Highly resolved experimental results of the separated flow in a channel with streamwise periodic constrictions

The understanding and accurate prediction of turbulent flow separation on smooth surfaces is still a challenging task because the separation and the reattachment locations are not fixed in space and time. Consequently, reliable experimental data are essential for the validation of numerical flow simulations and the characterization and analysis of the complex flow physics. However, the uncertainty of the existing near-wall flow measurements make a precise analysis of the near-wall flow features, such as separation/reattachment locations and other predicted near-wall flow features which are under debate, often impossible. Therefore, the periodic hill experiment at TU Munich (ERCOFTAC test case 81) was repeated using high resolution particle image velocimetry and particle tracking velocimetry. The results confirm the strong effect of the spatial resolution on the near-wall flow statistics. Furthermore, it is shown that statistically stable values of the turbulent flow variables can only be obtained for averaging times which are challenging to realize with highly resolved large eddy simulation and direct numerical simulation techniques. Additionally, the analysis implies that regions of correlated velocity fluctuations with rather uniform streamwise momentum exist in the flow. Their size in the mean flow direction can be larger than the hill spacing. The possible impact of the correlated turbulent motion on the wake region is discussed, as this interaction might be important for the understanding and control of the flow separation dynamics on smooth bodies.

An experimental investigation on a linear turbine cascade has been carried out to study the effects induced by incidence angle and pitch-chord ratio variations on the three-dimensional turbulent flow downstream of the cascade. Previous mean flow measurements have shown how these parameters influence the energy losses and the secondary velocity field. Now detailed hot wire measurements have been performed on a plane located at 22 per cent of an axial chord downstream of the trailing edge, in order to determine the distribution of all the six Reynolds stress tensor components, for three incidence conditions (i = −30, 0, +30 deg) and for three pitch-chord ratios (s/c = 0.58, 0.72, 0.87). Significant changes of the turbulent flow structure, interesting magnitude and distribution of the Reynolds stress components, have been observed for all the considered test conditions. The analysis of the results shows the correlation between the mean flow features and the turbulent quantities and the relationship between the energy loss production and the blade loading variation. The presented data are also suitable for assessing the behaviour of turbulence models in complex 3D flows, on design and off-design conditions.

The study of flows with a high degree of turbulence in boundary layers, near-wall jets, gas curtains, separated flows behind various obstacles, as well as during combustion is of great importance for increasing energy efficiency of the flow around various elements in the ducts of gas-dynamic installations. This paper gives some general characteristics of experimental work on the study of friction and heat transfer on a smooth surface, in near-wall jets, and gas curtains under conditions of increased free-stream turbulence. Taking into account the significant effect of high external turbulence on dynamics and heat transfer of separated flows, a similar effect on the flow behind various obstacles is analyzed. First of all, the classical cases of flow separation behind a single backward-facing step and a rib are considered. Then, more complex cases of the flow around a rib oriented at different angles to the flow are analyzed, as well as a system of ribs and a transverse trench with straight and inclined walls in a turbulent flow around them. The features of separated flow in a turbulized stream around a cylinder, leading to an increase in the width of the vortex wake, frequency of vortex separation, and increase in the average heat transfer coefficient are analyzed. The experimental results of the author are compared with data of other researchers. The structure of separated flow at high turbulence—characteristic dimensions of the separation region, parameters of the mixing layer, and pressure distribution—are compared with the conditions of low-turbulent flow. Much attention is paid to thermal characteristics: temperature profiles across the shear layer, temperature distributions over the surface, and local and average heat transfer coefficients. It is shown that external turbulence has a much stronger effect on the separated flow than on the boundary layer on a flat surface. For separated flows, its intensifying effect on heat transfer is more pronounced behind a rib than behind a step. The factor of heat transfer intensification by external turbulence is most pronounced in the transverse cavity and in the system of ribs.

This paper describes an investigation into the response of both the pulsed-wire anemometer and the hot-wire anemometer in a highly turbulent flow. The first part of the paper is concerned with a theoretical study of some aspects of the response of these instruments in a highly turbulent flow. It is shown that, under normal operating conditions, the pulsed-wire anemometer should give mean velocity and longitudinal turbulent intensity estimates to an accuracy of better than 10% without any restriction on turbulence level. However, to attain this accuracy in measurements of turbulent intensities normal to the mean flow direction, there is a lower limit on the turbulent intensity of about 50%. An analysis is then carried out of the behaviour of the hot-wire anemometer in a highly turbulent flow. It is found that the large errors that are known to develop are very sensitive to the precise structure of the turbulence, so that even qualitative use of hot-wire data in such flows is not feasible. Some brief comments on the possibility of improving the accuracy of the hot-wire anemometer are then given.The second half of the paper describes some comparative measurements in the highly turbulent flow immediately downstream of a normal flat plate. It is shown that, although it is not possible to interpret the hot-wire results on their own, it is possible to calculate the hot-wire response with a surprising degree of accuracy using the results from the pulsed-wire anemometer. This provides a rather indirect but none the less welcome check on the accuracy of the pulsed-wire results, which, in this very highly turbulent flow, have a certain interest in their own right.

Most practical flows in engineering applications are turbulent, and exhibit separation. Losses due to separation are undesirable because they generally have adverse effects on performance and efficiency. Therefore, control of turbulent separated flows has been a topic of significant interest as it can reduce separation losses. It is of utmost importance to understand the complex flow dynamics that leads to flow separation and come up with methods of flow control. In the past, passive flow-control was mostly implemented that does not require any additional energy source to reduce separation losses but it leads to increasing viscous losses at higher Reynolds number. More recent work has been focused primarily on active flow-control techniques that can be turned on and off depending on the requirement of flow-control. The present work is focused on implementing flow control using steady suction in the region of flow separation. The present work is Case 3 of the 2004 CFD Validation on Synthetic Jets and Turbulent Separation Control Workshop, http://cfdval2004.larc.nasa.gov/case3.html, conducted by NASA for the flow over a wall-mounted hump. The flow over a hump is an example of a turbulent separated flow. This flow is characterized by a simple geometry, but, nevertheless, is rich in many complex flow phenomena such as shear layer instability, separation, reattachment, and vortex interactions. The baseline case has been successfully simulated by Gan et al., 2007. The flow is simulated at a Reynolds number of 371,600, based on the hump chord length, C, and Mach number of 0.04. The flow control is being achieved via a slot at approximately 65% C by using steady suction. Solutions are presented for the three-dimensional RANS SST, steady and unsteady, turbulence model and DES and LES turbulence modeling approaches. Multiple turbulence modeling approaches help to ascertain what techniques are most appropriate for capturing the physics of this complex separated flow. Second-order accurate time derivatives are used for all implicit unsteady simulation cases. Mean-velocity contours and turbulent kinetic energy contours are examined at different streamwise locations. Detailed comparisons are made of mean and turbulence statistics such as the pressure coefficient, skinfriction coefficient, and Reynolds stress profiles, with experimental results. The location of the reattachment behind the hump is compared with experimental results. The successful control of this turbulent separated flow causes a reduction in the reattachment length, compared with the uncontrolled case. The effects of steady suction on flow separation and reattachment are discussed.

Abstract To accurately measure the near-wall flow by particle image velocimetry (PIV) is a big challenge, especially for the slip boundary condition. Apart from high-precision measurements, an appropriate PIV algorithm is important to resolve the near-wall velocity profile. In our study, single-pixel algorithm is employed to calculate the near-wall flow, which is demonstrated to be capable of accurately resolving the flow velocity near the slip boundary condition. Based on the synthetic particle images, the advantages of the single-pixel algorithm are manifested in comparison with the conventional window correlation algorithm. Specially, the single-pixel algorithm has higher spatial resolution and accuracy, and lower systematic error and random error for the case of slip boundary condition. Furthermore, for experimental verification, micro-PIV measurements are conducted over a liquid-gas interface and the single-pixel algorithm is successfully applied to the calculation of near-wall velocity under the slip boundary condition, especially the negative slip velocity. The current work demonstrates the advantage of the single-pixel algorithm in analyzing the complex flow under the slip boundary condition, such as drag reduction, wall skin friction evaluation and near-wall vortex structure measurement.

Turbulent flow measurements were performed in the wake of a slender axisymmetric body in the presence of a flat plate strut and an image plane crudely representing the "rigid lid" approximation to a free surface. The tests were performed in a wind tunnel at a nominal Reynolds number of 6.0 ⨯ 105. A Yawhead probe was used for the mean flow measurements, and a Constant Temperature Anemometer System with an x-wire probe was used to obtain the turbulent flow characteristics. The presence of the image plane was found to increase the velocity defect and the static pressure as the image plane was approached. A redistribution among the various components of velocity fluctuations was noted near the image plane. The transverse component was enhanced at the expense of the normal component. The image plane also was found to influence the magnitudes and radial spread of turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses. Some interactions between the wake of the axisymmetric body and that of the plate strut were observed. Overall, the mean velocities and the turbulence quantities indicated symmetry about the image plane throughout the wake.

The mean flow and turbulence statistics of the flow through a simplified urban environment, which is an active research area in order to improve the knowledge of turbulent flow in cities, is investigated. This is useful for civil engineering, pedestrian comfort and for health concerns caused by pollutant spreading. In this work, we provide analysis of the turbulence statistics obtained from well-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES). A detailed analysis of this database reveals the impact of the geometry of the urban array on the flow characteristics and provides for a good description of the turbulent features of the flow within a simplified urban environment. The most prominent features of this complex flow include coherent vortical structures such as the so-called arch vortex, the horseshoe vortex and the roof vortex. These structures of the flow have been identified by an analysis of the turbulence statistics. The influence of the geometry of the urban environment (and particularly the street width and the building height) on the overall flow behavior have also been studied. Finally, the well-resolved LES results were compared with the experimental database from Monnier et al. to discuss differences and similarities between the respective urban configurations.

It has been observed that as a fully developed turbulent flow enters a curved bend the anisotropy of the normal stresses near the outer bend (furthest from the centre of the bend curvature) increases. According to the arguments of vorticity generation, a sudden increase in the anisotropy of the normal stresses may lead to the formation of a secondary flow of the second kind. If this secondary motion is to be calculated, then a near-wall Reynolds stress closure that can mimic the anisotropic turbulence behaviour near a wall has to be used. This study presents the results of just such an attempt. In addition, two high Reynolds number closures assuming wall functions in the near-wall region are tested for their ability to replicate the behaviour of the normal stresses in a curved-pipe flow. These two closures differ in their modelling of the pressure-strain terms. Consequently, the effects of near-wall and pressure-strain modelling on curved-pipe flow calculations can be examined. Comparisons are also made with recent curved-pipe flow measurements. The results show that pressure-strain modelling alone is not sufficient to predict the rapid rise of the anisotropy of the normal stresses near the outer bend, and hence the formation of the secondary flow of the second kind. Overall, the near-wall Reynolds stress closure gives a more accurate prediction of the measured mean flow and turbulence statistics, and a realistic calculation of the secondary flow of the second kind near the outer bend.

Due to adverse pressure gradient along the diverging walls of wide-angled diffusers, the attached flow separates from one wall and remains attached permanently to the other wall in a process called stalling. Separated diffuser flows provide a classical case of pressure driven flow separation. Such flows present a very serious challenge to fluid dynamics modelers. This paper provides a data bank contribution for the streamwise mean velocity field and pressure recovery data in wide-angled diffusers. Turbulent mean flow measurements were carried out at Reynolds numbers between 1.07×105 and 2.14×105 based on inlet hydraulic diameter and centerline velocity for diffusers whose divergence angles were between 30 deg and 50 deg. The results presented provide a reliable validation data bank for computational fluid dynamics studies for pressure driven flow separation studies.
