Preserving rare grapes is not just a matter of variety. Recent dna research has shown that unusual and unknown grape varieties provide clues to wine history. During the centuries, 525 Georgian grape varieties had been known but most of them were degenerated. Nowadays, more than 437 rare Georgian vine varieties are preserved in the geo 038 collection of Agricultural Research-Scientific Center, established in 2014 under the Environment Protection and agriculture ministry. Study of the genetic pool of Georgian grape varieties determine the sustainability of the sector and enrichment of the modern wine market. For this reason the studies of the rare aboriginal grape varieties have begun by their ampelography, phenology, chemical, and oeno-caprological characterizes. The aim of this study is to investigate rare, Georgian, aboriginal wine-grapes by their ampelography, chemical and oenolo-caprological characterizes, and to offer different style and aroma wines to the market, enriching the modern wine assortment. The present study investigated firstly the rare Georgian aboriginal grape variety (Chvitiluri) by its characterizes. In this study grapes caprologycal indication, dynamic development of the sugar accumulation, TA and pH in berries, polyphenols extract in skin and seeds, and phenolic compounds were determined. The grape has been compared with Georgian and French wine-grapes and their products as well. The results show that the grape variety - Chvitiluri, and vinification technique (aging on lee) have the significant impact on the total phenol content in wine. White varietal wine contents high alcohol 13,2%, total phenols 733-500mg/l. Wine has specific, varietal characterizes color, taste, aroma. This study indicates that the rare local, aboriginal variety presents the perspective sort for wine production and can be returned in wine production.

В статье представлены результаты двухлетних исследований по изучению влияния внекорневых подкормок гуминовым препаратом нового поколения GSN-2004 HUMILIFEтм (ОСН-2004) на урожай и качество винограда столового сорта Мускат янтарный и технического сорта Каберне-Совиньон в условиях Южного берега Крыма. По результатам исследований 2017-2018 гг. установлено, что внекорневые подкормки изучаемым препаратом разработанной нормой 4 л/га, способствуют увеличению урожайности винограда сорта Мускат янтарный в среднем на 23,9%, при этом повышение урожайности составляет 2,7 т/га. Урожайность винограда сорта Каберне-Совиньон увеличивается на 26,5%, при этом повышение урожайности составляет 2,2 т/га. Подтверждено положительное влияние внекорневых подкормок на показатели качества винограда сорта Мускат янтарный, которое выразилось в увеличении средней массы грозди у изучаемого сорта на 40,3%, увеличении массовой концентрации сахаров в соке ягод на 5,4% и увеличении значений глюкоацидометрического показателя (ГАП) на 15,6%. Положительное влияние внекорневых подкормок на показатели качества винограда сорта Каберне-Совиньон выразилось в увеличении средней массы грозди на 23,0% и увеличении массовой концентрации сахаров в соке ягод на 7,1%.The paper summarizes findings of a two-year study on the impact of foliar fertilizing with a new generation humic preparation GSN-2004 HUMILIFEтм (ОСН-2004) on the harvest and quality of ‘Muscat Yantarniy’ table grapes and ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ wine grapes in the conditions of the southern coast of Crimea. The data of the 2017-2018 study established that foliar dressing with the preparation under study in the ratio of 4 l/ha increases the harvest of ‘Muscat Yantarniy’ grapes on average by 23.9%, or by 2 t/ha. The yield of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapes was increased by 26.5%, thus increasing the harvest by 2.2 t/ha. The positive impact of foliar dressing on quality indicators of ‘Muscat Yantarniy’ grapes was confirmed. Thus, the average cluster weight increased by 40.3%, total sugars in the berry juice increased by 5.4 %, and gluco-acidometric index increased by 158.06 %. The study confirmed the positive effect of foliar dressing on quality characteristics of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapes, as demonstrated by a 23% increase in the average cluster weight and a 7.1 % increase in the total sugars in the berry juice.

An urgent task of today for grape growers is to find effective ways to achieve the compliance of conditional parameters to phenolic ripeness of grapes while maintaining high cropping capacity. In this study the influence of foliar treatment of grapes with nitrogen-containing preparations "Siamino Pro 500" on productivity and phenolic maturity of ‘Cabernet-Sauvignon’ grape variety was investigated. Studies were carried out during 2018-2019. Grape maturity degree was assessed by the Glories method, based on the determining of the total and extractable anthocyanin potential of grapes. It was shown that, as a result of the experimental scheme of processing, the cropping capacity increased by 10- 14%, as well as the bunch weight - by 13 - 16%. Use of the preparation contributed to the onset of technical maturity of grapes at the earlier period compared to the control. The content of anthocyanins extracted from the skins was 49- 56%. Experimental grape samples were characterized by a higher content of titratable acids (by 1.4 and 1.2 g/l) and a lower sugar accumulation (by 9 and 16 g/l). Positive influence of the experimental scheme of processing on organoleptic properties of wines was observed.

Grapevine leafroll-associated virus-3 (GLRaV-3) is a major constraint on profitable grapevine cultivation. The virus is transmitted efficiently by mealybugs and soft scale insects, or through vegetative propagation by cuttings, and is present worldwide, wherever grapevines are grown. GLRaV-3 exists as a complex of genetic variants currently classified in several phylogenetic groups that can differ from each other by as much as 30% in nucleotide sequence of the whole genome. In the course of the GLRaV-3 testing of wine grapes in southern Idaho, plants of two grapevine cultivars were found to harbor a novel genetic variant of GLRaV-3, named ID45, which exhibited ≤80% nucleotide sequence identity level to the known GLRaV-3 isolates in its most conserved HSP70h gene. The ID45 variant caused no foliar symptoms in ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ in the fall, and was demonstrated to have poor reactivity to commercial virus-specific antibodies. The entire 18,478-nt genome sequence of the GLRaV-3-ID45 was determined using a combination of high-throughput and conventional Sanger sequencing, and demonstrated to have typical organization for the genus Ampelovirus (family Closteroviridae), with only 70 to 77% identity level to the GLRaV-3 genomes from other established phylogroups. We concluded that ID45 represented a new phylogenetic group IX of GLRaV-3. Database search using ID45 nucleotide sequence as a query suggested that this novel ID45 variant is present in at least one other grape-growing state in the U.S., California, and in Brazil. An RT-PCR based test was developed to distinguish ID45 from the predominant GLRaV-3 phylogroup I found in Idaho in single and mixed infections.

Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes can make magnificent wines but there are also many other excellent wine varieties that for many of us are rarely experienced. Vines for Wines will expand the wine lover’s knowledge and appreciation of a great range of wines and help to explore their individual preferences for specific varieties, blends, flavours and styles. This book is based on the highly successful Wine Grape Varieties, which is an aid to identifying grape vines. Vines for Wines, however, focuses on wines from the average consumer’s point-of-view, introducing the different wine grape varieties and the wines made from them, including blends. Each variety is represented by a colour photograph of the grape variety, its current world plantings, wine produced and notes describing the varietal characters for each wine grape variety. The tasting terms and wine notes for each variety provide a benchmark for the consumer to assess the quality of wines they drink, and to allow them to share and compare their experiences confidently with other wine lovers.

Effective abscission agents that decrease fruit detachment force (FDF) are sought by the California raisin industry to improve the continuous tray mechanical harvesting method. Such agents might also enable mechanical harvest of table and wine grapes (Vitis vinifera L.), but few agents are known to be effective for grape. Thus, methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and six other compounds known to stimulate abscission of other fruits were screened for their ability to reduce FDF of mature ‘Thompson Seedless’ grapes. Most compounds tested reduced FDF to some extent, but MeJA was particularly effective. Solutions containing between 45 and 4500 ppm MeJA reduced FDF by at least 50% to 85% compared with nontreated fruits. Application of 2250 and 4500 ppm MeJA to ‘Thompson Seedless’ vines caused 25% to 50% fruit drop, respectively, within 10 d after treatment (DAT). The efficacy of MeJA was verified in a second experiment in which solutions of 0, 1125, 2250, or 4500 ppm MeJA were applied to clusters of ‘Crimson Seedless’ grapes; at 14 DAT, FDF declined as a linear function of MeJA applied. The grapes did not abscise, but berries treated with 2250 to 4500 ppm MeJA had slightly lower soluble solids than nontreated fruits. Solutions of 0 or 4500 ppm MeJA applied to clusters of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ and ‘Merlot’ grapevines reduced FDF by 66% and 75%, respectively. Fruit drop was estimated to be less than 10%. Thus, a solution containing up to 4500 ppm MeJA may be an effective abscission agent to facilitate mechanical harvest of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ or ‘Merlot’.

The article presents the results of studies, carried out in 2018-2020 in soil and climatic conditions of viticultural zone of the South Coast of Crimea on wine grape variety ‘Cabernet-Sauvignon’. It was established that double application of national chelated micronutrient fertilizers Tiaton and Chelaton Extra for foliar dressing of grapes contributed to an increase in the average bunch weight by 9.3-15.3 g (10.3-16.9%), shoot productivity by 10.4-17.1% and cropping power by 0.6-1 t/ha (10-16.7%) in comparison with the control. It was experimentally determined that test treatments with Chelaton Extra preparation led to a significant increase in the average length of annual shoots by 13.3 cm (9.3%) and a gain in the green matter of bushes by 265.9 cm3 (12%). Using of the studied micronutrient fertilizers against the background of increased grape productivity positively influenced the process of sugar accumulation and ensured the value component at the control level. The studies have proven that double treatment with Chelaton Extra fertilizer contributed to an increase in the mass concentration of phenolic substances in wine by 10.7%.

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Aims: </strong>To study the influence of the grape variety (Syrah, Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon) on the extraction kinetics of phenolic compounds (proanthocyanidins (PAs) and anthocyanins) during a skin maceration period of 20 days.<strong></strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Methods and results: </strong>Anthocyanins and PAs were analyzed by HPLC in three wine varieties during maceration time (20 days). The results showed that anthocyanin extraction followed the same kinetics for the three varieties. In the case of PAs, Syrah must-wine showed the highest concentration of these compounds, which were seen to be mainly skin-derived. Monastrell must-wine presented the lowest concentration of total PAs and the lowest percentage of skin-derived PAs. Cabernet Sauvignon must-wine obtained intermediate values for total PAs, although these compounds were more polymerized.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Grape variety and extractability play a very important role in the wine PA profile. Thus, the highest values of total PAs were observed in the wines of Cabernet Sauvignon and especially Syrah.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Significant and impact of the study: </strong>Knowledge of the kinetics of each variety during the maceration step may help manage the composition of wines in light of consumer preference.</p>
