Philosophy is now in its 77th year. It likes to think of itself as still sprightly in approach and open-minded in content. Nevertheless it has a burden of history and of expectation, and it has an academic level to maintain. Even though it strives, as always and unlike some of its contemporaries, to be written for the most part in a language recognizable as English and to address topics of genuine human interest, its reputation defends on its being recognized as a leading journal of philosophy in the academic world. So it is a pleasure to welcome, in April 2002, a sister periodical, called simply Think. Like Philosophy, Think will be published under the auspices of the Royal Institute of Philosophy. It will do some of the educational things the Royal Institute of Philosophy was originally set up to do, but cannot be done in an academic journal such as Philosophy. Think will consist, for the most part, of short articles of genuine philosophy, but they will be articles accessible to any who are prepared simply to think. In particular, Think will aim to interest young people, including the increasing numbers who now take philosophy as part of the school curriculum, but who may have little or no knowledge of academic philosophy.Think is not a magazine. Its pages will not contain philosophical gossip or anecdote. These are not unworthy activities, even in a philosophical context, but there are other places for them. Even where imaginative in presentation, and even though they need not have the originality and depth expected in an academic journal, the articles in Think will be recognizably philosophical in tone and ambition. Think's articles will aim, simply, to make their readers think philosophically, in the best possible way, and to think about topics which are recognizably philosophical. Not that Think will eschew controversy. Its authors will, from time to time, defend controversial positions, and will provoke equally controversially replies. And if at times the opinions expressed in Think have a younger or more radical feel to them than those characteristically expressed in its older and more venerable relation, that is as it should be, and all a proper part of the role of the Royal Institute of Philosophy.

Research has demonstrated that teachers who know more about the literate lives of their students outside of the classroom are more able to set up positive connections between home and school. In this article, we theorise the notion of ‘deficit’ discourses in education. Using two cases as examples, we seek to disrupt deficit discourses about children in communities of high poverty. The first case describes children’s responses when asked to draw and talk about learning to write, and highlights children’s explication of the role of the family in literacy learning. The second case describes an outside school media space where children engaged over time with a variety of new media and digital texts. These examples make the point that listening to young people can provide surprising insights into children’s aspirations and their understandings of the affordances of learning literacy. Our findings challenge the assumptions that underpin deficit understandings of children and young people growing up in communities of high poverty, and suggest that listening to children and young people in schools may well support the goal of providing quality schooling for all students.

This study aimed at identifying the role of the Ministry of Youth in protecting Jordanian youth from extremist ideology from the perspective of the University of Jordan students. The researcher used, as a tool for the study, the descriptive survey- analytical approach, and the questionnaire, which consisted of (20) paragraphs distributed over 4 fields; The study sample consisted of (856) individuals from the University of Jordan students, (496) males and (360) females, and the results showed that the overall tool obtained a total average of (3.20) out of (5), meaning that the ministry’s role achieved a (medium) level at the level of fields; The social domain got the highest average (3.36), followed by the security domain with an average of (3.18), then the religious domain with an average of (3.14), and finally the intellectual domain with an average of (3.11), all with a rating of (medium), and the results did not show statistically significant differences at the level (α≤ 0.05) among the sample estimates for the role of the Ministry of Youth in protecting Jordanian youth from extremist ideology that is attributed to the gender variable in the intellectual and security field, while significant differences were found in the social and religious fields, in favor of male students. The results did not show differences according to the academic level variable in the social field, while they showed significant differences in the (religious, security, and intellectual) fields and in favor of doctoral students compared to other academic levels. In light of the results of the study, the researcher recommended the necessity of strengthening the role of the Ministry of Youth in protecting young people from extremist ideology and networking between the Ministry of Youth, the government and the private institutions and organizations to develop an integrated system to protect young people from extremist ideology, and building the capacities of workers to protect young people from extremist ideology. He also suggested preparing a similar study that includes all university students; at the level of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Conclusiones: Se sugiere a los profesionales de la orientación y psicopedagogía que trabajan con estos jóvenes identificar los puntos fuertes en los que cada cual destaque reforzándolos y resaltándolos, así como detectar los aspectos más deficitarios del autoconcepto para entrenarlos, en aras de favorecer el sentimiento de valía y competencia personal.ABSTRACTIntroduction: Attending to the relevance of self-concept in the educational field and in the personal, social and labor life, this study analyzed the difficulties intra-sexes of young people between 18 to 30 years old (14 men y 23 women) affected by a retinal degeneration, compared to others without affectation; enquire into the role of the academic level (primary/secondary, university). Method: Participants were 74 people (37 affected and 37 non-affected), matched in sex and educational level. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale and a sociodemographic questionnaire elaborated ad hoc were used. Results: The results obtained in the different non-parametric analysis carried out, between affected women and between affected men, showed that lower scores were detected in physical self-concept; verifying that women with higher studies were perceived better in this; while men obtained higher scores in personal self-concept. Conclusions: Data suggested to the guidance and psychopedagogy professionals who work with these young people to identify the strong points in which each one stands out, reinforcing and highlighting them, as well as detecting the most deficient aspects of the self-concept in order to train them, in order to promote the feeling of worth and personal competence.

Debates about nation and national positioning within the global exemplified in the Australian culture, history and literacy ‘wars’ have tended to be definitive and apparently oppositional in tone. Yet these debates have proceeded in the absence of a concretized notion of Australian identity and do not adequately address the complexities of political identification and allegiance. Despite intense concerns in these ‘wars’ about the views of young people and the role of their schooling, young people do not necessarily have less well-developed conceptions of Australia’s place in a globalizing world than their elders. Our research on young people’s responses to globalization, global cultural products and national identity offers some suggestive new directions for considering these issues and the school curriculum, directions which are built upon the actual ways in which young Australians express uncertainty about US—Australian relations, while simultaneously identifying with American cultural products.

We also explain how Vocational Guidance works as well as the training methods used in the guidance framework, with reference to the school curriculum, vocational choice and to the activities of academic transition and from here to the individuals working life with special reference to professional placement. This Vocational Guidance training focus comes from the need to join the worlds of Education and work which, in todays world, are basically rather uncoordinated.

Considering that radiology is still a male-dominated specialty in which men make up more than two thirds of the workforce, this systematic review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the current role of women in radiological imaging, focusing on the main aspects such as career progression, leadership, academic practice, and perceived discrimination. Three electronic databases were searched up to 21 October 2020. To identify additional records, weekly automatic email alerts were set up on PubMed until December 2020 and reference lists of key studies and included papers were screened. Two reviewers independently performed the search, study selection, quality appraisal, data extraction, and formal narrative synthesis. In case of disagreement, a third reviewer was involved. Across the 61 included articles, women worked more often part-time and held fewer positions of power in hospitals, on editorial boards, and at the academic level (associate and full professors). Women were less often in relevant positions in scientific articles, had fewer publications, and had a lower H-index. Discrimination and sexual harassment were experienced by up to 40% and 47% of female radiologists, respectively. Our study highlights that women in radiology are still underrepresented and play a marginal role in the field, struggling to reach top and leading positions.

SUMMARY The recent extensive literature on exploration and the resulting scientific advances has failed to highlight the contribution of Austrian enterprise to the study of natural history. The leading role of Joseph II among the neutral powers which assumed the carrying trade of the belligerents during the American War of Independence, furthered the development of collections for the Schönbrunn Park and Gardens which had been set up on scientific principles by his parents. On the conclusion of peace, Joseph entrusted to Professor Maerter a world-encompassing mission in the course of which the Chief Gardener Franz Boos and his assistant Georg Scholl travelled to South Africa to collect plants and animals. Boos pursued the mission to Isle de France and Bourbon (Mauritius and Reunion), conveyed by the then unknown Nicolas Baudin. He worked at the Jardin du Roi, Pamplemousses, with Nicolas Cere, or at Palma with Joseph Francois Charpentier de Cossigny. The linkage of Austrian and French horticultural expertise created a situation fraught with opportunities which were to lead Baudin to the forefront of exploration and scientific research as the century closed in the upheaval of the Revolutionary Wars.

Summary One cannot write about the relationship of young people and current sports stars in modern society without having previously studied the processes of mediation and globalisation of sport, and the transformation of traditional social values. The goal of the science and practice engaged in sports and education of young people is a constant quest for preserving universal ethical values and reconciling them with the modern-day social processes. This paper will present the result of a survey conducted with adolescents in five different Serbian cities in order to find the answer to the question if sportspersons were their favourite television role-models. According to the results of our survey, 45% of adolescents do not have a favourite TV personality and do not know for sure who that could be. Novak Đoković, who would be the choice of adults for a role model of the young, with 63.2% according to the survey conducted by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, scored 3.81% in our survey with adolescents who would chose Novak Đoković as their favourite TV personality. The necessity of raising media literacy of young people with the aim of clear identification of sports role models who are going to improve their quality of life still remains an open issue for further research on this course.
