At the conclusion of the TRC, Desmond Tutu stated that the Commission’s task was to promote, not to achieve, reconci- liation. Reconciliation, he maintained, is the responsibility of all South Africans, and expressed the hope that the Christian churches would be in the forefront of this healing process.  This article explores how the Christian church can be in the forefront of binding up the wounds, facilitating the healing pro- cess, and living as a people and a sign of hope. The answers it seeks to offer fall under three interrelated themes, namely the church’s:  • spirituality of reconciliation; • ministry and mission of reconciliation; and • resources for its ministry and mission of reconciliation. Cultivating a spirituality of reconciliation would mean making reconciliation a lifestyle, rather than a series of strategies, pro- grammes or initiatives, yet remaining concrete, practical, mea- surable and accountable.   The church’s mission is primarily to proclaim the good news of God’s Kingdom that is already here, but not yet fully here and therefore still to come. This proclamation is the message of reconciliation between God, others and the self, and anticipates the unity of all creation in Jesus Christ.   The resources given to the church to fulfil this apostolic ministry include prophecy, evangelism, pastoral care and teaching, as well as its liturgical and sacramental life, its ministry of pre- sence, its people and its commitment to social justice.

Photosynthesis involves capturing light energy and, most often, converting it to chemical energy stored as reduced carbon. It is the source of food, fuel, and fiber and there is a resurgent interest in basic research on photosynthesis. Plants make excellent use of visible light energy; leaves are ideally suited to optimize light use by having a large area per amount of material invested and also having leaf angles to optimize light utilization. It is thought that plants do not use green light but in fact they use green light better than blue light under some conditions. Leaves also have mechanisms to protect against excess light and how these work in a stochastic light environment is currently a very active area of current research. The speed at which photosynthesis can begin when leaves are first exposed to light and the speed of induction of protective mechanisms, as well as the speed at which protective mechanisms dissipate when light levels decline, have recently been explored. Research is also focused on reducing wasteful processes such as photorespiration, when oxygen instead of carbon dioxide is used. Some success has been reported in altering the path of carbon in photorespiration but on closer inspection there appears to be unforeseen effects contributing to the good news. The stoichiometry of interaction of light reactions with carbon metabolism is rigid and the time constants vary tremendously presenting large challenges to regulatory mechanisms. Regulatory mechanisms will be the topic of photosynthesis research for some time to come.

This article aims to show that the Old Testament concept of the year of jubilee is neither an anachronistic, nor a peripheral de- tail of Scripture. It is an integral part of it and indeed one her- meneutical tool for interpreting and applying it to social and mo- ral transformation in South Africa.  Israel, liberated from slavery and returning to God, became a paradigm for the liberated slave to return to his inheritance in the year of jubilee celebrated every 50th year. Its underlying concerns are: justice, freedom, human dignity and rights.  Jesus clearly understood his mission in terms of the proclama- tion of “the year of the Lord’s favour” (Luke 4:14-21), and de- monstrated this by preaching good news to the poor, freeing the prisoners, restoring sight to the blind, and releasing the op- pressed. He linked the mission of his followers with his own and with the promise and gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost, seen as fulfilment and announcement of God’s promise, demonstrates that the kingdom of God is already here and still to come.   The Book of Revelation gathers together this scriptural theme and presents the jubilee as good news for now and the future. Indeed, God’s future is presented as the ultimate jubilee. Although these institutions cannot be imposed on a secular democracy, there are implications here for holistic evangelism and mission as well as for social and moral transformation in South Africa.   These implications, it is argued, should include a reference to the ‘missio Dei’ as Jesus expressed it: holistic evangelism; a commitment to the values and practices of restorative justice; restoration, healing and hope; economic justice and land re- form; ecological responsibility; and moral restoration.

Another reissue of Decca's long series of recordings made at the abbey of Solesmes is good news. Accord is a French reissue label of the Universal group (formerly PolyGram) that earlier had reissued about a dozen CDs that matched each original LP in content. The first five reissues were listed in A Gregorian Chant Discography, and five more were reported here in 1994 (nos. 19 to 23). Now, duplicating the contents of at least seven of those earlier discs, a new programme has begun with the cooperation of the monks of Solesmes to arrange the chants according to the liturgical year. Titles have been brought up to date, such as ‘Sixth Sunday of Easter’ and ‘chant d’entrée'. New digital transfers made from the original tapes provide superb sound. The first twelve discs have appeared in eight packages (two or three discs in some cases), and we can expect as many as another dozen discs to come.

Kejatuhan manusia kedalam dosa telah membuat manusia kehilangan kemuliaan Allah. Manusia bukan saja harus menerima hukuman Allah secara rohani sebagai mahluk yang diciptakan dengan Kemuliaan Allah, namun secara fisik dan social mereka menerima ganjaran hukuman dari Allah. Kehidupan secara fisik berubah, dimana mereka kemudian menyadari bahwa dirinya dalam keadaan telanjang dan merasakan malu. Secara social mereka mengalami putusnya hubungan dengan Allah dan lingkungannya kemudian menjadi takut dan menyembunyikan diri dari hadapan Allah. Manusia kemudian menerima hukuman dari Allah yang berdampak secara rohani, dan juga jasmani. Mereka dibuang dari tempat kemuliaan kedalam dunia yang penuh dengan penderitaan sebagai akibat dari perbuatan dosa tersebut. Allah kemudian menunjukkan Kasih-Nya, dengan mencari manusia yang telah jatuh dalam dosa mengadakan pemulihan, akan tetapi tetap menegakkan keadilan dengan menjatuhkan hukuman-Nya dan mengadakan perjanjian akan Keselamatan bagi manusia berdosa. Rancangan keselamtan dari Allah inilah yang kemudian dilaksankan dengan Misio-Dei, dimana Allah mengutus Anak-Nya Yesus Kristus datang kedunia ini, para Nabi dan Rasul, kemudian Misio Eklesiae, dimana Allah menempatkan Gereja-Nya dan mengutus orang-orang percaya untuk memberitakan Injil Keselamatan. Injil Keselamatan itu adalah “Kabar Baik” dimana didalamnya ada berita tentang kelepasan manusia dari hukuman dosa. Dosa telah membuat manusia mengalami berbagai penderitaan, baik rohani, Jasmani juga hubungan berdampak pada lingkungan social. Pemulihan tidak hanya cukup pada tataran Rohani saja, karena dosa adalah permasalahan yang kompleksitas dan menyeluruh dalam kehidupan manusia didunia ini. Pelayanan “Holistik” adalah upaya untuk memulihkan keberadaan manusia seutuhnya, baik secara spiritual dimana manusia diperdamaikan dengan Allah tetapi juga secara mental dimana   manusia dibangkitkan kembali semangatnya untuk memperjuangkan kehidupannya didunia ini. Dengan demikian Injil bukan saja menyelesaikan perkara-perkara rohani saja, akan tetapi juga berdampak pada kehidupan social masyarakat, karena itulah tugas Gereja untuk melakukan tiga hal penting dalam dunia ini:   Marturia, Koinonia, dan Diakonia. Inilah merupakan bagian dari pelayanan yang bersifat “Holistik”                   Man's fall into sin has made man lose the glory of God. Humans must not only receive God's punishment spiritually as a creature created with the Glory of God, but physically and socially they receive punishment from God. Life physically changes, where they then realize that they are naked and feel ashamed. Socially, they experience a break with God and their environment and become afraid and hide themselves from God. Humans then receive punishment from God that impacts spiritually, and also physically. They are banished from the place of glory in a world full of suffering as a result of these sins. God then shows His love, by searching for people who have fallen into sin to make restoration, but still uphold justice by dropping His punishment and entering into a covenant of Salvation for sinful humans. This salvation design from God was then carried out by Misio-Dei, where God sent His Son Jesus Christ to come into this world, the Prophets and Apostles, then Misio Eklesiae, where God placed His Church and sent believers to preach the Gospel of Salvation. The Gospel of Salvation is the "Good News" in which there is news about human deliverance from the penalty of sin. Sin has caused people to experience various sufferings, both spiritual, physical and also the relationship has an impact on the social environment. Restoration is not only enough at the Spiritual level, because sin is a complex and comprehensive problem in human life in this world. "Holistic" service is an effort to restore the whole human existence, both spiritually where humans are reconciled with God but also mentally where humans are reawakened to fight for their lives in this world. Thus the Gospel not only resolves spiritual matters, but also has an impact on the social life of the community, because that is the Church's duty to do three important things in this world: Marturia, Koinonia, and Diakonia. This is part of the service that is "Holistic".

The author reflects on the boredom that strikes doctors and surgical staff stationed at the field hospital. In principle, boredom should have been good news—after all, no one was getting hurt—except that it left the doctors with nothing meaningful to do. And so they found themselves pining for work to come in, even if this invariably came at the expense of someone else getting hurt. Boredom can also drive doctors to criticize each other's handling of patients and treatment and discharge decisions. The military is no stranger to boredom, not even on deployment to some of the most volatile, conflict-ridden regions in the world such as Afghanistan. According to the author, the surgical staff at Camp Bastion's hospital, with idle time on their hands, became introspective.

The good news is that the Queen Mother, at the age of 95, has undergone a successful hip replacement operation. The great lady is indeed a phenomenon of vitality. We can only wish that it will continue for many years to come, for she is, and recent events have proved it, an example of a monarchy which is popular without being populist. She is adored by the crowds, but she has never gone and never goes beyond the limits of her position. Incidentally, it was learnt recently that she has not given an interview to the Press since 1923. This is, to my mind, a sign of monarchical discretion. The populist style of monarchy, on the contrary, affects great familiarity with the media and finds itself, afterwards, the worse for it. But the Queen Mother is not only needed as a symbol of pure monarchy. Her presence is still very badly needed by the Queen who does need now as much help as she can get.

Neapolis, modern Kavala, still shows clearly why it was an obvious place for a port in ancient Greece. Nestled snugly about a half-moon bay, the city looks down upon a natural harbor that became the principal location in northern Macedonia for travel to and from Asia Minor. Kavala is the site of ancient Neapolis, the principal port of Philippi. Founded in the 7th century B.C.E. as a colony of Thasos, it was significant both for its port and for its commanding location along the coastal route from Thessalonica to Asia Minor. The fleet of Brutus was stationed at Neapolis at the time of the battle of Philippi. The Apostle Paul first set foot in Europe at Neapolis on his first missionary voyage. In later centuries the town was renamed Christoupolis, and it was burned by the Normans on their way to Constantinople in 1185. The city was under Ottoman rule until 1912, and on three separate occasions it has been under Bulgarian occupation, including more than two years during World War II. Virtually nothing remains of the ancient city. The impressive aqueduct on the hills above the city dates from the 16th century, when it was built by Sulëyman the Magnificent. In 1769 Mehmet Ali, pasha of Egypt, was born in Kavala. In Troas Paul had a vision in which he saw a man of Macedonia asking him to come to his country: “During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them” (Acts 16:9–10). The rapid expansion of Christianity to the west largely was due to Paul’s decision to follow the prompting of this vision. This biblical statement is significant also because it is the first use of the first-person plural, we, in the Acts narrative, possibly indicating that the writer of Acts, traditionally regarded as Luke, now accompanies Paul on this portion of his travels.
