The copper content of various organs of ‘brindled’ female heterozygotes and male mice affected by this X-linked mutation are documented at the last day of intrauterine development, at 1 day after birth and at 11 days of age. The findings indicate defective placental transfer of copper in utero, and an even more marked defect in intestinal absorption of copper after birth. In addition there is an abnormal distribution of copper among the tissues of the body once it is absorbed. The mutation produces abnormal accumulation of copper in kidney, in gut mucosa and in testis, whereas liver, brain, plasma and most other organs show diminished copper concentrations. The intestinal malabsorption of copper is accompanied by accumulation of abnormal amounts of the metal in the intestinal-mucosa cells. Copper concentrations in both mucosa and luminal contents rise progressively from duodenum to ileum. Defective upper-intestinal absorption, consequent progressive increase in luminal copper concentration and pinocytosis in the ileum would seem to explain the findings. Radioisotopic studies eliminated the possibility of excessive excretion of copper in bile or across the intestinal mucosa. Detailed comparison with findings in humans with Menkes' syndrome is difficult because of the different stages of development at which the studies have been performed, but the results seem in general to conform very satisfactorily. Those differences seen are probably explicable by known species differences. All the findings are in accord with a hypothesis that the basic defect involves accumulation and retention of copper in the cells of affected tissues such as kidney, gut mucosa and placenta.

Decreased placental transfer of 64Cu into both Mobr/Y and Mobr/+ foetuses was apparent after its administration to pregnant Mobr/+ mice. The severity of impairment and the degree of retention and accumulation of 64Cu in the placenta was not as great as has been previously observed in the gut of the suckling Mobr/Y mice.

Innate immunity prevents pathogens from entering and spreading within the body. This function is especially important in the gastrointestinal tract and skin, as these organs have a large surface contact area with the outside environment. In the intestine, luminal commensal bacteria are necessary for adequate food digestion and play a crucial role in tolerance to benign antigens. Immune system damage can create an intestinal inflammatory response, leading to chronic disease including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an IBD of unknown etiology with increasing worldwide prevalence. In the intestinal mucosa of UC patients, there is an imbalance in the IL-33/ST2 axis, an important modulator of the innate immune response. This paper reviews the role of the IL-33/ST2 system in innate immunity of the intestinal mucosa and its importance in inflammatory bowel diseases, especially ulcerative colitis.

Wilson disease (hepatolenticular degeneration) is an autosomal recessive, inherited disorder of copper metabolism resulting in excessive accumulation of copper in the liver, brain, and other organs of the body. The manifestations of the disease are related directly to this accumulation of copper. Copper homeostasis normally is a product of the balance between intestinal absorption of dietary copper and hepatic biliary excretion of excess copper. In Wilson disease, incorporation of hepatic copper into ceruloplasmin is defective and excretion of copper in the bile is reduced. A low level of ceruloplasmin, which until a few years ago was erroneously considered to be the basis for the disease, is a consequence of the underlying metabolic defect.

In his preceding memoirs, the author has shown that two very dissimilar types of structure present themselves among Foraminifera, one characterized by its simplicity, the other by its complexity. In the former, of which Orbitolites, Orbiculina and Alveolina are typical examples, the calcareous skeleton does not present any definite indications of organization, but seems to have been formed by the simple calcification of a portion of the homogeneous sarcode-body of the animal; that sarcode-body is but very imperfectly divided into segments, the communications between the cavities occupied by these segments being very free and irregular; the form of the segments themselves, and the mode of their connexion, are alike inconstant; and even the plan of growth, on which the character of the organism as a whole depends, though preserving a general uniformity, is by no means invariably maintained. In the latter, to which Cycloclypeus and Heterostegina belong, the calcareous skeleton is found to present a very definite and elaborate organization. The several segments of the body are so completely separated from each other, that they remain connected only by delicate threads of sarcode. Each segment thus isolated has its own proper calcareous envelope, which seems to be moulded (as it were) upon it; and this envelope or shell is perforated with minute parallel tubuli closely resembling those of dentine, except in the absence of bifurcation; the partition-walls between adjacent segments are consequently double, and are strengthened by an intermediate calcareous deposit, which is traversed by a system of inosculating passages that seems properly to belong to it. The form of the segments, their mode of communication, and consequently the general plan of growth, have a very considerable degree of constancy; and altogether the tendency is strongly manifested in this type to the greater individualization of the parts of the composite body, which in the preceding must be looked upon rather as constituting one aggregate whole. In the present memoir this contrast is fully carried out by a detailed comparison of two characteristic examples from these types respectively, each of them having its own features of peculiar interest.

AbstractA large number of well-preserved chancelloriid scleritomes from the Guanshan biota, early Cambrian of Yunnan, China, are described as a new species,Allonnia tenuisn. sp., and provide solid evidence for the original appearance of these enigmatic animals, based on specimens compacted laterally and top-down. With the assistance of a flexible integument, chancelloriids, especiallyAllonniafrom early and middle Cambrian, may have had the ability to partially or completely expand and contract the body, which might have played an important role in feeding. A new metazoan with single-element spines,Nidelric gaoloufangensisn. sp., is also described. Preservation and affinity are discussed. Detailed comparison of the morphology of the body and spines of this metazoan indicate that it shares many similarities with chancelloriids, of which it may be an unusual form.UUID:http://zoobank.org/2708d95a-1fae-46fc-afea-9707ae97a4d7

В XI в. In the XI century a monk of the Studite monastery St. Nicetas Stethatus in the ascetic-theological corpus of his writings repeatedly used the expressions “main virtues” and “main passions”. The article attempts to uncover the meaning of the expression “main virtues”, to systematize the author’s ideas about the four main virtues, known to him from the ancient tradition through Christian authors, who continued to use this expression freely. The general context makes it possible to reveal the originality of the author, who compares the “four main virtues” with the fourfold part of the human soul as a great world compared to the external, small, world, which, according to ancient concepts, consisted of four primary elements. Particularly, an even more detailed comparison of the four virtues with the four abilities of the higher part of the soul, the mind, is considered. Along with this, the A. compares the five senses of the body and the five rational powers of the soul. For St. Nicetas the four main virtues are fundamental, which does not exclude the A.’s special attention to a number of other key virtues, such as humility and love. The doctrine of the four main virtues is missing from the corpus of St. Nicetas/St. Simeon the New Theologian, which more strongly emphasizes the more “school-like” and compilative nature of St. Stethatus’ heritage. The doctrines of Stethatus are considered in the context of ancient Byzantine literature.

The number of obese pregnant women increases annually and reaches 20-30%. The metabolism of hormones and minerals changes in the presence of a large amount of adipose tissue in the body of a pregnant woman, which leads to a number of obstetric and perinatal problems. The aim of the work is to study and compare the influence of the gestational process on the indicators of iron and copper metabolism in the blood serum of women with normal body weight and women with obesity. In the blood serum of 125 women of reproductive age, the content of hemoglobin, iron, transferrin, ferritin, copper and ceruloplasmin was determined. The influence of pregnancy on the indicators of iron and copper metabolism in the blood serum of women was revealed. Pregnancy in women with normal body weight increases the content of transferrin and ceruloplasmin. Correlation of ceruloplasmin and ferritin content with body mass index of obese pregnant women was revealed. In pregnancy with concomitant obesity, hyperferritinemia is formed with a reduced content of hemoglobin and serum iron. Knowledge of the indicators of iron and copper metabolism is necessary to optimize the observation of pregnant women, effective prevention and prediction of obstetric and perinatal complications.

Fasted adult male rats were used to study the effect of dietary proteins on intestinal alkaline phosphatase. Groups of animals were offered one of several proteins; lactalbumin, egg albumin, zein, gelatin, wheat gluten, casein, and vitellin. Control animals had cellulose fed to them. The rats were sacrificed six hours after they were given the different diets. Alkaline phosphatase determinations with intestinal homogenates indicated that the two phosphoproteins, casein and vitellin, elevated levels of the enzyme significantly above fasting levels. Possible interpretations of these findings are discussed.

Copper therapy was applied to brindled mouse mutants, which suffer from lethal hypocupraemia, by using cuprous and cupric solutions. The method of treatment was a single subcutaneous injection of 50 microgram of copper at 7 days of age. Early effects of the dose were: prevention of the tremors and spasms seen in untreated mutants, raising to normal and near-normal of caeruloplasmin oxidase and lysyl oxidase activities and pigmentation of skin and fur. Growth of mutants was retarded up to 23 days of age, but thereafter they rapidly gained weight to be nearly normal by 60 days of age. At 3 days after injection, copper concentrations in previously deficient mutant organs apart from liver were at least as much as those of treated normals, which had remained unchanged. Copper in mutant livers had increased only slightly in comparison with the normal control. A state of copper deficiency recurred in mutant tissues by 25 days after injection. A solution of Cu+, retained as such by an alkyl polyether, and sebacic acid resulted in greater growth rates after 23 days than did three other copper treatments. Cu+ may have resulted in an improved growth response owing to it being more readily metabolized than C12+. Delayed release of copper from the site of injection may have played an important role.

Since the introduction of hemodialysis procedure several attempts have been made to elucidate the material tissue interaction in order to evaluate the behaviour of immunosystem cellular and humoral responses to the material of patients on renal replacement therapy. Biochemical and sierological parameters have been considered as method for assessment of the best compatible dialysis. Nevertheless blood tests don't probably reflect the most important symptoms of clinical relevance. Thus we have applied bioelectrical impedance to assess the whole procedure/patient system. Resistance (R) changes during hemodialysis resulted strictly inversely correlated to the body weight variations during HD session (R < 0.96). Reactance (Xc) has also shown a progressive increase associated with an increment of phase angle, while Xc during clinical events such as hypotension, vomiting or cramps showed some transient falls. Also nutritional status and clinical well-being manifested a close relationship with bioelectrical parameters. It is therefore our feeling that BIA monitoring will provide a feasible tool to assess dialysis adequacy, of which biocompatibility represent a crucial aspect.
