Abandoned Consumers: Deregulation and Fraud in the California Auto Insurance Industry

This paper presents a case study of frauds committed by offshore companies in the California auto insurance market in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The opportunities for these crimes were created by two factors: the departure of legitimate insurance companies from the market and the adoption of deregulatory policies by state regulators. The case study illustrates some of the consequences of the increasingly common situation in the US in which consumers find themselves abandoned both by government and by legitimate providers of goods and services. The criminal consequences of this situation have also been observed in other markets.

Discovery of digital innovations is a key organizational capability for sustaining competitive advantage. Despite its importance, discovery of digital innovations is still ill understood. In this paper, the authors seek to provide a theory-based practice for digital innovation discovery. To meet this objective, they source the theories of knowledge and knowledge combination. Data for this case study were collected through semi-structured interviews and a quantitative questionnaire from three pension insurance companies. The data were analyzed by using principal component analysis and by constructing biplots based of the results. Two significant dimensions in the digitalization needs that guide knowledge synthesis were recognized: the importance of adopting the enabler and the volume of resources needed to adopt the enabler. A closer look at the enablers revealed that the most business-critical current digital business enablers for the pension insurance industry are business process automation, online services, and big data.

Many Muslims, for religious convictions are reluctant to take up conventional insurance as it is deemed to have uncertainty, gambling and interest, which are prohibited by religion. The purpose of this paper is to examine Islamic Insurance in Algeria and analyse a suitable regulatory framework. One can argue that the trend towards Islamic insurance in Algeria contributes to raising the level of insurance culture, which will help to mobilize more savings. After studying the topic, we can provide a road map to better regulating the Islamic insurance market because the Islamic companies could not function in the absence of an Islamic insurance act. In the absence of such a framework, regulators often treat Islamic insurance companies similarly to conventional insurance companies, which hinders the development of Islamic Insurance Industry.

Because it helps people reduce the likelihood of making a bad investment, whether it’s worth it, and how do you combine the various factors. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the value of the company’s investment in the insurance industry. AIG, ALL and MET were selected from a large number of insurance companies. Using P/E and P/S ratio to compare the prospects of several companies of the same type through specific data, investment analysis. Finally, the best companies to invest in among the three companies are obtained by combining the display situation, and give final investment advice.

As competition in international and national markets intensifies, it is important to create a system to protect economic actors from potential threats and adverse factors. To solve these issues, it is necessary to ensure the effective functioning of the insurance market, which is one of the important components of financial security. Without the developed insurance market, it will be impossible to ensure the social and economic progress of the country, its corporate security, welfare etc. The current state of the world insurance market has certain features, which makes it possible to adapt to the change of the modern world and improve the work of the insurance industry. To create a clear insurance market, it is necessary to develop an effective policy as to the insurance activities of both the insurer and the reinsurers, as well as to establish solvency insurance systems. The development of the insurance market is accompanied by many economic, regulatory, organizational, methodological and personnel issues. The publication is aimed at studying and distinguishing the peculiarities of development of the world market of insurance services. On the basis of studying the works of scholars, the main features of the modern insurance market are provided; key signs of the insurance industry are presented; statistical information on trends in the insurance market development during 2019 in the following regions: North and Latin America, Western Europe, Asia, European developing countries. The impact of COVID-19 on the state of the insurance industry in Europe has been characterized. As result of studying the key trends in the future development of the insurance market, the main components that are necessary for the formation of an effective policy of insurance companies in the context of COVID-19 have been formed as follows: digitalization, innovation, analytics, feedback.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the regulatory-driven market structure on firm pricing behaviour by testing the structure-conduct-performance (S-C-P) hypothesis for both life and non-life insurance markets in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach – Using a panel data on 14 life and 22 non-life insurers from 2007 to 2011, the authors employed the Herfindahl Hirschman Index and concentration ratio as proxies for the S-C-P hypothesis while efficiency scores were estimated using the data envelopment analysis technique to proxy for the efficient structure (ES) hypothesis. The dependent variable, profitability was measured as return on assets while controlling for size, underwriting risk, leverage, GDP growth rate and inflation. The models were estimated using the panel corrected standard errors of Beck and Katz (1995) and random effects estimations. Findings – The results from the empirical estimation provide ample evidence in support for ES hypothesis for both life and non-life insurance markets. While conflicting results was found for SCP hypothesis in the non-life insurance market, it was rejected in the life insurance market. The findings also point to an increasing level of competition in both life and non-life insurance industry in Ghana though they still remain concentrated with the life insurance sector having high levels of efficiency compared to the non-life sector. Practical implications – The findings of the study will enhance the understanding of firm behaviour in the new markets created to shape regulatory and competition policies of the regulator to promote consumer welfare while ensuring a stable industry to enhance its role in economic development. Originality/value – This is the first study to test the market power and efficient hypotheses on the insurance industry in Ghana. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to examine the determinants of profitability in the non-life insurance market.

With ~32 crore policies in-force and over ~11000 branches across locations, Life Insurance Industry in India is the 10th largest across the globe in terms of premium contribution. India's share in Global Life Insurance Market was 2.73% during 2019. The life insurance industry is also one of the largest employers with both direct and indirect employment. Life Insurance penetration in India is at 2.82% and density at 58 USD, which is way below the global statistics. This gives immense opportunity for global players to venture into the Indian insurance market. With a proposal for an FDI hike to 74%, we are expecting many big players to enter the Indian market. However, the attractiveness of the industry not depends solely on the market opportunity but also on the bottom line, which is profitability. Indian Insurance Industry is one of the highly regulated markets across the globe and perceived to be the lowest profit-making insurance market. Hence, the need for the study to improve the profitability of life insurance companies in India through structural and policy measures. JEL Classification Codes: G22, I13, O16, A10, E22, G10.

Основной целью является исследование влияния пандемии короновируса на страховую отрасль, основные задачи: 1) проанализировать показатели по сборам страховой премии за 2020 г.; 2) рассмотреть способы адаптации страховых компаний к новым условиям работы; 3) выявить тенденции и сделать прогноз развития рынка страховых услуг на 2021 г. Объектом исследования является: страховой рынок, предметом - особенности работы страховщиков во время пандемии COVID19. Научная новизна заключается в исследовании деятельности страховщиков в РФ в условиях пандемии, снижения продаж, дистанционной работы. The article examines the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on the Russian insurance market in 2020 with a forecast for 2021. The main goal is to study the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the insurance industry, the main tasks are: 1) to analyze the indicators on the collection of insurance premiums for 2020; 2) consider ways of adapting insurance companies to new working conditions; 3) identify trends and forecast the development of the insurance market in 2021. The object of the study is the insurance market and peculiarities of the work of insurers during the COVID19 pandemic. The scientific novelty lies in the study of the activities of insurers in the Russian Federation in the context of a pandemic, declining sales, teleworking.

According to the logic of economic laws of market economy, the existence of enterprises is determined by it as to organize and realize the sale of their products and services. So, insurance companies or companies in this case can only exist if developed, increasing their activities in the field of insurance services that offer their clients. The need for marketing development in the field of insurance as service activities, in economic conditions of today's market it is necesery increase, so even the functioning of the insurance market today depends on the marketing of products that insurnace companies offer customers through insurance market. In theoretical terms it is defined as the marketing concept of the market, management and leadership in the company, which instead of former production orientation, the orientation of the market inaugurates the general policy of the enterprise. Marketing plays a key role in insurance market to meet supply and demand, because insurance products are products that are not seen, not touched, but exist only in the form of pledges. Selling a promise requires a confidence, a belief that the service provider will be realized if the loss will occur. In any other economic or economic subject, whether manufacturer or service does not have such kind of product. Marketing insurance plays a manifold, on the one hand made product promotion security, then raise the awareness of citizens about models of protection from risks , increased reliability to consumers , the cost of paying for the promise given by the insurer if a loss occurs will accomplished.
