Abstract A finite element model was developed to simulate the tire-rim interface. Elastomers were modeled by nonlinear incompressible elements, whereas plies were simulated by cord-rubber composite elements. Gap elements were used to simulate the opening between tire and rim at zero inflation pressure. This opening closed when the inflation pressure was increased gradually. The predicted distribution of contact pressure at the tire-rim interface agreed very well with the available experimental measurements. Several variations of the tire-rim interference fit were analyzed.

This work is devoted to the formulation and construction of an analytical solution to the problem of contact between a cylindrical viscoelastic aging pipe with an internal thin coating and an insert having a complex shape placed inside the pipe with an interference fit. In practice, the presence of such coatings is required, for example, to protect the main structure from aggressive external or internal environments, for its electrical insulation, etc. The manufacturing process of the inner coating determines its possible heterogeneity (dependence of properties on coordinates). An insert placed inside a pipe can have a complex profile that has a rapidly changing function. Taking these features into account is important when analyzing the stress-strain state of pipes with an internal coating. Using an approach based on the use of special basis functions and the type of solution, a representation for the contact stresses in the pipe in the region of the rigid insert is obtained. This approach makes it possible to distinguish functions that describe the properties of the inner coating and the shape of the outer profile of the insert in the form of separate terms and factors in the expression for the contact stresses in the insert region. Therefore, in order to achieve high accuracy when carrying out calculations, it is sufficient to restrict ourselves to a relatively small number of terms

The theoretical substantiation of the method of relative interchangeability in cylindrical joints with preload is given. Gears are commonly used in transmission systems to adjust velocity and torque. An integral gear or an interference fit could be used in a gearbox. Integral gears are mostly preferred as driving gear for a compact design to reduce the weight of the system. Interference fit makes the replacement of damaged gear possible and re-use of the shaft compared to the integral shaft. However, internal pressure occurs between mating surfaces of the components mated. This internal pressure affects the stress distribution at the root and bottom land of the gear. In this case, gear parameters should be re-considered to assure gear life while reducing the size of the gear. In this study, interference fitted gear-shaft assembly was examined numerically. The effects of rim thickness, profile shifting, module and fit tolerance on bending stress occurring at the root of the gear were investigated to optimize gear design parameters. Finite element models were in good agreement with analytical solutions. Results showed that the rim thickness of the gear is the main parameter in terms of tangential stress occurring at the bottom land of the gear. Positive profile shifting reduces the tangential stress while the pitch diameter of the gear remains constant. Also, lower tolerance class could be selected to moderate stress for small rim thickness.

AbstractWind turbines (WT) must be further optimized concerning availability and reliability. One of the major reasons of WT downtime is the failure of gearbox bearings. Some of these failures occur, due to the ring creep phenomenon, which is mostly detected in the planetary bearings. The ring creep phenomenon describes a relative movement of the outer ring to the planetary gear. In order to improve the understanding of ring creep, the finite element method (FEM) is used to simulate ring creep in planetary gears. First, a sensitivity analysis is carried out on a small bearing size (NU205), to characterize relevant influence parameters for ring creep—considered parameters are teeth module, coefficient of friction, interference fit and normal tooth forces. Secondly, a full-scale planetary bearing (SL185030) of a 1MW WT is simulated and verified with experimental data.

Abstract Background The interactions between nanoparticles and the biological environment have long been studied, with toxicological assays being the most common experimental route. In parallel, recent growing evidence has brought into light the important role that cell mechanics play in numerous cell biological processes. However, despite the prevalence of nanotechnology applications in biology, and in particular the increased use of magnetic nanoparticles for cell therapy and imaging, the impact of nanoparticles on the cells’ mechanical properties remains poorly understood. Results Here, we used a parallel plate rheometer to measure the impact of magnetic nanoparticles on the viscoelastic modulus G*(f) of individual cells. We show how the active uptake of nanoparticles translates into cell stiffening in a short time scale (< 30 min), at the single cell level. The cell stiffening effect is however less marked at the cell population level, when the cells are pre-labeled under a longer incubation time (2 h) with nanoparticles. 24 h later, the stiffening effect is no more present. Imaging of the nanoparticle uptake reveals almost immediate (within minutes) nanoparticle aggregation at the cell membrane, triggering early endocytosis, whereas nanoparticles are almost all confined in late or lysosomal endosomes after 2 h of uptake. Remarkably, this correlates well with the imaging of the actin cytoskeleton, with actin bundling being highly prevalent at early time points into the exposure to the nanoparticles, an effect that renormalizes after longer periods. Conclusions Overall, this work evidences that magnetic nanoparticle internalization, coupled to cytoskeleton remodeling, contributes to a change in the cell mechanical properties within minutes of their initial contact, leading to an increase in cell rigidity. This effect appears to be transient, reduced after hours and disappearing 24 h after the internalization has taken place.

The impeller mounted onto the compressor shaft assembly via interference fit is one of the key components of a centrifugal compressor stage. A suitable fit tolerance needs to be considered in the structural design. A locomotive-type turbocharger compressor with 24 blades under combined centrifugal and interference-fit loading was considered in the numerical analysis. The FE parametric quadratic programming (PQP) method which was developed based on the parametric variational principle (PVP) was used for the analysis of stress distribution of 3D elastoplastic frictional contact of impeller-shaft sleeve-shaft. The solution of elastoplastic frictional contact problems belongs to the unspecified boundary problems where the interaction between two kinds of nonlinearities should occur. The effect of fit tolerance, rotational speed and the contact stress distribution on the contact stress was discussed in detail in the numerical computation. The study play a referenced role in deciding the proper fit tolerance and improving design and manufacturing technology of compressor impellers.

Current design procedures for complicated three-dimensional structural components with component interactions may not necessarily result in optimum designs. The wrist pin end design of the connecting rod with an interference fit is governed by the stress singularity in the region where the wrist pin breaks contact with the connecting rod. Similar problems occur in a wide variety of structural components which involve interference fits. For a better understanding of the problems associated with obtaining optimum designs for this important class of structural interaction only the design problems associated with the wrist pin end of the rod are addressed in this study. This paper demonstrates a procedure for designing a functional and minimum weight wrist pin end of an automobile engine connecting rod with an interference fit wrist pin. Current procedures for Finite Element Method (FEM) model generation in complicated three-dimensional components are very time consuming especially in the presence of stress singularities. Furthermore the iterative nature of the design process makes the process of developing an optimum design very expensive. This design procedure uses a generic modeler to generate the FEM model based on the values of the design variables. It uses the NASTRAN finite element program for structural analysis. A stress concentration factor approach is used to obtain realistic stresses in the region of the stress singularity. For optimization, the approximate optimization strategy in the COPES/CONMIN program is used to generate an approximate design surface, determine the design sensitivities for constrained function minimization and obtain the optimum design. This proposed design strategy is fully automated and requires only an initial design to generate the optimum design. It does not require analysis code modifications to compute the design sensitivities and requires very few costly NASTRAN analyses. The connecting rod design problem was solved as an eight design variable problem with five constraints. A weight reduction of nearly 27 percent was achieved over an existing design and required only thirteen NASTRAN analyses. It is felt that this design strategy can be effectively used in an engineering environment to generate optimum designs of complicated three-dimensional components.
