Inorganic UV filters, as titanium dioxide (TiO2), have become attractive because of their role in protecting the skin against the damage caused by the continuous exposure to the sun. However, their high refractive index, responsible for a white residue when applied on the skin, has led to the development of alternative inorganic materials, such as TiO2nanoparticles. Thus, the aim of this study was the development of transparent and stable gel formulations containing surface modified TiO2nanoparticles for application in sunscreens. Also, the physical and chemical properties of formulations containing TiO2nanoparticles were evaluated. The UV absorption spectroscopy analyses indicated that the formulations containing TiO2nanoparticles had a broad protection spectrum. The diffuse reflectance spectroscopy revealed that the use of PTSH surface modified TiO2nanoparticles improved the transparency of the sunscreen formulations compared to that containing commercial ones. The rheology analyses showed that the amount of nanoparticles incorporated in the formulations influences the gel-like or liquid-like behavior. The results showed that the surface modified TiO2nanoparticles are a promising innovative UV filter and the formulations containing these nanoparticles are interesting candidates for being used as sunscreen.

The photopolymerization of aromatic methacrylate in organic-inorganic nanocomposite films for holographic recording media was investigated. Thick photopolymer films (thickness>200 µm) were prepared using organic-inorganic hybrid solutions containing high refractive index monomers, through the sol-gel process. These photopolymer films were polymerized upon exposure to a visible light with high photo conversions. The photopolymerization was highly effective under visible light irradiation and could be applied to a holographic medium with high diffraction efficiency (>95 %) by using a 532nm laser. The diffraction efficiency of the film was much affected by morphology, which might affect monomer diffusion during the recording.

AbstractIn order to develop an alternative buffer layer architecture using the sol-gel process to produce YBCO (YBa2Cu3O7-δ) coated conductors, Yb2O3 has been chosen as the candidate material. Buffer layers of Yb2O3 were epitaxially grown on biaxially textured-Ni (100) substrates by the sol gel process for the first time. The Yb2O3 precursor solution was prepared from an alkoxide sol-gel route in 2-methoxyethanol and was deposited on textured-Ni (100) substrates by either spin coating or dip coating methods. The amorphous film was then processed at 1160°C under flowing (96%)Ar/H2(4%) gas mixture for one hour. The Yb2O3 film exhibited a strong c-axis orientation on the Ni (100) substrates. The phi and omega scans indicated good in plane and out of plane orientations. The X-ray (222) pole figure showed a cube-on-cube epitaxy. High current YBCO films were grown on the Yb2O3 sol-gel buffered-Ni substrates.

AbstractIn this study, we designed a two-layer hybrid Anti-Reflection/Anti-Static (AR/AS) thin film. Two kinds of UV-curable fluorinated compounds were synthesized as low refractive index materials, and a TiO2 sol combined with a conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) was made by the sol-gel process for use as a high refractive index material as well as a conducting layer. In order to determine the most optimized AR/AS system, the spectral properties were simulated with the refractive index of each layer. According to the simulated results, a high refractive index layer was deposited on the hard coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate by the spin coating technique, and a low refractive index layer was spin coated on the low refractive index layer. The reflectance and transmittance were measured by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. It was found that the measured reflectance and the maximum transmittance of the AR/AS film were 0.71 %R at a wavelength of 550 nm and 93 %T in the wavelength range between 400 and 700 nm, respectively. The surface resistance of the AR/AS film was 108.6 ohms.

ABSTRACTYttrium is involved as oxide in a variety of advanced materials. Hydrolysis of its most common alkoxide, yttrium oxoisopropoxide Y5O(OiPr)13 , is difficult to control as a result of the high electropositivity of the metal. Functional alcohols such as 2-methoxyethanol and acetylacetone have thus been used as modifiers. These tailored precursors have been fully characterized (single crystal X-Ray diffraction, IR, NMR. ). The tendency of methoxyethanol to act as a bridging ligand and to stabilize high oligomers - Y(OC2H4OMe)3 is a decamer - gives some insight into its behavior as “network builder”. The unexpected cleavage of acetylacetone offers a route to an interesting acetatoacetylacetonate derivative, Y2(OAc)2(acac)4(H2O)2 , but also suggest that this classical “modifier” could be affected by the hydrolysis-polycondensation reactions of the metallic species during the sol-gel process. Comparison of the hydrolysis behavior of the different precursors was performed.
