Using Suffolk sheep for improving lamb production from subtropical Egyptian sheep

SUMMARYThe performance of Suffolk cross-bred ewe lambs produced either by Suffolk crossbred ewes, 70–90% Suffolk (HS), or by Ossimi ewes, 35–45% Suffolk (LS), was investigated. Forty-three ewe lambs from both groups were available, and were given two different levels of feeding.The LS ewe lambs showed, insignificantly, better growth performance than the HS group, and breed group differences increased with age. They also reached puberty earlier (305·4 v. 334·6 days for the HS ewe lambs). Using the HS breeding rams rather than the imported Suffolk ones, for improving lamb production from the local sheep flocks, is recommended.The LS ewe lambs started their first breeding season 18 days earlier, and ended 34 days later, than the HS ewe lambs. Both cross-bred groups showed clear anoestrous periods of 225·4 and 202·2 days, respectively. The onset of their second breeding season was similar, on average 29 August. These figures are close to those of the purebred Suffolk ewes, and far away from the nonseasonal local parents.

The attainment of puberty in September-born early-maturing ewe lambs was studied at Zaragoza (latitude 41° 40' N). Thirty twin Salz females were allocated to two groups receiving two nutrition levels after 3 months of age: high (500 g/day lucerne hay and 500 g/day concentrate) (H) and low (500 g/ day lucerne hay) (L). Oestrus was detected daily by aproned rams. Corpora lutea were counted after oestrus and plasma progesterone levels monitored each week.In the first breeding season (January to February) the percentage of females showing sexual activity (silent emulation or oestrus and ovulation) was higher in the H compared with the L group (67 and 20%; P < 0/05). Nonpubertal oestrus before the main breeding season was detected in 67% of animals. In the main breeding season and for H and L groups respectively, percentage of females showing silent ovulation before puberty was 67 and 33% and mean age at puberty extended to 319 (s.e. 4-8) and 314 (s.e. 3·7) days. Ovulation rate at puberty was 1·73 (s.e. 0·13) and 1·33 (s.e. 0·15) respectively (P < 0·05).

AbstractAn investigation was conducted to determine the effect of mating at puberty or third oestrus or after pre-mating oestrogen and progestagen therapy, designed to mimic the changes that occur in plasma oestrogen and progesterone concentrations during the 1st, 2nd or 3rd oestrous cycles, on fertility in ewe lambs. Twenty-five ewe lambs were mated at puberty on mean date of 18 October and 21 were mated at third oestrus on 3 December. Of these, 28% and 81% of animals mated at puberty and third oestrus lambed, respectively (P < 0·05). A similar number of ewe lambs were mated within 24 h of ram introduction in the groups given one, two or three consecutive applications oestrogen and progestagen (25 μg oestradiol benzoate followed 48 h later by a progestagen pessary left in situ for days). Of the 43 corpora lutea, 21 were represented by viable embryos in the 37 animals holding to service after one application compared with 34 out of 46 corpora lutea in 40 animals given three applications (P < 0·05). Furthermore, embryo crown-rump length, embryo weight and amniotic sac width was greater (P < 0·05), on day of pregnancy, in animals given one compared with three applications of oestrogen and progestagen. These results demonstrate that fertility is improved in ewe lambs mated on third oestrus or after progestagen and oestrogen therapy designed to simulate three oestrous cycles.

1. Over 3 years, different levels of first winter nutrition created the following live-weight differences between groups of North and South Country Cheviot ewe hoggs at 12 months of age. High plane (H.P.) and mid-plane (M.P.) fed groups born 1956 were 34–35% and 11–13% heavier, respectively, than low plane (L.P.) fed groups, H.P. and M.P. fed groups born 1957 were 47–57% and 18–24% heavier, respectively, than hill-wintered groups. Away wintered groups born 1958 were 9–12% heavier than hill-wintered groups. All group differences were highly significant.2. From 12 months onwards all groups were run together on the same hill and received similar management. Live weight and live measurement response of the total treatment groups and of the heavy and light hoggs within the groups prior to treatment were studied over the summer after treatment from 12 to 18 months.

Present study was conducted to evaluate the different levels of energy to protein ratios (EPR) using food waste and black soldier fly larvae meal (FWBSFL) on growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers. A total of 160 one-day old broiler chicks were divided randomly to four groups and each group had 8 replicates with 5 chicks per replicate. The control diet was formulated using conventional feed ingredients with EPR of 154 for the starter period and 167 for the finisher period. The other treatments were diets with normal, low, and high EPR (154,143, and 166 for the starter period; 167, 155, and 177 for the finisher period) using FWBSFL. Feed consumption and body weight gain as well as digestibility of crude protein, crude fiber, and fat were decreased due to feeding of FWBSFL diets. Different levels of EPR using FWBSFL decreased growth performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers.

<p align="center"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p align="center"> </p><p>This study aimed to analyze the effect of water temperature on the physiological condition and growth performance of freshwater eel elver<em> Anguilla bicolor bicolor </em>(McClelland, 1844). This study was conducted in March 2017 at the Physiology Laboratory of Aquatic Animal, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Bogor Agricultural University. The study used a completely randomized design with five different levels of temperature (22<sup>°</sup>C, 24<sup>°</sup>C, 26<sup>°</sup>C, 28<sup>°</sup>C, and 30<sup>°</sup>C) as treatments with two replications. The size of elver was 2‒3 g. Fish were fed with 1 mm pellet containing 45% of protein. The feeding level was 7 % of fish biomass and the feeding frequency was two times a day. The results showed that temperatures range from 24‒30<sup>°</sup>C could be used for freshwater eel elver rearing and 28‒30<sup>°</sup>Cwere the best temperatures to support survival and growth performance of eel elver. A temperature of 24<sup>°</sup>C was the best temperature that could reduce the metabolism rate and did not cause stress on the elver.</p><p> </p><p>Keywords: elver, physiological conditions, growth performance, metabolism, temperature</p><p> </p><p> </p><p align="center"><strong>ABSTRAK</strong></p><p align="center"><strong> </strong></p><p>Penelitian dengan tujuan menganalisis pengaruh suhu terhadap kondisi fisiologis dan kinerja pertumbuhan <em>elver</em> ikan sidat (<em>Anguilla bicolor bicolor</em> McClelland, 1844) telah dilakukan pada bulan Maret 2017 di Laboratorium Fisiologi Hewan Air FPIK IPB. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan lima perlakuan suhu berbeda (22<sup>°</sup>C, 24<sup>°</sup>C, 26<sup>°</sup>C, 28<sup>°</sup>C, dan 30<sup>°</sup>C) dengan masing-masing dua ulangan. Ukuran benih yang digunakan 2‒3 g. Pakan yang diberikan berupa pellet berukuran 1 mm dengan kadar protein 45%. Jumlah pakan yang diberikan (FR) adalah 7% dari biomassa ikan dan diberikan dua kali sehari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kisaran suhu 24‒30<sup>°</sup>C dapat digunakan dalam pemeliharaan <em>elver</em> ikan sidat, dan suhu 28‒30<sup>°</sup>C merupakan suhu yang sangat baik untuk mendukung kelangsungan hidup dan pertumbuhan <em>elver</em> ikan sidat. Suhu media 24<sup>°</sup>C adalah suhu terbaik yang dapat menekan laju metabolisme dengan tidak menyebabkan stres pada <em>elver </em>ikan sidat.</p><p> </p><p>Kata kunci: <em>elver</em>, kondisi fisiologis, kinerja pertumbuhan, metabolisme, suhu</p><p> </p><p> </p>
