An increased use of nuclear power is now accepted as inevitable by many people, but not without some unease, and the accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima as described in the media bring little reassurance. So how dangerous is radiation exposure, for instance to those living within the influence of such accidents?

Energy is the backbone for sustainable development. Any nation cannot progress without adequate resources of energy i.e. must have energy security. In various sources of generating power, i.e. nuclear, coal, hydro, geothermal, wind, solar, crude oil and biomass etc., nuclear is one of the source of energy which is less understood source of energy among our masses. Many misconceptions and rumours are associated with the nuclear energy like nuclear energy fosters nuclear weapons, nuclear radiation is deadly and nuclear reactors are not safe for human being and environment etc. This technological awareness gap of understanding Nuclear Power is the most challenging area for science and technology communication in India today. India faces formidable challenges in meeting its energy needs and providing adequate energy of desired quality to consumers in a sustainable manner at a reasonable cost. Nuclear power can play a bigger role offering sustainable solution to global energy problems. Those working in nuclear technology field face increasing scrutiny from public, the media, political authorities and NGO’s. This paper deals with the need of science and technology communication on nuclear energy for better understanding on the issue and a communication strategy adopted by Vigyan Prasar under ‘Public Awareness Campaign on Nuclear Energy’ as an important way in which a nation can stave off from the misconceptions, fear and uninformed societies.

On March 11, 2011, the northeastern coast of Japan was struck by 9.0-magnitude earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami. Aside from the huge toll in people’s lives and severe damages to property, the tremor sent the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on a tailspin, causing hydrogen explosions in three reactors, and sending radioactive materials into the air and bodies of water. Declared the largest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, the crisis threatened neighboring countries, including China (International Business Times, 2011). On March 28, low levels of iodine-131, cesium-137 and strontium, believed to have drifted from Japan, were detected in the air over Heilongjiang province in the northeast part of China and in seawater samples collected in the eastern coastal areas (Qianjiang Eve News, 2011). Because these chemicals can enter the food chain and adversely affect human health (Ifeng.com, 2011), people became understandably anxious and the government had to avert panic. This study asks: How did the Chinese media report the risks attendant to this event? A content analysis of 45 straight news reports published by the Chinese press from March 16, 2011 to April 25, 2011 was conducted. The analysis focused on how the media explained the risk, portrayed potential harm, reported on government actions to safeguard public health, and provided suggestions to reduce public fear. The sources of information cited in the reports were also identified. The articles examined were collected from People.com, a comprehensive online archive of news reports, using “Fukushima” and “nuclear radiation” as search terms. The results indicated journalistic practices that left much to be desired in terms of risk reporting. First, the articles explained little about the technical aspects of the radiation leaks and failed to give audiences a general indication of levels of risk. Second, the media over-emphasized the government’s position that the environment was safe despite the more rampant word-of-mouth reports to the contrary, a slant that may have done nothing to allay public fear. Third, there was a dearth of information about what the government intends to do to alleviate the situation and suggestions about what people can do to protect themselves. The themes of news reports may be attributed to experts from research institutions and government officials who were the most frequently cited sources of facts, analyses, interpretations, and opinions. Scientists and nuclear experts were cited the most in the news reports.

Assessing workers’ safety and health during the decommissioning of nuclear power plants (NPPs) is an important procedure in terms of occupational radiation exposure (ORE). Optimizing the radiation exposure through the “As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)” principle is a very important procedure in the phase of nuclear decommissioning. Using the VISIPLAN 3D ALARA planning tool, this study aimed at assessing the radiological doses to workers during the dismantling of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) at Kori NPP unit 1. Fragmentation and segmentation cutting processes were applied to cut the primary component. Using a simulation function in VISIPLAN, the external exposure doses were calculated for each work operation. Fragmentation involved 18 operations, whereas segmentation comprised 32 operations for each fragment. Six operations were additionally performed for both hot and cold legs of the RPV. The operations were conducted based on the radioactive waste drum’s dimensions. The results in this study indicated that the collective doses decreased as the components were cut into smaller segments. The fragmentation process showed a relatively higher collective dose compared to the segmentation operation. The active part of the RPV significantly contributed to the exposure dose and thus the shielding of workers and reduced working hours need to be considered. It was found that 60Co contained in the stainless steel of the reactor vessel greatly contributed to the dose as an activation material. The sensitivity analysis, which was conducted for different cutting methods, showed that laser cutting took a much longer time than plasma cutting and contributed higher doses to the workers. This study will be helpful in carrying out the occupational safety and health management of decommissioning workers at Kori NPP unit 1 in the near future.

RF tags based on RFID (Radio-frequency Identification) technology have been widely used in various fields including power plant construction and maintenance for the purpose of improving the identification and traceability of the many components in the facility. To date, various types of tags have been developed, including tags that are resistant to chemicals or high-temperature environments, which are used in specialized fields. When considering widespread use of RF tags in nuclear power plants, there is a concern about the effects of radiation on the RF tags, because the data stored in the tag may receive radiation damage, resulting in corruption of data. Here, we describe a newly designed RF tag that achieves resistance to radiation damage by attaching a radiation shield layer and incorporating automatic data-correction software. This radiation-resistant RF tag has been tested under real radiation exposure fields to verify the intended radiation-resistant functions. It is expected that the use of these radiation-resistant RF tags with a data reader and database system will increase the capabilities of RF tags applied to nuclear power plants and it is also expected to lead to reductions in worker radiation exposure doses.

Abstract Until the 1990s, a commonly held view in Japan was that Buddhism had withdrawn from public space, or that Buddhism had become a private concern. Although Buddhist organizations conducted relief and support activities for the people affected at the time of the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, they were often seen to be out of place, and little attention was given to them by the media. However recently there are areas in which Buddhism can be seen as playing new roles in the public sphere. Religious organizations seem to be expected to perform functions in fields that lie outside the narrow definition of religion. These expectations are becoming stronger among Buddhist organizations as well. In this paper, I describe some areas in the public sphere in which Buddhist groups are starting to play important roles including disaster relief, support of the poor and people without relatives, provision of palliative care and spiritual care, and involvement in environmental and nuclear plant issues.
