This issue of Brain Impairment celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment through an invited Guest editorial by Dr Jan Ewing. Dr Ewing was a founding member of ASSBI, authored the first president's address to be published in Brain Impairment (Volume 1, Issue 1), and is the long-term chair of the ASSBI Publications Committee. Dr Ewing draws upon her long experience to address the theme ‘looking behind to look ahead’ in the Guest Editorial. A poem composed by Dr Ewing, titled Reminiscence, celebrates the past 40 years of ASSBI and is reproduced in this special issue. The remainder of this issue consists of five original research papers addressing stroke, followed by the presidential address and the usual other elements of each year's final issue including the abstracts from the 2017 ASSBI conference.

The Geological Survey of Greenland (GGU) continued in 1986 the systematic investigation of the geology of Greenland. The work comprises geological mapping and basic research as well as applied geology and geophysics (fig. 1). The long term purpose is to establish the necessary geological background for evaluation of the potential of the non-living resources. The scientific and technical staff of 112 based in Copenhagen and 87 participating in the field work in Greenland carried out programmes of geological mapping and investigation, glaciological investigations, and mineral and oil assessments which included geochemical and geophysical methods. In April 1986 GGU celebrated its 40th anniversary. A special publication dedicated to GGU's former director, K. Ellitsgaard-Rasmussen, was issued which covers different aspects of the Survey's work in the developments in Greenland geology over the past ten years.

This special issue took this opportunity to invite researchers to contribute their original research work and review articles to this Special Issue on “Recent Trends in Coatings and Thin Film: Modeling and Application” to be published in Coatings. The goal of this Special Issue was to address challenges and current issues that either advance the state-of-the-art of experimental, numerical, and theoretical methodologies, or extends the bounds of existing methodologies to new contributions that are related to coatings and thin film containing whichever, magnetic, multiphase, material science, nanotechnology, surfaces, interfaces, and mechanical sensing properties. In response to the call for papers, a total of 58 papers were submitted for possible publication. After comprehensive peer review, only 27 papers qualified for acceptance for final publication. The rest of 31 papers could not be accommodated. The submissions may have been technically correct, but were not considered appropriate for the scope of this special issue. The authors are from 17 geographically distributed countries, such as China, Spain, Romania, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi, UAE, Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Lebanon, Egypt, India, and Kuwait, etc. This reflects the great impact of the proposed topic and the effective organization of the guest editorial team of this Special Issue.

This special issue of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education was prepared to help celebrate the 25th anniversary year of the journal. President Mary Lindquist appointed an ad hoc task force to develop activities to mark this 25th year. Input was solicited from former editorial board members and editors and from others throughout mathematics education. We came to a recognition that doing something to reflect on the journal's journey over the past 25 years, while underscoring the scholarship that guides our work, would be a vehicle to help look ahead to the next 25 years.

Abstract In situ and operando spectroscopic methods play a fundamental role in a variety of different fields of modern science. In particular, as energy and environmental science have become increasingly important recently, the need of in situ and operando spectroscopic methods has also increased significantly. Therefore, we felt it was time to have a special issue focused on such techniques and for which the aim is ‘to merge the research communities investigating catalytic and (photo)electrochemical interfaces with different in situ/operando spectroscopic techniques, to share recent results, experimental methods, and future perspectives’, as we reported in the scope of this special issue. With its 23 original research papers and 2 topical reviews, spanning from heterogeneous catalysis to photoelectrochemistry, we believe that the outcome of this special issue fulfills the aforementioned aim.

AbstractOver the past four decades there have been significant advances in our understanding of autism, yet services for autistic adults continue to lag far behind those for children, and prospects for employment and independent living remain poor. Adult outcomes also vary widely and while cognitive and language abilities are important prognostic indicators, the influence of social, emotional, familial and many other factors remains uncertain. For this special issue marking the 40th anniversary of DSM-III, the present paper describes the changing perspectives of autism in adulthood that have occurred over this period, explores individual and wider environmental factors related to outcome, and suggests ways in which services need to be changed to improve the future for adults living with autism.
