A variational derivation of the geostrophic momentum approximation

AbstractThis paper demonstrates that the shallow water semigeostrophic equations arise from a degenerate second-order Hamilton principle of very special structure. The associated Euler–Lagrange operator factors into a fast and a slow first-order operator; restricting to the slow part yields the geostrophic momentum approximation as balanced dynamics. While semigeostrophic theory has been considered variationally before, this structure appears to be new. It leads to a straightforward derivation of the geostrophic momentum approximation and its associated potential vorticity law. Our observations further affirm, from a different point of view, the known difficulty in generalizing the semigeostrophic equations to the case of a spatially varying Coriolis parameter.

Abstract A global version of the equivalent barotropic vorticity equation is derived for the one-layer shallow-water equations on a sphere. The equation has the same form as the corresponding beta plane version, but with one important difference: the stretching (Cressman) term in the expression of the potential vorticity retains its full dependence on f 2, where f is the Coriolis parameter. As a check of the resulting system, the dynamics of linear Rossby waves are considered. It is shown that these waves are rather accurate approximations of the westward-propagating waves of the second class of the original shallow-water equations. It is also concluded that for Rossby waves with short meridional wavelengths the factor f 2 in the stretching term can be replaced by the constant value f02, where f0 is the Coriolis parameter at ±45° latitude.

A similarity solution to the long-wave shallow-water equations is obtained for a density current (reduced gravity = g′, Coriolis parameter = f) propagating alongshore (y = 0). The potential vorticity q = f/H1 is uniform in −∞ < x [les ] xnose(t), 0 < y [les ] L(x, t), and the nose of this advancing potential vorticity front displaces fluid of greater q = f/H0, which is located at L < y < ∞. If L0 = L(−∞, t), the nose point with L(xnose(t), t) = 0 moves with velocity Unose = √g′H0 φ, where φ is a function of H1/H0, f2L20/g′H0. The assumptions made in the similarity theory are verified by an initial value solution of the complete reduced-gravity shallow-water equations. The latter also reveal the new effect of a Kelvin shock wave colliding with a potential vorticity front, as is confirmed by a laboratory experiment. Also confirmed is the expansion wave structure of the intrusion, but the observed values of Unose are only in qualitative agreement; the difference is attributed to the presence of small-scale (non-hydrostatic) turbulence in the laboratory experiment but not in the numerical solutions.

Abstract A second-order diffusion scheme is developed for the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) global shallow-water model. The shallow-water equations are discretized on the cubed sphere tiled with quadrilateral elements relying on a nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. In the viscous shallow-water model the diffusion terms (viscous fluxes) are approximated with two different approaches: 1) the element-wise localized discretization without considering the interelement contributions and 2) the discretization based on the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method. In the LDG formulation the advection–diffusion equation is solved as a first-order system. All of the curvature terms resulting from the cubed-sphere geometry are incorporated into the first-order system. The effectiveness of each diffusion scheme is studied using the standard shallow-water test cases. The approach of element-wise localized discretization of the diffusion term is easy to implement but found to be less effective, and with relatively high diffusion coefficients, it can adversely affect the solution. The shallow-water tests show that the LDG scheme converges monotonically and that the rate of convergence is dependent on the coefficient of diffusion. Also the LDG scheme successfully eliminates small-scale noise, and the simulated results are smooth and comparable to the reference solution.

AbstractThis paper aims to outline an analysis and interpretation of the process that led to First-Order Logic and its consolidation as a core system of modern logic. We begin with an historical overview of landmarks along the road to modern logic, and proceed to a philosophical discussion casting doubt on the possibility of a purely rational justification of the actual delimitation of First-Order Logic. On this basis, we advance the thesis that a certain historical tradition was essential to the emergence of modern logic; this traditional context is analyzed as consisting in some guiding principles and, particularly, a set of exemplars (i.e., paradigmatic instances). Then, we proceed to interpret the historical course of development reviewed in section 1, which can broadly be described as a two-phased movement of expansion and then restriction of the scope of logical theory. We shall try to pinpoint ambivalencies in the process, and the main motives for subsequent changes. Among the latter, one may emphasize the spirit of modern axiomatics, the situation of foundational insecurity in the 1920s, the resulting desire to find systems well-behaved from a proof-theoretical point of view, and the metatheoretical results of the 1930s. Not surprisingly, the mathematical and, more specifically, the foundational context in which First-Order Logic matured will be seen to have played a primary role in its shaping.Mathematical logic is what logic, through twenty-five centuries and a few transformations, has become today. Small amplitude waves on a shallow layer of water are studied from the point of view used in aerodynamic sound theory. It is shown that many aspects of the generation and propagation of water waves are similar to those of sound waves in air. Certain differences are also discussed. It is concluded that shallow water simulation can be employed in the study of some aspects of aerodynamically generated sound.

We transform near-local Hamiltonian balanced models (HBMs) describing nearly geostrophic fluid motion (with constant Coriolis parameter) into multi-symplectic (MS) systems. This allows us to determine conservation of Lagrangian momentum, energy and potential vorticity for Salmon's L 1 dynamics; a similar approach works for other near-local balanced models (such as the -model). The MS approach also enables us to determine a class of systems that have a contact structure similar to that of the semigeostrophic model. The contact structure yields a contact transformation that makes the problem of front formation tractable. The new class includes the first local model with a variable Coriolis parameter that preserves all of the most useful geometric features of the semigeostrophic model.

The reaction processes in which a one-step transition is forbidden are analyzed from the point of view of the first order perturbation theory. The interference between two competing two-step reaction paths is found to be always constructive. A qualitative explanation of the experimentally observed reaction intensities is presented.

One of the mathematical models describing the behavior of two horizontally infinite adjoining layers of an ideal incompressible liquid under a solid cover moving at different speeds is investigated. At a large difference in the layer velocities, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability occurs, which leads to a distortion of the interface. At the initial point in time, the interface is not necessarily flat. From a mathematical point of view, the behavior of the liquid layers is described by a system of four quasilinear equations, either hyperbolic or elliptic, in partial derivatives of the first order. Some type shallow water equations are used to construct the model. In the simple version of the model considered in this paper, in the spatially one-dimensional case, the unknowns are the boundary between the liquid layers h(x,t) and the difference in their velocities γ(x,t). The main attention is paid to the case of elliptic equations when |h|&lt;1 and γ&gt;1. An evolutionary Cauchy problem with arbitrary sufficiently smooth initial data is set for the system of equations. The explicit dependence of the Riemann invariants on the initial variables of the problem is indicated. To solve the Cauchy problem formulated in terms of Riemann invariants, a variant of the hodograph method based on a certain conservation law is used. This method allows us to convert a system of two quasilinear partial differential equations of the first order to a single linear partial differential equation of the second order with variable coefficients. For a linear equation, the Riemann-Green function is specified, which is used to construct a two-parameter implicit solution to the original problem. The explicit solution of the problem is constructed on the level lines (isochrons) of the implicit solution by solving a certain Cauchy problem for a system of ordinary differential equations. As a result, the original Cauchy problem in partial derivatives of the first order is transformed to the Cauchy problem for a system of ordinary differential equations, which is solved by numerical methods. Due to the bulkiness of the expression for the Riemann-Green function, some asymptotic approximation of the problem is considered, and the results of calculations, and their analysis are presented.

We present and analyze a Virtual Element Method (VEM) for the Laplace-Beltrami equation on a surface in ℝ3, that we call Surface Virtual Element Method (SVEM). The method combines the Surface Finite Element Method (SFEM) (Dziuk, Eliott, G. Dziuk and C.M. Elliott., Acta Numer. 22 (2013) 289–396.) and the recent VEM (Beirão da Veiga et al., Math. Mod. Methods Appl. Sci. 23 (2013) 199–214.) in order to allow for a general polygonal approximation of the surface. We account for the error arising from the geometry approximation and in the case of polynomial order k = 1 we extend to surfaces the error estimates for the interpolation in the virtual element space. We prove existence, uniqueness and first order H1 convergence of the numerical solution.We highlight the differences between SVEM and VEM from the implementation point of view. Moreover, we show that the capability of SVEM of handling nonconforming and discontinuous meshes can be exploited in the case of surface pasting. We provide some numerical experiments to confirm the convergence result and to show an application of mesh pasting.
