Repeatability and heritability of fertility in hill sheep

SUMMARYLambing records of 3,500 Scottish Blackface ewes and 2,000 Welsh Mountain ewes were used for a study of repeatability of ewe fertility and litter size. The repeatability of litter size at birth (calculated as an intra-ewe correlation) was higher in both flocks (0.19 and 0.24 for Blackface and Welsh ewes respectively) than that for barrenness (0.09 and 0.08) or for number of lambs born per mating (0.07 and 0.10). Repeatability of the corresponding traits at weaning were generally about half these values.About two-thirds of the ewes had sires recorded and were used for a heritability analysis. The heritability of litter size at birth in both flocks was higher (0.14 and 0.16 for Blackface and Welsh respectively) than either the heritability of barrenness (−0.03 and 0.03) or of numbers of lambs born per mating (−0.01 and 0.07).It was concluded that the greatest improvement in numbers of lambs weaned would be obtained by selection on litter size at birth. There would be correlated changes in live-weight (genetic correlations of 0.44 and 0.78 for Blackface and Welsh respectively) but not in fleece weight (genetic correlations of 0.09 and −0.13).

SUMMARYIn an analysis of data from 211 litters in a Pietrain herd, litter size at birth and at weaning was lower than is generally found in indigenous breeds. Mortality in growing and breeding pigs was high with circulatory failure accounting for 23% and 95% of deaths respectively. Pietrains, fed ad libitum over the live-weight range 27 to 87 kg, grew more slowly by 130 g/day than contemporary Large Whites on the same feeding regime, had higher killing-out percentages (by 3 to 4 units) and larger eye muscles in cross-section (by 9·9 cm2) but tended to have higher feed conversion ratios. There was no breed difference in backfat measurements but Pietrain carcasses were shorter by 83 mm and their muscle quality was markedly inferior to that of the Large Whites.

The objective of this study was to obtain heritability estimates for reproductive (litter size at birth, number born alive, litter size at weaning) and growth traits (individual weaning weight, individual weight at the end of the fattening period), then determine the genetic correlation between them in a synthetic rabbit line. A total of 805 females, 3242 parities, and 18 472 growth records were measured from 2006 to 2017. A pentavariate animal model was used with reproductive and growth traits. Heritability ranged from 0.025 to 0.126 for reproductive traits and from 0.033 to 0.059 for growth traits. These traits showed a large coefficient of variation (from 32% to 56% for reproductive traits and from 21% to 28% for growth traits). The repeatability of reproductive traits was low and the common litter effect for growth traits was the most important component of total variance. The genetic and phenotypic correlations between reproductive and growth traits were high and negative, especially with weight at weaning (−0.848, −0.922, and −0.854 for litter size at birth, number born alive, and litter size at weaning, respectively). In conclusion, because of the high negative correlation between reproductive and growth traits, both reproductive and growth traits should be selected in independent lines and the response to selection should be due mainly to the high coefficient of variation of the traits.

The effect on sow reproductive performance of including 100 g white-flowered peas (Pisum sativum hortense, cv. Vreta and Lotta) per kg, replacing barley, wheat and soya-bean meal in gestation and lactation diets, was studied over four parities using 24 pairs of crossbred littermate sows. Net sow weight gains and changes in backfat thickness over the complete reproductive cycle were similar for both treatments. Piglet live-weight gains and mean litter size at birth were not influenced by treatment, although litter size at weaning was 0·5 pigs higher (P > 0·05) for the control sows, due to higher post-natal mortality rate in the litters from the sows given the pea diets. It can be concluded that inclusion of white-flowered peas at a rate of 100 g/kg had no adverse effect on reproductive performance, with the exception of slightly higher post-natal piglet mortality.

Donald (1962) has recently pointed out the paucity of available data on production from British sheep, though some information is available for hill sheep (see for example Donald, 1958; Purser and Roberts, 1959; Purser and Young, 1959; Dalton, 1962). Most of these refer mainly to the Scottish Blackface and Welsh Mountain breeds. Hill sheep form approximately 40% of the national flock of over 11 million breeding ewes. Another 40% of ewes are found in crossbred flocks mainly kept on the lowlands; these produce fat lambs and hoggets with wool as a secondary product. Very little information has so far been published on these crossbred ewes, exceptions being work reported by Bywater (1945) and Rennie (1957). This is the first of three papers to be presented with the object of providing such information, and is based mainly on the work of Yalçin (1963). It is hoped that these papers will be of use on two counts:1. To provide a documentation of one specific cross, the Border Leicester × Cheviot ewe and her Suffolk-cross lambs under North of England grassland conditions.2. To analyse the usefulness of keeping production records within such flocks as aids to good commercial management, to culling and to selective breeding.In this paper the traits studied are body weight, fleece weight and litter size of the ewes, and the weights of the lambs between birth and slaughter or weaning. Estimates were obtained for the effects upon some of these traits of age and live-weight of ewe, and of sex, year and type of birth and rearing of the lambs. The usefulness of such correction factors is considered within recording schemes. In subsequent papers the effects on production of differences between crossbred ewes and between the rams used as fat lamb sires will be considered.

AbstractGenetic parameters were estimated for wool quality, fleece characteristics and lamb production traits for Scottish Blackface sheep reared under extensive hill conditions in the UK. In two separate studies, heritabilities and genetic correlations were estimated for wool quality traits measured on lambs at 5 months of age and again on the shorn fleece a year later. The wool traits included birth coat length (BCT), 10-point scores for proportion of grey and kemp fibres present in the fleece (grey, kemp), British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) recommendation (REC), greasy fleece weight (FLWT), BWMB fleece grade (FLGR), and average staple length (ASL). Genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated between lamb wool traits and lamb live weights at birth (BWT), marking (at mid lactation with an average age of 7 weeks) (MWT), weaning (at an average age of 17 weeks) (WWT) and slaughter (SLWT), average fat depth (AVFD) and average muscle depth (MD). Individual lamb carcass measurements included Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) conformation score (CONF) and fat class (FATC). Heritability estimates measured on 2524 or more live lambs were 0·69, 0·52, 0·26, 0·42 and 0·31 for BCT, ASL, grey, kemp and REC respectively. Heritability estimates for traits measured on the shorn fleece a year later for 1415 ewes were 0·37, 0·02, 0·57, 0·43, 0·46 and 0·14 for ASL, grey, kemp, REC, FLWT and FLGR respectively. Genetic correlations between FLWT in hoggets and other wool were positive and moderate to high in magnitude, ranging from 0·22 for kemp in lambs to 0·48 for grey in hoggets. Genetic correlations between REC and live-weight traits were 0·39 for MWT, 0·37 for WWT and 0·44 for SLWT. Genetic correlation between ASL and ultrasonic fat depth was 0·15 and for ASL and ultrasonic muscle depth was -0·30. The results indicate that the simple scoring systems derived to assess these traits are useful indicators of fleece quality, are highly repeatable over time and are a good gauge of likely future wool production. The results indicate that selection for heavier, leaner lambs should not compromise fleece quality, as assessed in this study.

AbstractMore accurate definition of Angora rabbit breeding objectives has been investigated by considering multiple expression of different traits. Data on 9672 fleece harvests produced by 1343 Angora does which had at least one wool harvest were analysed in order to study genetic variability according to age. The animals of the French breed were defleeced and weighed at 8 and 21 weeks of age for the first and second time respectively. Thereafter, does were defleeced every 14 weeks and weighed 9 weeks before defleecing. Total fleece weight and live body weight were recorded at each harvest.Direct heritability estimates of total fleece weight were similar accross ages and ranged from 0·31 to 0·42 . A significant maternal heritability was also observed at all ages of harvest. Maternal genetic estimates decreased with age from 0·44 at the first harvest to 0·10 for an adult harvest. Except for 8 weeks of age, genetic correlations between total fleece weight and live weight were generally not significantly different from zero. Genetic correlations of total fleece weight between the first and subsequent harvests were low (from 0·22 to 0·39) but genetic correlation estimates between consecutive harvests after the first were high, and ranged from 0·68 to 0·89 . The results suggest that the second harvest would be the first good predictor of breeding value for total fleece weight in the adult Angora rabbit.

ABSTRACTReproductive performance, body growth, wool production and ewe survival were examined in Scottish Blackface sheep. The data set was from a large randomly selected population maintained under hill conditions between 1954 and 1974. Paternal half-sib analyses of variance were used to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations, while maternal half-sib analyses of variance indicated the relative importance of maternal effects (both genetic and environmental).Among reproductive components, the heritability of fertility (ewes lambing per ewe mated) and lamb survival (lambs weaned per lamb born) were about zero. Litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) had an estimated heritability of 0·12 (s.e. 0·04) and a repeatability of 0·22 (s.e. 0·02), indicating some scope for improvement. Additionally, the strong genetic correlation between adult body weight and litter size (0·66, s.e. 0·18) suggested greater response from a combination of indirect selection (on body weight) and direct selection (on dam's litter size). Prior to weaning, direct genetic effects on body weight were very small (heritability less than 0·1) with a large influence of maternal environment. After weaning, these maternal influences gradually diminished and the heritability of weight increased. Genetic correlations between body weights showed a similar increasing trend with age. Genetic improvement of early growth rate would be more effective by selecting on a post-weaning rather than a pre-weaning body weight. Fleece weight had a high heritability (about 0·5) but was genetically uncorrelated with other measures of performance. Ewe survival had a small genetic component although estimates of heritability were very imprecise.

Objective: Evaluate the growth performance and carcass characteristics as well as the individual and maternal heterosis effects of New Zealand White (NZB), California (CA) rabbits and their crosses.Design/methodology/approach: 450 offspring rabbits, from 48 females mated to 6 stud rabbits, were evaluated, recording the weight (PNC) and litter size at birth (TCN) and at weaning (TCD), as well as, and weight (PMS), weight gain (GMD), consumption (CMS), and feed conversion (CONV) for during 8 weeks post-weaning. The carcass live weight at slaughter, warm carcass weight with head, carcass yield, and carcass parts of the carcass were evaluated.Results: Showed differences (p <0.05) in TCN and TCD with values of 10.47 and 9.03 kits, respectively. When NZB was used as the paternal breed, obtaining an individual heterosis of 5.91% for litter size and 12.44% for weaning weight. In the productive performance and carcass characteristics, the superiority of the California breed as a paternal breed was evidenced, with average values of 36.05 g in GMD and 2.95 kg in CONV. The averageindividual weight at the end of the fattening, at 70 days of age, was 2.09 kg and the weight of the carcass 1.16 kg. Post-weaning heterosis for the characteristics evaluated during fattening was were positive and moderate.Limitations on study/implications: It is necessary to carry out genetic improvement studies, with different crossing systems and to evaluate results based on the productive and reproductive behavior.Findings/conclusions: in reproductive characteristics, when using NZB as apaternal breed, the offspring are superior to those obtained from CA; while inthe productive variables, the offspring from CA show superior results.

Performance of sheep from a large Corriedale stud flock was assessed. Weaning and yearling liveweights, greasy and clean fleece weights, clean fleece yield and average fibre diameter records on approximately 3000 animals representing 64 sires were analysed. Also scrotal circumference of 1009 rams representing 27 sires were analysed. Some 3740 reproduction records over 11 years, for 980 ewes representing 114 sires, were also analysed. Heritability estimates were 0 34 �0.07 for weaning liveweight, 0.132 � 0.04 for yearling liveweight, 0.32 � 0.07 for greasy and 0.29 � 0.07 for clean fleece weights, 0.534 � 0 10 for clean fleece yield, 0-56 � 0 10 for yearling and 0 62 � 0 - 14 for hogget fibre diameters and 0.l5 � 0.11 for scrotal circumference. The genetic correlations between liveweight and fleece weight ranged from 0.13 to 0.34, and those for liveweight and fibre diameter were close to zero. The genetic correlations of scrotal circumference with liveweight and wool traits were positive and moderate. Reproductive performance in the flock was high, with fertility 92% and litter size 1.62, resulting in 148% lambs born and 130% lambs tagged alive of ewes joined. Estimated heritabilities for reproduction traits were 0-03 � 0.02 for lambs born and for lambs tagged, and the component traits, fertility 0 01 � 0 -02, litter size 0.04 � 0.03 and neonatal lamb survival was zero. Lambing date had a heritability of 0.06 � 0.03. Estimates of repeatability ranged from 0-04 � 0-01 for fertility to 0.07% 0.02 for lambs tagged and lambing date. Predicted heritabilities for the average of 3.8 records per ewe generally agreed with those estimated for average ewe lifetime performance, which ranged from 0.02 � 0.08 for fertility to 0.12 � 0.09 for lambs tagged and 0.l3 � 0.09 for lambing date.

Analyses of two separate Border Leicester data sets are reported. In the first set, genetic parameters were estimated for 14 month liveweight and greasy fleece weight from 1312 ewe and ram records representing 75 sires of the Border Leicester and Glen Vale breeds (a related genotype) using derivative-free REML procedures. The heritability estimate for liveweight was 0.24 � 0.07 and greasy fleece weight was 0.17 � 0-05, with the genetic correlation being -0 21 � 0 -30 and phenotypic correlation 0.54 � 0.02. In the second data set, reproductive performance was analysed and genetic parameters were estimated from 7395 joining records for 1604 ewes, representing 165 sires, from two Border Leicester stud flocks. Reproduction traits analysed were fertility (ewes lambing of ewes joined), litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) and lambs born (per ewe joined). The studs differed in performance for all reproductive traits; fertility (67 v. 82%), litter size (1-27 v. 1-43) and lambs born (85 v. 117%). The estimates of heritability and repeatability respectively for ewe performance were: fertility 0.01 � 0.01 and 0.05 � 0 01, litter size 0.01 � 0.02 and 0.05 � 0.01, lambs born 0.00 � 0.01 and 0.06 � 0.01. Estimates of heritability for average ewe lifetime performance were 0.04% 0.05 for fertility, 0-02 �0.05 for litter size and 0.03 � 0.05 for lambs born, based on averages of 4.6 joining and 3.5 litter size records for ewes. The genetic correlations between lambs born and its components fertility (0.96 � 0.18) and litter size (0.83 � 0.44) were high, with the genetic correlation between fertility and litter size being 0.65 � 0.52. Implications for breeding programs for Border Leicester flocks within LAMBPLAN are discussed.
