The main program of the Sydney 19.7-Mc/s cross is devoted to the observation of the brightness distribution in a strip, extending some 10 degrees on either side of the galactic equator, the particular interest being the detection of absorption in HII regions. This program is well advanced, but since observing time is limited by ionospheric absorption and interference, records are not yet available for a number of galactic crossings. The detailed analysis of the observations has just begun, and will take some time. In the meantime a rough analysis of the data has been made in order to get a general picture of what might be expected, and this paper gives an outline of the results. The application of various instrumental corrections and the detailed analysis of ionospheric effects may subsequently necessitate some changes in the numbers involved in the calculations, but it is expected that the general conclusions will still hold.

This paper surveys references to the family in social legislation, with more specific regard to social security schemes providing coverage to a broad section of the population. Such references are seen as involving two types of questions. First, do statutory references to the family invoke a definite concept of the family cell ? And second, in what ways do family relationships influence one's position under social security legislation ? Thus the first part of the paper is an attempt to elucidate the concept of the family underlying social security legislation. This is done by considering the legislative treatment of three components of family relationships, which seem to play, either separately or in conjunction, a particularly significant role in statutes of this type : the network of interpersonal relationships that are included in the family, the concept of dependency, and the consequences attributed to cohabitation. The second part of the paper surveys the impact of family relationships on rights and duties under social security legislation. This part opens with a broad description of social legislation generally, followed by a threefold classification of social security schemes according to the type of economic hazard against which compensation is provided: loss of income, lack of income, increase in needs. The impact of family relationships in each group of statutes is then brought under detailed analysis, and a number of anomalies are pointed out. The general picture disclosed by the paper is one of severe confusion, both as to the concept of the family itself and as to the impact of family relationships on social security benefits. While inconsistencies of the latter kind may be explained and justified in a number of cases, it seems desirable that a single concept of the family be adhered to in all social security statutes. This, however, should not preclude variations where warranted by the policy of the Act, general standards of morality, or the particular purpose sought by statutory reference to family relationships.

The set of eight silver bowls excavated in Sadovy kurgan at the urban outskirts of Novocherkassk in 1962 includes a pair of bowls with medallions depicting scenes with Eros and Psyche. The detailed analysis of the element of the feathery pattern that covers the entire inner surface of the bowls reveals that it was applied by different craftsmen, though the bowls themselves were no doubt made in the same workshop. The central figures of the scenes on both medallions are tied to the columns decorated with garlands, on which one can see vessels. Both vessels have a spherical shape; each has a low stand and conical cover, and are the type of turibulum. One of the vessels bears a figure detail soldered to the right upper part of the vessel’s body. The second figure, soldered to the left side, is visible less clearly (fig. 2,2). The described figures look like protomes of griffins on a turibulum. A similar vessel was found in Khokhlach kurgan, and belongs to the objects produced in the 2nd – 1st centuries BC. We conclude that the identified similarity on manufacturing medallions on the bowls from Sadovy kurgan and the turibulum from Khokhlach kurgan most likely relates the finds to the workshops of the same region, probably the Eastern Mediterranean.

In the course of photographic studies of lightning with the Boys' camera, which have been described in previous papers, discharges have occasionally been observed which did not seem to fit in completely with the general picture to which the majority conformed. A sufficient number of these apparently anomalous discharges has now been obtained for their peculiarities to be cleared up and for us to be able to show that their behaviour is in accord with principles identical with whose which govern the more usual type of discharge. The anomalies to be discussed are of two binds. In the first place there are discharges which exhibit abnormal first leader processes. Some mention of these has been made in a previous paper in connexion with their electrical effects, which are characteristic and easi1y distinguishable (Schonland, Hodges and Collens 1938). Secondly there are discharges some of whose subsequent strokes adopt a new channel for park of their length.

S-boxes bring nonlinearity to block ciphers and strengthen their cryptographic security. A detailed analysis of the cryptographic properties of S-boxes of several block ciphers, such as SMS4, AES, Camellia and SEED, are made in this paper. Some algebraic properties of boolean function of S-boxes such as balanceness, non-linearity, algebraic degree and walsh spectrums are well investigated. We reveal the advantages and disadvantages of those S-boxes used in SMS4, AES, Camellia and SEED as compared with each other.

This paper presents a detailed account of field studies performed on one pool-weir and several Denil and vertical slot fishways in the province of Alberta. The pictures show the broad features of the flow. The velocity profiles obtained in the field studies have confirmed the measurements made in the laboratory on scale models and have enhanced the general picture, particularly for the vertical slot fishways. This paper provides hydraulic engineers with information for understanding the primary hydraulic characteristics of fishways. Key words: fishways, field studies, hydraulics, open-channel flow, turbulent flow.

The purpose of the article was to present the dynamics of the sale and lease of land from the State Treasury’s agricultural resources. Detailed analysis was made in 2000-2015. The interpretation of the existing regulations concerning on the trade in agricultural real estate of the State Treasury’s agricultural resources was also interpreted. Research has shown that in the initial period of ownership transformations in agriculture a large role was played by the agricultural lease. In the subsequent years, the role of land sales was gradually increasing, which was undoubtedly influenced by the current legal regulations in this area. The survey also showed that the factor influencing the sale of land is their price, and on rent the level of rent.

The current analysis of slave society in Brazil has involved a rethinking of the traditional plantation-dominated model, with a new stress on the wide dispersion of slaves among whites and non-whites and their involvement in a lively internal economy as well as in extractive industries. This general picture is confirmed in a detailed analysis of the economy and slavery practised in the two major provinces of Minas Gerais and São Paulo in the late 1820s and early 1830s. Slaves were held in small units and they could be found in every region and occupied in every major economic activity. Some regions even had positive growth rates of the resident slave population despite the massive arrival of Africans. Finally we find women and free coloured as significant slave-owners, with the latter especially concentrated in the trades.

AbstractRegional and temporal patterns in brooch use in Britannia are studied, confirming and challenging ‘received wisdoms’ about ‘regionality’. The complexity of the ‘Fibula Event Horizon’ is brought into sharp focus; a similarly complex and unexplained ‘Fibula Abandonment Horizon’ is also clearly demonstrated. Conclusions are insensitive to assumptions about use-life. Detailed analysis for the family of trumpet brooches casts light on hitherto unappreciated features of ‘regionality’. Comparison with continental data suggests the British temporal patterns may be reflecting a wider north-western province pattern. Under-studied aspects of bias in metal-detected finds and their implications for studies of this kind are noted. The Supplementary Material available online (http://journals.cambridge.org/bri) contains tabular information on the data used in the study and additional analyses that support some of the assertions made in the main text.

White clay smoking pipes found on the territory of the city of Nien and the fortress of Nienschanz reflect the general picture of the distribution of the objects in the cities of the Baltic region. The quantitative and qualitative composition of the pipes was changing throughout the 17 century and in the layers of the second half of the 17century, the pipes become mass finds. A significant part of the pipes, especially of the first half of the 17 century, does not have stamps and can only be dated according to the form. The available features testify to the fact that the main part of them was made in Holland. The narrow dating of the stamps, alongside with the finds of coins, allow us to clarify the dating of separate complexes of the studied area and the dynamics of the pipe arrival in this remote part of the Baltic States.
