SUMMARYA total of 745 samples of chicken giblets was cultured to determine the relative efficiency of a commercially available Rappaport-Vassiliadis medium (RV-Oxoid). Experiments to determine the optimum inoculation ratio showed that 1:100 was superior to the other ratios tested. Comparison of RV-Oxoid with standard RV and RV-medium prepared using soya peptone (RV-soya) showed that after 24 h RV-soya was significantly better than RV-Oxoid (P< 0·05), although there was no significant difference between standard RV and RV-Oxoid. Furthermore, when the duration of incubation was extended to 48 h there was no significant difference between the three media (P> 0·25).We conclude that RV-Oxoid is a satisfactory product for the isolation of salmoncllae from poultry, providing that it is inoculated at a ratio of 1:100 and is incubated for 48h. Its use can therefore be recommended to laboratories who wish to use a dehydrated medium.

ABSTRACT Objective To compare the level of satisfaction in the use of wraparound Hawley and thermoplastic maxillary retainers. Materials and Methods The study sample included 70 orthodontic patients (24 males and 46 females), who were in the retention stage (mean age = 20.80 years). All patients wore the two types of maxillary retainer for 1 month each, along with a 3×3 fixed mandibular retainer. After the use of each retainer, the patients responded to a questionnaire evaluating the level of satisfaction with their use of the maxillary retainer. Intergroup comparison was performed by independent t tests. Chi-square test was used to evaluate preference for the type of retainer by gender. Results The thermoplastic retainer was better for swallowing and the wraparound Hawley appliance was better for hygiene and durability. The other factors evaluated (adaptation, speech, comfort, esthetics, satisfaction, and fitting) did not show significant differences between the retainers. There was also no significant difference in preference for the appliances. Conclusions Regarding the overall satisfaction and the preference, there was no difference between the wraparound Hawley and thermoplastic retainers. The wraparound Hawley appliance was better in hygiene and resistance than the thermoplastic retainer; and the thermoplastic appliance was better than the wraparound Hawley for swallowing fluids and saliva.

This study was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement between students who were taught by using the Question Generation strategy and that of those who were not. In conducting the study, question generation strategy was used in the experimental group, but the control group did not get any treatment. Sixty students were assigned in two groups, with 30 students in the experimental group and the other 30 students in the control group. Reading comprehension tests was used in collecting the data. Data were analyzed using a t-test. The findings of the study showed that the question generation strategy could improve students’ reading achievement better than and those who were not. Therefore, the question generation strategy was helpful to aid students to understand the reading text

over a period of 1-3 hours. Dust samples were collected by drawing the air through a filter at the rate of 1.71/min. The filter pore size was 0.8 um. The dust contents of the air were higher when peat was used than when the other litters were used (5). Table I: Dust contents of air during use of different litters. Fixed measuring point. litter dust content of air standard no. of mg/m3 of air deviation measurements peat alone 1.24 0.65 11 peat and straw 0.53 0.29 6 straw alone 0.10 0.20 4 straw and sawdust 0.24 0.28 4 sawdust alone 0.13 0.23 3 all farms 0.67 0.66 28 Variance analysis showed the diffemces between the groups to be highly significant F(4,23) = 7.43, p< 0.001. According to the t-tests, there was a significant difference between peat alone and all the other litters, and also between straw and straw and peat combined. 6.2. NH3 CONTENT OF AIR --------------- 3 The differences found in the NH content of the ocwshed air during the use of the different litters were not as clear as in the case of dust contents. The contents measured were generally very lew. On farms using peat, the aimonia content of the at the tying-stall at milking height was 2.1 ppm, whereas on the other farms it averaged 3.2 ppm. The corresponding ammonia contents during manure removal were 3.5 ppm for peat and 4.0 ppm on the other farms (5). The aimonia content of the air was determined using a Drager detector tube, which is not very accurate, particularly at low concentrations. In theory the acidic nature of of peat suggests it should bind armonia far better than the other litters. Hcwever, the results obtained indicate that the use of peat freshens up the cowshed air only if the manure removal and urine separation systems are working efficiently. On the basis of a sensory evaluation, the air in cowsheds using peat was slightly fresher than that in the other ccwsheds. The same result was obtained in the farm interviews. This study revealed no obstacles to the use of peat as cowshed litter. The quality of the milk and the health of the animals are affected more by the general standards of hygiene than the type of

This study investigated the effects of audio and text density on the achievement, time-in-program, and attitudes of 134 university undergraduate students. Data concerning the participants' pre-existing computer skills and experience, as well as demographic information, were also collected. The instruction in visual design principles was delivered by a CBI program and included numerous illustrations. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three presentation versions of the instruction: Text Only, Full Text-Full Audio, or Lean Text-Full Audio. No significant difference in achievement was found between the three treatment groups, however there was a significant difference in learning efficiency, with the Text Only group requiring significantly less instructional time and achieving as well on the posttest as each of the other two groups. Significant differences in achievement were obtained for overall computer experience (participants with more computer experience performed better than those with less) and gender (females performed better than males). Overall, attitudes toward the instruction were favorable with participants in the Full Text-Full Audio treatment responding less favorably than their counterparts in the other two treatments. The findings have implications for the use of audio, text and graphics in the instructional design of computer-based instruction.

Background: Aim of present study was to compare the efficacy and safety of supraglottic devices (LMA supreme, LMA proseal and I-Gel) by clinical and fiberoptic evaluation in elective laparoscopic surgeries under general anaesthesia with controlled ventilation. Methods: The design was a prospective, randomized study enrolling total 105 patients of either sex, (age 18-65 years), ASA grade I/II and mallampati score I and II, were randomly allocated to LS (LMAS), LP (PLMA), and IG (I-Gel) groups according to the supraglottic device applied. The three devices were compared as regards insertion parameters, adequacy of ventilation (oxygen saturation, endtidal carbon dioxide and air leak), fibreoptic vision and intra or postoperative complications. Results: The overall ease of insertion of LMAS was found to be better than the other two devices. Adequacy of ventilation was comparable in all the study groups. Safety of these devices was found to be comparable but if OLP was considered as a marker of safety of the device, LMA proseal was a better option than the other two devices. There was no significant difference in the fiberoptic view of the laryngeal inlet between the three study groups but the number of patients with grade 4 view of laryngeal inlet fiberoptic was more in I gel than LMA proseal and LMA supreme. Conclusions: It was concluded that the LMAS, PLMA and I-Gel are effective ventilatory devices during controlled ventilation, without major complications. But in clinical practice it is advisable to monitor peak airway pressure, OLP and laparoscopic view of gastric distension whenever these devices are used in laparoscopic surgeries.

Abstract Background: Filiform-fire-needle(FFN)has been used in clinical treatment of upper extremity spastic paralysis after stroke(UESPAS). This study will evaluate the effect of filiform-fire-needle in the treatment of UESPAS under the background of standardized clinical research, and study the relationship between the efficacy and the course of treatment, so as to provide high-quality evidence-based basis for further clinical treatment and future research design. Methods: A prospective randomized controlled study was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy of FFN acupuncture therapy for patients with UESPAS. UESPAS patients were recruited in Changhai Hospital, Shanghai, China and they were randomly divided into FFN acupuncture group (F group), filiform needle acupuncture group (A group) or rehabilitation treatment group (R group). During the 20-day treatment, the same acupoints were taken in A group and F group. F group was treated once every 2 days for a total of 10 times, while A group and R group were treated 8 d in a row and then rest for for 2 days for a total of 16 times. In this study, the primary outcome indicators were modified Ashworth scale (MAS), secondary results including Fugl-Meyer assessment of Upper Extremity Motor Function (FMA-UE), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Barthel index (BI). The above scales were evaluated before treatment, 10 days and 20 days after treatment. The safety was evaluated by self-made acupuncture adverse reaction observation table. Results: A significant difference was observed in MAS, FMA-UE, BI, NIHSS in the three groups from pre- to post treatment. From the evaluation of the changes of MAS, the curative effect of F group was better than the other two groups after 10 days of treatment, and F group was better than the R group on the 20th day, but there was no significant difference among the three groups after follow-up. The the difference of FMA-UE score showed F group was higher than the other two groups after 20 days of treatment and follow-up. The change of BI score in group F was higher than that in group R after 10 days of treatment, and the change of BI score in group F was higher than that in the other two groups after 20 days of treatment and follow-up. No significant change in the score of NIHSS was found in three groups. Conclusions: FFN acupuncture therapy has an advantage in relieving upper limb spasm and improving the activities of daily life of stroke patients in the short term, and in the long term, FFN has advantages in improving the motor ability of spastic limbs and improving the ability of daily life of patients.

This study aims to verify the self-evaluation that people make about their ability to drive and investigate whether there is a difference between self-evaluation and evaluation about their friends’ abilities. To this end, 151 people answered three different questionnaires, one questionnaire about driving abilities (self-evaluation and evaluation of friends), the Driver’s Behavior Questionnaire and a socio-demographic questionnaire The sample consisted of 50.3% of males with a mean age of 25.32 years (sd = 1.66). As a result, self-evaluation was positively correlated with age, evaluation of friend, weekly driving hours, Common Violations, and Aggressive Violations. In addition, there was significant difference between evaluation by sex: males carry out self-assessments in a more positive way. It was also found that people evaluate themselves better than they evaluate their friends. From this research, it is possible to think the target audience that would most benefit from an intervention to reduce self-evaluation, that is, men, people over 24 years old, and people who have more driving experience.

The relative efficiency of whole blood compared with sedimented erythrocytes in exchange transfusion was studied in regard to the correction of anemia. Two groups of infants with hemolytic disease of the newborn due to maternal-fetal Rh incompatibility were transfused with one or the other type of blood. Determinations of concentration of hemoglobin; packed cell volume; plasma, erythrocyte, and total blood volumes; and total circulating hemoglobin mass were made and compared. It was concluded that the use of sedimented erythrocytes does not lead to a deficit of erythrocyte volume and circulating hemoglobin mass as does the use of whole blood. Analysis of data from 47 infants, 23 of whom received whole blood, and 24 of whom received sedimented erythrocytes, indicates that a significant difference in concentration of bilirubin occurs. The increase in concentration of bilirubin subsequent to exchange transfusion was lower and less rapid in most infants of the group receiving sedimented erythrocytes. For these reasons the use of sedimented rather than whole blood is suggested in exchange transfusion for hemolytic disease of the newborn.

The effects of social comparison feedback on specific self-efficacy and performance of high generalized self-efficacy participants and low generalized self-efficacy participants were examined with the help of 20 participants with high generalized self-efficacy and 20 participants with low generalized self-efficacy. Half of the participants in each generalized self-efficacy group received negative social comparison feedback after each of four trials of an experimental task while the other half received no feedback. Two kinds of specific self-efficacy—performance-based and normative-based—were measured once before the task and four times after the trials of the task. After the task, the High generalized self-efficacy/Feedback group rated performance-based specific self-efficacy higher and performed better than the Low generalized self-efficacy/Feedback group. No significant difference was observed between the High generalized self-efficacy/No feedback group and Low generalized self-efficacy/No feedback group. There were no significant effects with regard to normative-based specific self-efficacy.
