Thin films thermoelectric module fabricated by pulsed-dc magnetron sputtering system using Ca3Co4O9(p-type) and ZnO (n-type) targets of 60 mm diameter and 2.5 mm thickness, which were made from powder precursor, and obtained by solid state reaction. Thin films of p-Ca-Co-O (Seebeck coefficient = 143.85 µV/K, electrical resistivity = 4.80 mΩm, power factor = 4.31 µW/m K2) and n-ZnO (Seebeck coefficient =229.24 µV/K, electrical resistivity = 5.93 mΩm, power factor = 8.86 µW/m K2) were used to make a thermoelectric module, which consist of four pairs of legs connected by copper electrodes (0.5 mm thickness, 3.0 mm width, and 3.0-8.0 mm length). Each leg is 3.0 mm width, 20.0 mm length, and 0.44 µm thickness on a glass substrate of 1.0 mm thickness in dimension 25.0x50.0 mm2. For preliminary test, a module was used to thermoelectric power generation. It was found that the open circuit voltage increased with increasing temperature difference from 3 mV at 5 K up to 20 mV at 78 K. The internal resistance of a module reached a value of 14.52 MΩ. This test indicated that a module can be generated the electrical power. Therefore, it can be used as an important platform for further thin films thermoelectric module research.

N-type Bi2Te3 and p-type Sb2Te3 thermoelectric thin films have been prepared by RF and DC co-sputtering. The Seebeck coefficient of n-type Bi2Te3 and p-type Sb2Te3 thin films is about -122 μVK-1 and 108 μVK-1, the power factor is about 0.82×10-3 Wm-1K-2 and 1.60×10-3 Wm-1K-2. Then, the films have been selected to fabricate the thin film thermoelectric generator. The results show that the open-circuit voltage of 12.2 mV and the output power of 3.32 μW are obtained for a thin film generator with the temperature difference at 60 K.

The aim of this study is to reveal the influences of carbon nanotube (CNT) and polymer type as well as CNT content on electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient (S), and the resulting power factor (PF) and figure of merit (ZT). Different commercially available and laboratory made CNTs were used to prepare melt-mixed composites on a small scale. CNTs typically lead to p-type composites with positive S-values. This was found for the two types of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNT) whereby higher Seebeck coefficient in the corresponding buckypapers resulted in higher values also in the composites. Nitrogen doped MWCNTs resulted in negative S-values in the buckypapers as well as in the polymer composites. When using single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) with a positive S-value in the buckypapers, positive (polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)) or negative (polyamide 66 (PA66), polyamide 6 (PA6), partially aromatic polyamide (PARA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)) S-values were obtained depending on the matrix polymer and SWCNT type. The study shows that the direct production of n-type melt-mixed polymer composites from p-type commercial SWCNTs with relatively high Seebeck coefficients is possible. The highest Seebeck coefficients obtained in this study were 66.4 µV/K (PBT/7 wt % SWCNT Tuball) and −57.1 µV/K (ABS/0.5 wt % SWCNT Tuball) for p- and n-type composites, respectively. The highest power factor and ZT of 0.28 µW/m·K2 and 3.1 × 10−4, respectively, were achieved in PBT with 4 wt % SWCNT Tuball.

We investigated the effects of Fe3O4 (0~0.1 wt.%) on the thermoelectric properties of Bi1Sb4Te7.5 alloy prepared by mechanical alloying process. The Seebeck coefficient increased with Fe3O4 content, but the power factor decreased with Fe3O4 content because of the decreased electrical conductivity. The thermal conductivity decreased with Fe3O4. The carrier concentration measured by the Hall effect measurement decreased with Fe3O4. The thermal conductivity of 0.1 wt.% Fe3O4 alloy was 0.814 W/Km, 20%lower than that of Fe3O4 free alloy. As a result, the small addition of Fe3O4 improved the Z value owing to the decreased thermal conductivity by adding Fe3O4. The Z value of 0.01 wt.% Bi1Sb4Te7.5 alloy was 3.1×10-3 /K, the highest value among the prepared alloys.

AbstractPorous silicon (Si) is a low thermal conductivity material, which has high potential for thermoelectric devices. However, low output performance of porous Si hinders the development of thermoelectric performance due to low electrical conductivity. The large contact resistance from nonlinear contact between porous Si and metal is one reason for the reduction of electrical conductivity. In this paper, p- and n-type porous Si were formed on Si substrate by metal-assisted chemical etching. To decrease contact resistance, p- and n-type spin on dopants are employed to dope an impurity element into p- and n-type porous Si surface, respectively. Compared to the Si substrate with undoped porous samples, ohmic contact can be obtained, and the electrical conductivity of doped p- and n-type porous Si can be improved to 1160 and 1390 S/m, respectively. Compared with the Si substrate, the special contact resistances for the doped p- and n-type porous Si layer decreases to 1.35 and 1.16 mΩ/cm2, respectively, by increasing the carrier concentration. However, the increase of the carrier concentration induces the decline of the Seebeck coefficient for p- and n-type Si substrates with doped porous Si samples to 491 and 480 μV/K, respectively. Power factor is related to the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of thermoelectric material, which is one vital factor that evaluates its output performance. Therefore, even though the Seebeck coefficient values of Si substrates with doped porous Si samples decrease, the doped porous Si layer can improve the power factor compared to undoped samples due to the enhancement of electrical conductivity, which facilitates its development for thermoelectric application.

ABSTRACTMeasurements of the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and Hall mobility from -300 K to -1300 K have been carried out on multiphase hotpressed samples of the nominal composition B6Si. In all samples the conductivity and the p-type Seebeck coefficient both increase smoothly with increasing temperature. By themselves, these facts suggest small-polaronic hopping between inequivalent sites. The measured Hall mobilities are always low, but vary in sign. A possible explanation is offered for this anomalous behavior.

Graphite/poly(3,4-ethyenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanocomposites were prepared by an in-situ oxidative polymerization process. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the graphite/PEDOT nanocomposites with different content of graphite were measured in the temperature range from 300 K to 380 K. The results show that as the content of graphite increased from 0 to 37.2 wt %, the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites increased sharply from 3.6 S/cm to 80.1 S/cm, while the Seebeck coefficient kept almost the same value (in the range between 12.0 μV/K to 15.1 μV/K) at 300 K, which lead to an increased power factor. The Seebeck coefficient of the nanocomposites increased from 300 K to 380 K, while the electrical conductivity did not substantially depend on the measurement temperature. As a result, a power factor of 3.2 μWm−1 K−2 at 380 K was obtained for the nanocomposites with 37.2 wt % graphite.

Depending on the application of bismuth telluride thermoelectric materials in cooling, waste heat recovery, or wearable electronics, their material properties, and geometrical dimensions should be designed to optimize their performance. Recently, thermoelectric materials have gained a lot of interest in wearable electronic devices for body heat harvesting and cooling purposes. For efficient wearable electronic devices, thermoelectric materials with optimum properties, i.e., low thermal conductivity, high Seebeck coefficient, and high thermoelectric figure-of-merit (zT) at room temperature, are demanded. In this paper, we investigate the effect of glass inclusion, microwave processing, and annealing on the synthesis of high-performance p-type (BixSb1−x)2Te3 nanocomposites, optimized specially for body heat harvesting and body cooling applications. Our results show that glass inclusion could enhance the room temperature Seebeck coefficient by more than 10% while maintaining zT the same. Moreover, the combination of microwave radiation and post-annealing enables a 25% enhancement of zT at room temperature. A thermoelectric generator wristband, made of the developed materials, generates 300 μW power and 323 mV voltage when connected to the human body. Consequently, MW processing provides a new and effective way of synthesizing p-type (BixSb1−x)2Te3 alloys with optimum transport properties.
