Effects of work passion on turnover intention for Chinese government employees: The dualistic model of passion perspective

AbstractTurnover intention is a negative outcome for an organization. The purpose of this article is to examine the relationships among work passion, subjective well-being, career adaptability, and turnover intention for Chinese government employees. The article consists of an empirical study with a sample of 472 government employees in Shandong Province, China. Participants completed a series of questionnaires in three waves. The results indicate that harmonious passion is negatively related to turnover intention and that obsessive passion is positively related to turnover intention. Additionally, the relationship between harmonious/obsessive passion and turnover is mediated by subjective well-being, and career adaptability moderates the relationship between harmonious/obsessive passion and subjective well-being. Implications are discussed.

Abstract Study Objectives The present research examines the relationship between people’s frequent involvement in an activity they like and find important (i.e., a passion) and the quality of their sleep. Research on the dualistic model of passion has widely documented the relationship between individuals’ type of passion—harmonious versus obsessive—and the quality of their mental and physical health. However, research has yet to examine the relationship between passion and sleep quality. Building on prior research has shown that obsessive (vs harmonious) passion is related to depressive mood symptoms—an important factor associated with sleep problems—we hypothesized that obsessive passion would be associated with overall worse sleep quality, whereas harmonious passion would predict better sleep quality. Methods A sample of 1,506 Americans filled out an online questionnaire on sleep habits and passion. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Hierarchical linear regressions and mediation analyses were carried out with results confirming our hypotheses. Results Obsessive passion for an activity was associated with worse sleep quality, whereas harmonious passion was associated with better sleep quality, adjusting for demographics, the type of passionate activity and its self-reported importance, alcohol and tobacco consumption, BMI, self-reported health, and diagnosed health conditions. The relationship between both types of passion and sleep quality was mediated by depressive mood symptoms. Conclusions Our study presents evidence of a strong relationship between sleep quality and passion, opening the door for future research to create new interventions to improve people’s sleep and, consequently, their well-being.

Purpose This paper aims to examine whether employee subjective well-being acts as a mediator in the relationship between perceived supervisor support and turnover intention within the context of select-service hotels. Design/methodology/approach The sample included hourly employees in select-service hotels in the Midwest USA. The significance of the relationships was assessed using regression, and both the Sobel test and bootstrapping methods were performed to test the mediating effect of subjective well-being on the relationship between perceived supervisor support and turnover intention. Findings The results confirm subjective well-being acted as a partial mediator in the relationship between supervisor support and turnover intention. Employees who perceive higher levels of support from their supervisors are less likely to leave their organizations. At the same time, supervisor support also positively affects subjective well-being, which reduces turnover intention. Practical implications Actions by supervisors’ impact the well-being of their employees, which in turn may influence whether an employee stays with the organization. Organizations could use management training and employee feedback on supervisor support to improve employee support mechanisms. Organizations should also pay attention to improving employee subjective well-being beyond the work place. Improving the well-being of employees and supporting employees can help reduce turnover and may increase employee satisfaction, guest satisfaction and profits. Originality/value This study is the first to show that subjective well-being mediates the relationship between supervisor support and turnover intention; and one of the few within the hospitality context to examine the constructs of subjective well-being, supervisor support and turnover together.

The high turnover rate of new generation employees is becoming an increasingly important issue for business and academia. Based on self-determination theory and conservation of resource theory, our study explores the impact of the inclusive talent development model on the turnover intention of new generation employees and the mediating role of work passion. Based on the questionnaire of 290 new generation employees’ data from China, after common method biases and reliability and validity tests, we used SPSS, Mplus and bootstrapping for empirical analysis. The result showed that the inclusive talent development model includes the diversified talent team construction, rational tolerance of employee’s opinions and failures, emphasis on employee’s training, emphasis on fairness and win–win and emphasis on employee’s advantages. The work passion has been divided into harmonious passion and obsessive passion. Among them, rational tolerance of employee’s opinions and failures, emphasis on employee’s training and emphasis on fairness and win–win have a significant positive impact on harmonious passion. Emphasis on fairness and win–win and emphasis on employee’s advantages have negative correlation with obsessive passion. The employee’s harmonious passion is significantly negatively correlated with the turnover intention and the obsessive passion is significantly positively correlated with the turnover intention. In addition, the harmonious passion plays a mediating role between rational tolerance of employee’s opinions and failures, emphasis on employee’s training, emphasis on fairness and win–win and employee’s turnover intention, while the obsessive passion plays a mediating role between emphasis on fairness and win–win and emphasis on employee’s advantages and employee’s turnover intention.

BACKGROUND: With the acceleration of the pace of life and the fierce competition for talents, role Conflicts and pressures caused by work and family will not only affect employees’ performance, but also reduce their job satisfaction and subjective well-being. So, as an important field for individuals, workplace factor also has an important impact on individual subjective well-being. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we explored the relationship between feedback seeking and subjective well-being and the role of career adaptability and P-E fit in this process. METHODS: In this study, we used a moderated mediation approach to test how employee’s workplace feedback seeking affect their subjective well-being and used a quantitative survey to measure these variables. RESULTS: The results showed that both feedback monitoring and feedback inquiry ultimately improve subjective well-being through positive prediction of career adaptability. In addition, we found the moderation effect of P-E fit, when P-E fit is low, the relationship between feedback seeking and career adaptability becomes stronger. CONCLUSIONS: As the results, feedback seeking has a positive impact on employees’ subjective well-being by increasing their career adaptability. In workplace, employees can actively seek for two kinds of feedback to improve their career adaptability and thus improve their well-being.

Purpose Previous research draws on the dualistic model of passion (harmonious and obsessive passion) overlooks how the different two types of passion interact within individuals using a variable-centered approach. The purpose of this paper is to identify work passion profiles and their antecedent and consequences adopting a person-centered approach, and to explain inconsistences in previous studies. Design/methodology/approach This paper conducts three studies (n=2,749 in total) using a latent profile analysis. Study 1 identifies three work passion profiles, namely, dual passion, pro harmonious passion and pro obsessive passion; study 2 examines dialectical thinking as an antecedent to work passion profile membership; study 3 examines how each profile relates to work performance and well-being. Findings This paper finds that the participants with a dual passion profile showed higher task performance and subjective well-being than the participants with the other two profiles; the participants with a pro obsessive passion profile were higher in task performance, interpersonal performance and psychological well-being than the participants with a pro harmonious profile. Originality/value This paper is the first that uses a latent profile analysis approach to examining work passion configurations. It provides a unique perspective to investigate how different types of passion configure and interact within individuals; it explores an antecedent (i.e. dialectical thinking) and outcomes (i.e. performance and well-being) of the three work passion profiles.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between high school students’ social support, career adaptability and subjective well-being that are perceived from their family, teachers and friends. The study group consisted of 325 students (193 girls, 132 males) in three secondary schools located in Cukurova and Yuregir districts of Adana city. The data were collected through Career Adaptability Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and Perceived Social Support Scale and Personal Information Form developed by the researchers to reach the demographic information of the participants. A path analysis was conducted within the framework of structural equation modeling to investigate the relationship between social support, career adaptability and subjective well-being that the students perceived. Data analysis was done through SPSS and AMOS package programs. Correlation coefficients of arithmetic mean, standard deviation, pearson moment analysis were calculated, and path analysis was performed based on the observed variables. The research findings show that there is a significant relationship between subjective well-being, career adaptability and perceived social support. The perceived social support from family, teachers and friends are variables that predict the career adaptability of high school students. Career adaptability has also been found to be a significant predictor of subjective well-being.

China is the only country with more than 200 million people aged 60 years and above. The Chinese government considers seniors’ universities to be an important form of leisure in which older people spend their free time. To explore the benefits of this education-oriented form of serious leisure, this study investigates the concept of successful aging and tests the effect of serious leisure involvement in seniors’ universities on the subjective well-being and successful aging of “young-old” participants in the context of China. In addition, this study examines the influence of family structure on the relationship between the above variables based on third-place theory. Although limitations to the approach are identified and discussed, the survey results show that the involvement of the aging population in education-oriented serious leisure activities is significantly associated with successful aging and that subjective well-being partially mediates the relationship between serious leisure involvement and successful aging. Furthermore, the relationship between serious leisure involvement and successful aging differs significantly among groups with different family structures.
