125 in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA), to prevent its complications and also in preventing negative appendicectomies in tertiary care hospital. Methods: The study was conducted at a tertiary care and research center between 01/03/2018 to 30/06/2019. Patients admitted to the surgery department with diagnosis of AA were considered for the study. After informed consent, a, standardized history was obtained as a case Performa. Serum samples from all the cases with clinical diagnosis of AA were obtained and stored. Only the cases with histopathologically approved AA were included in the study. Cases operated for clinical diagnosis of AA, but not histopathologically proven AA was not included in the study. CA125 levels in cases with definitive diagnosis of AA were measured. Results: In present study, ROC curve analysis revealed the sensitivity of 87.27 % and specificity of 90.91 % when the CA 125 cut-off value of > 16.8 was taken to diagnose acute appendicitis. AUC was 0.911 with a standard error of 0.0292. Conclusion: In this study we have observed that CA125 showed a positive correlation with acute appendicitis, that was statistically not significant (P>0.05). We didn’t evaluate the correlation with the disease severity. We consider that CA125 can be used as a marker in acute appendicitis cases although further research is still needed.
