Iron deficiency is common, especially among young women. Adding probiotics to foods could be one way to increase iron absorption. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that non-haem iron absorption from a fruit drink is improved by addingLactobacillus plantarum299v (Lp299v). Iron absorption was studied in healthy women of reproductive age using a single-blind cross-over design in two trials applying the double-isotope (55Fe and59Fe) technique. In Trial 1, iron absorption from a fruit drink containing 109colony-forming units (CFU) Lp299v was compared with that from a control drink without Lp299v. Trial 2 had the same design but 1010CFU were used. The test and control drinks contained approximately 5 mg of iron as ferrous lactate and were labelled with59Fe (B) and55Fe (A), respectively, and consumed on 4 consecutive days in the order AABB. Retention of the isotopes was measured with whole-body counting and in blood. Mean iron absorption from the drink containing 109CFU Lp299v (28·6(sd12·5) %) was significantly higher than from the control drink (18·5(sd5·8) %),n10,P<0·028). The fruit drink with 1010CFU Lp299v gave a mean iron absorption of 29·1(sd17·0) %, whereas the control drink gave an absorption of (20·1(sd6·4) %) (n11,P<0·080). The difference in iron absorption between the 109CFU Lp299v and the 1010CFU Lp299v drinks was not significant (P=0·941). In conclusion, intake of probiotics can increase iron absorption by approximately 50 % from a fruit drink having an already relatively high iron bioavailability.

Abstract The 4-hour whole body count is found to be clinically valid as a "100 per cent value" in iron absorption studies performed with a whole body counter. Measurement of iron absorption can be made 2 weeks after ingestion of radioiron, but not prior to this period.

ABSTRACT Background Sweetpotato and potato are fast-maturing staple crops and widely consumed in low- and middle-income countries. Conventional breeding to biofortify these crops with iron could improve iron intakes. To our knowledge, iron absorption from sweetpotato and potato has not been assessed. Objective The aim was to assess iron absorption from regular and iron-biofortified orange-fleshed sweetpotato in Malawi and yellow-fleshed potato and iron-biofortified purple-fleshed potato in Peru. Methods We conducted 2 randomized, multiple-meal studies in generally healthy, iron-depleted women of reproductive age. Malawian women (n = 24) received 400 g regular or biofortified sweetpotato test meals and Peruvian women (n = 35) received 500 g regular or biofortified potato test meals. Women consumed the meals at breakfast for 2 wk and were then crossed over to the other variety. We labeled the test meals with 57Fe or 58Fe and measured cumulative erythrocyte incorporation of the labels 14 d after completion of each test-meal sequence to calculate iron absorption. Iron absorption was compared by paired-sample t tests. Results The regular and biofortified orange-fleshed sweetpotato test meals contained 0.55 and 0.97 mg Fe/100 g. Geometric mean (95% CI) fractional iron absorption (FIA) was 5.82% (3.79%, 8.95%) and 6.02% (4.51%, 8.05%), respectively (P = 0.81), resulting in 1.9-fold higher total iron absorption (TIA) from biofortified sweetpotato (P &lt; 0.001). The regular and biofortified potato test meals contained 0.33 and 0.69 mg Fe/100 g. FIA was 28.4% (23.5%, 34.2%) from the regular yellow-fleshed and 13.3% (10.6%, 16.6%) from the biofortified purple-fleshed potato meals, respectively (P &lt; 0.001), resulting in no significant difference in TIA (P = 0.88). Conclusions FIA from regular yellow-fleshed potato was remarkably high, at 28%. Iron absorbed from both potato test meals covered 33% of the daily absorbed iron requirement for women of reproductive age, while the biofortified orange-fleshed sweetpotato test meal covered 18% of this requirement. High polyphenol concentrations were likely the major inhibitors of iron absorption. These trials were registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03840031 (Malawi) and NCT04216030 (Peru).

Abstract Objectives To examine the burden of metabolic outcomes and associations of vitamin B12 status with metabolic health in women of reproductive age (WRA), as part of a population-based biomarker survey in Chittoor, India. Methods Participants (980 WRA; 15–40y nonpregnant or lactating) were assessed for glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; nephelometry) and serum vitamin B12 concentrations (chemiluminescence). Anthropometric measurements and systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures were collected in triplicate. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to evaluate whole body (WF%) and trunk (TF%) fat among women ≤ 18y. We defined elevated HbA1c as ≤ 6.5% and ≤ 5.7-&lt; 6.5%, and hypertension as stage 1 (SBP 130–139 or DBP 80–89 mmHg) and stage 2 (SBP ≤ 140 or DBP ≤ 90 mmHg). Vitamin B12 was natural logarithmically transformed prior to analyses; vitamin B12 deficiency was defined as &lt; 148 pmol/L. Linear and binomial regression models were used to examine associations of vitamin B12 status with metabolic outcomes. Results A total of 23.3% of adult WRA were overweight (body mass index (BMI): 25.0 to &lt; 30.0 kg/m2) and 9.7% had obesity (≤30.0 kg/m2). Waist circumference (WC; ≤88.9 cm) and waist-hip ratio (WHR; ≤0.85) were elevated in 13.4% and 20.1% of adult WRA. One-fourth of WRA had elevated HbA1c (≤6.5%: 5.0%; ≤5.7-&lt; 6.5%: 20.0%), and 18.6% had hypertension (stage 1: 16.4%; stage 2: 2.2%); 48.3% of WRA were vitamin B12 deficient. Higher continuous vitamin B12 concentrations were associated with lower BMI (β [standard error (SE)] -0.65 [0.28]) and WF% (-1.01 [0.50]); lower risk of elevated WC (risk ratio (RR) [95% confidence interval] 0.64 [0.49–0.85]); and higher risk of HbA1c ≤ 5.7% (1.19 [1.00–1.41]). Vitamin B12 deficiency was associated with higher BMI (β [SE] 0.98 [0.34], p = 0.004), WC (1.96 [0.76]), WF% (1.75 [0.59]), and TF% (2.03 [0.73]); and higher risk of having overweight (RR: 1.31 [1.09–1.58]), elevated WC (1.85 [1.32–2.60]), and WHR (1.38 [1.07–1.78]). Conclusions The burden of adverse metabolic outcomes was substantial in this population, and vitamin B12 deficiency was associated with central adiposity and overweight. Evaluating the role of vitamin B12 in the development of metabolic outcomes in future studies could inform screening and interventions to improve vitamin B12 status and metabolic health in WRA. SummaryA preliminary study of iron absorption by whole body counting was carried on a group of 16 women. The cases included 8 patients suffering from iron deficiency anaemia and various infections as well as 8 healthy controls. High iron absorption is associated with iron dificiency, these changes being more marked in iron deficient controls than in those with infection or malignancy. In iron deficient controls results of whole body counting correlate very well with other haematological investigations.

Body fat content of seven lean women (body mass index (BMI) 20.6 (sd1.8) kg/m2) and seven overweight women (BMI 31.1 (sd 3.3) kg/m2) was estimated by six different methods: underwater weighing (UWW), body-water dilution (BWD), whole-body counting (40K), skinfold thickness (SFT), bio-electrical impedance (BEI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Using UWW as the reference method, the differences between percentage fat by each other method and the percentage fat by UWW were calculated for each subject. The mean difference was lowest for SFT and highest for BWD. MRI showed the lowest variability in individual results, and 40K the highest. 40K and BWD methods used in combination gave better agreement with UWW results than either 40K or BWD methods alone. There was a weak negative correlation between the difference from the UWW results and percentage fat in the SFT measurements, but not in the BWD, 40K, BEI or MRI measurements, suggesting that for these methods the assumptions involved produced no greater inaccuracy in the overweight women than in the lean women. In all subjects the BEI offered little improvement over the traditional SFT measurements. The agreement between MRI and UWW estimates in both lean and overweight women suggests that MRI may be a satisfactory substitute for the more established methods of body fat estimation in adult women.

Active women or women of reproductive age (15–49 years old) have a high risk of suffering from anaemia. Anaemia is not solely caused by iron deficiency, however, the approaches to improve iron status in both cases are greatly related. Improving the iron status of active women can be done by dietary intervention with functional food. This review aims to provide insights about the functional food role to increase iron absorption in active women and the potency of pulse probiotic superfood development in dry matrices. Results showed that the beneficial effect of iron status is significantly improved by the synergic work between probiotic and prebiotic. Furthermore, chickpeas and lentils are good sources of prebiotic and the consumption of pulses are related with 21st century people’s intention to eat healthy food. There are wide possibilities to develop functional food products incorporated with probiotics to improve iron status in active woman.

SummaryA whole-body scanner is described with a mobile shadow shield which affords a considerable reduction in space. The scanner has two Nal(Tl) scintillation crystals of 4 x 6", placed at opposite sites of the subject. Background radiation, efficiency and geometric qualities made the scanner very useful for clinical whole-body counting. The equipment was used in iron absorption studies using a double isotope technique with 59Fe and 51Cr. After ingestion of an oral test dose total body kinetics of 59Fe and 51Cr was followed up to 60 days in 4 volunteers. Between days 3 and 10 the 51Cr, which was used as an non-absorbable indicator, had left the body completely. The 59Fe reached a constant value not before day 10, indicating that iron retention cannot be measured before that time. From repeated measurement of 59Fe and 5lCr directly after ingestion until the first defaecation it could be deduced that the coefficient of variation for 59Fe was less than 1.5% with a scanning time of 600 sec, and for 51Cr less than 5%. Extreme variations in geometry, such as measurement of the activity in a beaker and of the same amount after ingestion in the body, yielded practically the same value for 59Fe. The double isotope technique made it possible to measure not only iron retention but also mucosal uptake and mucosal transfer of iron. It is pointed out that measurement of the last two parameters of iron absorption is not possible in patients with serious obstipation or with very low mucosal uptake values.
