A comparative study of dry matter intake and digestive pool variations in Manchega and Lacaune dairy sheep

Manchega (MN) and Lacaune (LC) are two semi-coarse-wooled dairy breeds with similar size but different milk yield, the latter producing twice as much milk as the former (Pérez, 1997). The aim of this experiment was to compare, under the same feed conditions, dry matter intake and performance in late pregnancy and lactation and digestive pools of these two breeds.Twenty-four ewes, 12 per breed, were used in three different periods: late pregnancy (8 weeks), rearing (5 weeks) and milking (7 weeks). At lambing, average body weight was 74.4 vs 78.5 kg, for LC and MN, respectively. Dry matter intake (DMI), apparent dry matter digestibility (DMD), body condition score (BCS) and milk yield (MY) standardized according to Bocquier et al. (1993) were recorded.

Pregnancy and lactation, especially when concurrent, create a rather metabolically demanding situation in dairy ruminants, but little is known about their effects on offspring phenotype and milk yield. Here, we evaluated the impact of pregnancy and lactation on the metabolic traits and productive performance of Lacaune dairy sheep and their offspring. Productive performance was measured in terms of milk yield, body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), and size. Productivity was assessed during mid-pregnancy (75 ± 5 d) and late pregnancy (142 ± 4 d) and at 52 ± 5 d in the postpartum period. During pregnancy, high-yielding ewes had higher BW, BCS, plasma glucose, cholesterol, β-OHB, and NEFA than low-yielding ewes, but lower levels of lactate and urea. High-yielding animals had lower BCS after lambing, but their lambs showed greater growth. Productivity during lactation was affected by ewe age and parity: Mature ewes (but not maiden sheep) whose BCS increased steeply during pregnancy yielded more milk in the subsequent lactation than those whose BCS did not increase. Lamb BW and size were positively associated with milk yield in the subsequent lactation. Mature ewes had higher yields than maiden sheep, and mature ewes with multiple pregnancies produced more milk than those with singleton pregnancies. Ewes with male singleton pregnancies also showed higher yield than those with female singletons. These results demonstrate that high-yielding dairy sheep, when appropriately fed and managed, can adequately cover the metabolic demands of pregnancy and high milk production (even when concurrent) without losing productivity.

ABSTRACTMasham ewes carrying single, twin or triplet foetuses were offered a ration of concentrates which increased from 200 to 650 g per ewe per day over the last 7 weeks of pregnancy in 2 years. Silage was offered ad libitum and the voluntary intake of each ewe was measured. In the first year, 30 ewes were offered a poorly-preserved, wet silage (A) which had a low digestibility, followed by a better-preserved silage (B) which had a higher digestibility and dry-matter concentration. There was an increase in silage intake when the change was made from A to B. In the following year, 32 ewes were offered silage (C) which was well preserved, similar in digestibility to B but with a lower dry-matter concentration. The ewes ate more silage organic matter (g/kg live weight) with C than A (12·77 v. 9·34) in weeks 15 to 17 of pregnancy but more of B than C (13·76 v. 10·38) in weeks 19 to 20. Ewes carrying single lambs ate more silage and had a slower rate of decrease in silage intake when the concentrate ration was increased as pregnancy progressed. As litter size increased there-was either greater loss or smaller gain in body condition score.

The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters of milk yield (MY), intake traits, type traits, body condition score (BCS), and number of breedings (NOB) in first lactation Canadian Holsteins with a focus on the possibility of using type traits as an indicator of feed intake. Data were obtained from the Canadian Dairy Network and Valacta. A mixed linear model was fitted under REML for the statistical analysis. The multivariate (five traits) model included the fixed effects of age at calving, stage of lactation, and herd-round-classifier for type traits; age at calving, stage of lactation, and herd–year–season of calving (HYS) for BCS; age at calving and HYS for MY, feed intake, and NOB. Animal and residual effects were fitted as random effects for all traits. Estimates of heritabilities for MY, dry matter intake (DMI), angularity, body depth, stature, dairy strength, final score, BCS, and NOB were 0.41, 0.13, 0.24, 0.30, 0.50, 0.30, 0.22, 0.20, and 0.02, respectively. Genetic correlations between type traits and DMI ranged from 0.16 to 0.60. Results indicate that type traits appear to have the potential to predict DMI as a combination/index of two or more traits.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of yeast based organic selenium (Se) on post-partum progesterone concentration, blood metabolites, service period and milk yield. Dairy Jersey cows (n=15) having almost similar body weight, age, parity and body condition score were divided into three groups of equal number. One group served as a control that was given no Se supplementation. Second and third groups were supplemented with Se at the rate of 0.3 and 0.4 mg/kg of dry matter intake, respectively. The results revealed that after parturition, there was significantly (P<0.05) higher concentration of progesterone in Se treated group of Jersey cows (P<0.05). Week wise, concentration of progesterone in blood increased significantly (P<0.05). There was a decrease in length of service period in Se treated groups. Blood concentrations of glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride increased significantly (P<0.05) on weekly basis. However, these blood metabolites did not change significantly between the control and Se treated groups. Milk yield did not change significantly between the control and Se treated groups. The results of current study indicated that supplementation of yeast based organic Se at the rate of 0.4 mg/kg dry matter intake improved the progesterone concentration and decreased the service period but had no effect on blood metabolites and milk yield.
