Microbial inoculants are applied to forage at the time of ensiling to accelerate the decline of pH during the initial stage of silage fermentation, to preserve plant carbohydrates through homofermentation, and to preserve plant protein by decreasing proteolysis and deamination. Thus, inoculated silages are expected to improve animal performance. Whole crop barley has a low buffering capacity and abundant fermentable carbohydrates and is considered relatively easy to ensile. Results of previous experiments indicated that lactic acid bacteria-based inoculants have the potential to improve the ensilage of whole crop barley (Kung and Ranjit, 2001). The objective of the present study was to determine the chemical composition and in situ dry matter degradability of whole crop barley silage treated with one of two different types of inoculants (Lactobacillus plantarum or mixed with Pediococcus pentosaceus plus propionbacter freudenreichii as provide 1×105 CFU of lactic acid producing bacteria plus 1×104 CFU propionbacterium per g of DM).

Silage fermentation is progressively restricted as the extent of pre-wilting increases (O'Kiely et_al., 1988). The magnitude of the improvement in silage nutritive value in response to a lactic acid bacteria inoculant could be related to the extent of the fermentation in the untreated silage. The objective of this experiment was to determine if the response in silage nutritive value to a Lactobacillus plantarum inoculant was similar at different levels of dry matter (DM) concentration.

Abstract Broussonetia papyrifera (BP) is a woody roughage source with high protein content. The experiment was conducted to explore the effects of different growth height (GH) on the BP yield, chemical composition, silage fermentation profile, as well as ruminants in vitro and in situ digestibility of different parts of BP. The three different harvested GH of BP were 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 m, respectively. Samples from leaf, stem, and whole plant of BP were collected (each one has three replicates), making silage, and detected the nutritional composition of them. The results were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance with Duncan’s multiple comparisons. Fresh weight increased with the GH increased (P < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) yield of leaf, and CP yield of whole plant between 1.2 to 1.6 m GH (P > 0.05). With the increase of GH, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of BP increased, while CP content decreased (P < 0.05). Stem had the highest NDF and acid detergent fiber (ADF) content, and the lowest CP content and buffer capacity. The BP silage fermentation quality was deteriorated (lactic acid content decreased and pH values increased) with GH increased. For the different parts of BP, leaf silage had the highest pH and stem silage had the highest lactic acid content (P < 0.05). The leaf and its silage had the highest in vitro dry matter digestibility and gas production compared to others. The BP in situ digestibility were corresponded with in vitro results. DM, CP, NDF, and ADF effective digestibility rates of whole plant with 1.2 m GH were 439.6, 455.1, 412.9, and 381.3 g/kg, respectively. In conclusion, the BP nutritional quality decreased with GH increased and it could be used as a potential feedstuff for ruminants.

Twenty-three strains of lactic acid bacteria were tested by deferred antagonism methods for bacteriocin-like activity against types A and B spores from 11 proteolytic and nonproteolytic Clostridium botulinum strains. Pediococcus pentosaceus ATCC 43200, Pediococcus pentosaceus ATCC 43201, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ATCC 11454, Lactobacillus acidophilus N2, Lactobacillus plantarum Lb75, Lactobacillus plantarum Lb592, and Lactobacillus plantarum BN exhibited bacteriocin-like inhibition of all C. botulinum strains tested. By excluding inhibition due to hydrogen peroxide, acid, and lytic phage and confirming their proteinaceous nature, the inhibitors were confirmed as bacteriocins. The minimum inhibitory cell concentrations (MICC) required to produce 1 mm radius inhibition zones were determined by direct antagonism testing. Only strains 43200, 43201, 11454, and N2 were inhibitory when cultured simultaneously with the botulinal spores. The MICCs of strains antagonistic to C. botulinum spores by simultaneous testing ranged between 1.6 × 105and 4.7 × 107CFU/ml. Based on the MICCs, P. pentosaceus 43200 was most inhibitory to C. botulinum.

Sugarcane silage can be used in animal production systems; however, it is important to apply additives to improve its chemical composition and fermentative quality. We evaluated the effect of chemical (urea and calcium oxide (CaO)) and microbial (Lactobacillus buchneri (LB), Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus pentosaceus, and Propionibacterium acidipropionici) additives on chemical composition, fermentation profile, microorganism population, and production of ethanol and other volatile organic compounds in sugarcane silage. Treatments studied were silage without inoculant (SS), SS with LB, SS with Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus, SS with Lactobacillus plantarum and Propionibacterium acidipropionici, SS with 5 g CaO/kg fresh material (FM) (5CaO), SS with 10 g CaO/kg FM (10CaO), SS with 5 g urea/kg FM (5urea), and SS with 10 g urea/kg FM (10urea). The highest crude protein content (P = 0.001) and the lowest N-linked to fibre content (P = 0.001) occurred when applying urea. None of the treatments reduced the presence of yeast (P = 0.054), but a trend was detected of treatments based on CaO as promising in this Control. The silages treated with CaO had lower ethyl ester and ethanol (average for CaO-based treatments of 0.012 g/kg dry matter and 0.695 g/kg dry matter, respectively), and silages treated with 10urea had less acetone (P = 0.001) and methanol (P = 0.001). The sugarcane silages treated with chemical additive CaO reduced ethanol production and ester formation. There was a high correlation (r = 0.984) between ethyl acetate + ethyl lactate and ethanol contents.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of additives on the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of tetraploid black locust (TBL). The TBL leaves silage was either untreated (control) or treated with 1 × 106 cfu/g FM Lactobacillus plantarum (L), 1% glucose (G), 3% molasses (M), a combination of 1% glucose and Lactobacillus plantarum (L+G), or a combination of 3% molasses and Lactobacillus plantarum (L+M). Fermentation quality, chemical composition and nutrient digestibility were then analyzed. Ethanol and acetic acid concentrations were the dominant fermentation products in all silages except L+M silage. The L, G and L+G treatments failed to influence the fermentation. The M treatment increased (P<0.05) the lactic acid concentration and lowered (P<0.05) the pH when compared with control silage. The best fermentation properties were observed in L+M silage, as indicated by the dominance of lactic acid over ethanol in fermentation products. The M and L+M silages exhibited higher (P<0.05) dry matter, and M silage showed higher residual water-soluble carbohydrates than the control. Ensiling increased (P<0.05) the in vitro dry matter, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber degradability of TBL. Among the silages, M silage had the highest levels of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber degradability. The obtained results suggested that application of lactic acid bacteria together with 3% molasses could be an effective strategy to prevent the occurrence of ethanol fermentation and improve fermentation quality of TBL silage; addition of fermentable sugars to TBL improves nutrient availability to ruminants.

The effect of ensiling barley treated with two bacterial inoculants containing mixtures of Lactobacillus plantarum and Enterococcus faecium (1.0 × 105 cfu g−1 as fed silage) on the nutritional value and aerobic stability of barley silage was examined. Inoculants differed in the strains they contained and were originally selected by Pioneer Hi-Bred International for use with corn or alfalfa silage, SILA-BAC® (1174), or with grass silage (X2637). Concentrations of water-soluble carbohydrates were higher (P < 0.05) in inoculated than in control silages. Although inoculants appeared to increase the numbers of lactic acid producing bacteria (LAB) at ensiling, post-ensiling numbers (cfu g−1) of yeasts and molds were lower (P < 0.05) in inoculated than in control silages. Lactic acid concentrations and pH were similar among the silages and variations m the growth of yeast and mold populations could not be explained by differences in the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) among silages. Inoculation of barley silage with either inoculant increased (P < 0.01) the average daily gain of lambs. A digestibility experiment with 12 growing ram lambs showed that inoculants did not alter (P > 0.05) DM intake, feed efficiency or the digestion of DM, organic matter, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Nitrogen intake and retention were greater (P < 0.05) in lambs fed silage inoculated with 1174 as compared with control silage. Yeast populations were increased (P < 0.05) in control and 1174 after 2 d of exposure to air but it required 13 d for a similar yeast population to be established in X2637 silage. Increases in the mold populations within the silages were noted after 2, 5 and 13 d of exposure to air for control, 1174 and X2637, respectively. The temperature of control silage increased (P < 0.05) 2 d after exposure to air, whereas increases in temperature were delayed for 4 d in 1174 and 8 d in X2637. Temperatures rose as high as 30 °C in control silage, but did not exceed 24 °C in inoculated silages during the 13 d period. Abstract Background: Lactic acid bacteria have been proposed for the control of undesirable fermentation and subsequently aerobic deterioration due to their ability to produce antimicrobial metabolites in silage mass. To investigate the effect of specific LAB on silage fermentation characteristics and bacterial community composition of oat in cold region, silages were treated without additives (CK) or with three LAB strains (LB, Lactobacillus buchneri; nLP, low temperature tolerant Lactobacillus planrtarum; pLP, phenyllactic acid-producing Lactobacillus plantarum), and then stored at ambient temperature (< 20 ℃) for 30, 60 and 90 days. Results: Compared with CK, inoculation of LAB decreased final pH value, butyric acid content, ammonia-N of total N and dry matter loss of silage. Treatments with nLP and pLP increased (P < 0.05) lactic acid content, whereas LB increased (P < 0.05) acetic acid content of silage. Lactobacillus and Leuconstoc dominated in the silages with relative abundance of 68.29~96.63%. A prolonged storage period enhanced growth of Leuconstoc in pLP treated silage. In addition, pLP increased (P < 0.05) aerobic stability of silage as compared with nLP. Conclusions: In conclusion, inoculation of LAB improved silage fermentation and/or delayed aerobic deterioration by shifting bacterial community composition during ensiling. Phenyllactic acid-producing Lactobacillus plantarum as an inoculant exhibited potential for high quality silage production.

SUMMARYThe free-acid content of grass silages was reduced by the addition of sodium bicarbonate to the silage and increased by additions of lactic acid. In each of four comparisons the addition of sodium bicarbonate to increase pH from about 4·0 to about 5·4 resulted in significant increases in intake of dry matter which ranged from 9·7 to 20·7%. Intake of organic matter was consistently increased by this partial neutralization treatment, but the increases were not significant in all experiments. The addition of sodium as sodium chloride rather than sodium bicarbonate did not alter the intake of a highly acid silage. Addition of lactic acid to reduce the pH of a silage feed from 5·4 to 3·8 resulted in a decrease in dry-matter intake of 22%. The correlation between dry-matter intake and the silage characteristics: titratable acidity, total organic-acid content, lactic-acid content and pH were all significant.It is concluded that the acids produced during the normal silage fermentation can limit the intake of the silage and it is suggested that chemical treatments to preserve wet grass without the presence or formation of large quantities of acids be investigated.

In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of bacterial inoculants as silage additives. A number of recent studies have shown improvements in silage fermentation, feed intake and milk production following the use of inoculant additives at ensiling. Even when compared with well preserved control silages, studies at this Institute have shown that treatment with an inoculant of Lactobacillus plantarum at ensiling has produced positive responses in both silage intake and milk yields (Gordon, 1989; Mayne, 1990). This leads to the hypothesis that, unlike the traditional acid additives, application of an inoculant at ensiling to grass which has been wilted to a high dry matter (DM) concentration may still produce improvements in milk production in comparison with untreated silages. The objective of the present study therefore was to examine if the response to the use of a bacterial inoculant at ensiling was influenced by the wilting of grass.
