1. The effects of food intake and the fatty acid composition of the diet on the hepatic stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity of obese-hyperglycaemic (ob/ob) mice were investigated. 2. Obese mice fed on a commercial mouse diet, ad libitum, had 6.5-fold more activity per liver cell than had lean mice. 3. On a diet containing 14% corn oil the activity was 65% less in obese mice and 62% less in lean mice compared with animals fed on the commercial diet. 4. Feeding with 14% saturated fat in the diet doubled the activity in lean mice compared with those on the commercial diet, but had no effect on the activity in obese mice. 5. Obese mice fed on the corn-oil diet contained a higher proportion of linoleic acid in the liver lipids than did lean mice fed on the commercial diet, but the acyl-CoA desaturase activity was 125% higher than in the lean mice. 6. Limiting the food intake of obese mice by pair-feeding with lean mice decreased their acyl-CoA desaturase activity when the animals were fed on the saturated-fat diet, but the activity remained 75% higher than in lean mice, whereas in obese mice pair-fed on the corn-oil diet the activity was the same as in lean mice. 7. During starvation the acyl-CoA desaturase activity in livers from obese mice decreased more slowly and proportionately less than in livers from lean mice. 8. It is concluded that increased substrate supply as a result of hyperphagia and not low concentration of linoleic acid is the main factor causing high acyl-CoA desaturase activity in obese mice.

Calves were fed from 5 to 85 days of age a synthetic milk that contained either 10% corn oil (ca. 50% linoleic acid) or 10% methyl myristate. The fatty acid composition of almost all tissues studied was altered to some extent by the change in dietary fatty acids. In the central nervous system, the medulla and spinal cord were resistant, but the peripheral nervous system (sympathetic trunk, brachial plexus, and vagus nerve) profoundly reflected alteration in dietary fatty acids. In peripheral nervous tissue from calves fed corn oil the proportion of linoleic acid increased from 2 to 5% to 25 to 30%. Similarly, in such tissues, myristic acid increased from 2 to 6% to 16 to 43% in methyl myristate-fed calves. Even the fatty acid composition of endocrine glands (pituitary, adrenal, and testis) reflected dietary fatty acids. The fatty acid composition of the skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, and aorta changed with different dietary fats. The greatest change occurred in the cardiac muscle and liver, in which the proportion of linoleic acid increased in the corn oil-fed calves to 50% of the total fatty acids.

The results of long-term studies of the biological, morphological and phenological features of the introduced new culture of safflower in the Central, Volga and North Caucasus regions are presented. Optimum parameters of depth of seeding (5-6 cm), seeding rates (300-350 thousand pieces/hectare or 12-14 kg), ensuring high productivity, oil content and quality of seeds are established. For the first time, the relationship between moisture availability of vegetation periods with accumulation of oil content and a change in the fatty acid composition was established. Oilseed (in untreated seeds) in the regions was from 14,5 to 31,2%, in excessively wet 2013 – 6,4% in the Moscow region and 8,6% in the Saratov region. Fatty acid composition revealed a high content of oleic acid in Krasa Stupinskaya variety – 13,6-16,8%, linoleic acid – 68,5-75,7%. The yield of oil in the Moscow region was 240 kg/ha. The yield of Krasa Stupinskaya in the Moscow Region was 0,6 t/ha, the Rostov Region 0,8 t/ha and Saratov Region 1,2 t/ha, with an average weight of 1000 seeds, respectively, by regions: 40,0 g, 47,3 g and 40,9 g. The growing season for growing seeds was 105 days in the Moscow Region, 94 days in the Rostov Region and 95 days in the Saratov Region. It has been established that excessive moistening during the flowering and seed filling period increases the harmfulness of enzyme-mycosis seed depletion (EMIS) – biological injury during maturation (enzymatic stage), followed by the seeding of the seeds with the phytopathogen Alternaria carthami Chowdhury. In the breeding programs for productivity and oil content, it is recommended to use the varieties Moldir (Kazakhstan) and Krasa Stupinskaya (FGBNU VSTISP), the fatty acid composition of which is characterized by an increased content of oleic and linoleic acid, which is of particular value for storage and use for food purposes.
