Abstract Instructing individuals with aphasia in the usage of AAC strategies and devices is a challenging endeavor. Not only does this population present with a wide range of linguistic impairments, but many individuals also demonstrate cognitive deficits, which may adversely affect communication. This paper will summarize the wide variety of cognitive deficits demonstrated by individuals with aphasia, specifically attention, memory and executive functioning problems. In addition, we will review the impact of these cognitive impairments on communicative competence. Finally, we will discuss an intervention, the Multimodality Communication Training Program (MCTP), designed to address the cognitive impairments that influence AAC intervention.

This research was carried out with the aim of examining the impact of communication training based on ‘from the child to mother approach’ on the communication of the mothers with their children attending mobile preschools. The sample comprised 80 children attending mobile preschool and mothers of those children. Two of the five neighborhoods served by the mobile preschool were designated randomly as experiment groups and the remaining as control groups. There were 33 children and mothers in the experimental group and 47 in the control group. The data was collected by General Information Form and Parent-Child Communication Evaluation Tool. During the course of the research, the Communication Training Program prepared by the researcher and based on the Child to Mother Approach was applied to the experimental group for two days in a week during eight weeks. In order to examine the impact of Communication Training Program on mother-child communication, t-test was conducted for both the independent group and the dependent group. Statistical significance was set at .05. As a result of the analyses, it has been determined that the Communication Training Program has a positive effect on communication between mothers and children and this effect is permanent. In line with the results of the research, suggestions for preschool education teachers, parents and researchers are presented.

Recent studies indicate that COVID-19 infection can lead to serious neurological consequences in a small percentage of individuals. However, in the months following acute illness, many more suffer from fatigue, low motivation, disturbed mood, poor sleep and cognitive symptoms, colloquially referred to as 'brain fog'. But what about individuals who do not report any ongoing symptoms after recovering from COVID-19? Here we examined a wide range of cognitive functions critical for daily life (including sustained attention, memory, motor control, planning, semantic reasoning, mental rotation and spatial-visual attention) in people who had previously suffered from COVID-19 but were not significantly different from a control group on self-reported fatigue, forgetfulness, sleep abnormality, motivation, depression, anxiety and personality profile. COVID-19 survivors displayed significantly worse episodic memory (up to 6 months post infection) and greater decline in vigilance and motivation with time on task (for up to 9 months). Overall, the results show that chronic cognitive impairments following COVID-19 are evident on objective testing even amongst those who do not report a greater symptom burden. Importantly, in the sample tested here, these were not significantly different from normal after six-nine months, demonstrating evidence of recovery over time.

This paper presents literature review on cognitive impairments in patients with CM1, data on which began to be formed in the recent years. Data on the predominant deficit in the structure of executive functioning in patients with CM1 are presented. The genesis of cognitive deficits in patients with CM1 is most often considered in the context of cerebellar dysfunction and damage to the connections of the cerebellum with the prefrontal cortex, which leads to dysmetria of thinking and emotions. Data from other studies are presented that consider the role of additional factors of cognitive dysfunction in CM1, such as pain and emotional disorders.

Children in care, who have been maltreated, consistently demonstrate poorer educational outcomes than their peers. A number of reasons have been suggested for this such as a lack of stability and opportunities, as compared to their peers. One possible contributor to the poorer educational attainment of children in care is their underlying cognitive vulnerabilities. Cognitive deficits in maltreated children are thought to arise as a result of the impact of trauma on the developing brain. These cognitive deficits include difficulties with executive functioning. Executive functioning abilities include the ability to inhibit behaviour, plan ahead and switch from task to task and are critical for navigating the day to day requirements of educational settings. This article summarises what we know about the cognitive vulnerabilities of maltreated children in care and outlines the implications of these cognitive deficits for supporting maltreated children.

Mobile stage construction is a huge challenge for designers due to a very wide range of variable factors influencing it, such as wind or temperature, the value of which in this case depends on the geographical location. An inherent element of the impact of these factors are the accompanying different, both constant and variable loads. Detailed identification of these loads is as important as the analysis of the dynamic properties of the structure. The more so as the analyzed structure appears in two configurations, first as a semitrailer, and then as a stage.

AbstractPeople with mental illness and traumatic brain injury experience difficulties in gaining and maintaining employment and have a higher unemployment rate because of their symptoms and poor social skills including cognitive impairments. Cognitive remediation is an intervention developed to improve cognitive functioning such as attention, memory, and problem-solving, by providing them with specific designed cognitive exercises. After practicing those cognitive tasks repetitively and massively, people with cognitive deficits will improve cognitive processes which lead to better cognitive performance. There is evidence supporting the benefits of cognitive remediation in improving employment-related outcome. Thus, it might have a role for job seekers with neuropsychiatric disorders and cognitive dysfunctions.

The paper provides a narrative review of cognitive deficits in patients with gambling disorder. We discuss several types of these deficits, namely, cognitive impairments due to deficits in executive functioning, impulsive and risky decision-making, gambling-related cognitive distortions, and cognitive errors in cognitive-behavioral terms. These deficits are reviewed from the perspective of their relevance for psychotherapy and the development of differentiated psychotherapeutic interventions for gambling disorder treatment.

Abstract Background Patients with the metabolic disorder classical galactosemia suffer from long-term complications despite a galactose-restricted diet, including a below average intelligence level. The aim of the current review was to investigate the incidence and profile of cognitive impairments in patients with classical galactosemia. Method MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsychINFO were searched up to 23 October 2018 for studies examining information processing speed, attention, memory, language, visuospatial functioning, executive functioning and social cognition in patients with confirmed classical galactosemia utilizing standardized neuropsychological tests. Data synthesis followed a narrative approach, since the planned meta-analysis was not possible due to large variability between the neuropsychological assessments. Results Eleven studies were included, including case-studies. The quality of most studies was moderate to low. As a group, patients with classical galactosemia exhibit below average to low scores on all cognitive domains. A large proportion of the patients perform on an impaired level on attention, memory and vocabulary. Evidence for impairments in information processing speed, language, visuospatial functioning and aspects of executive functioning was limited due to the small number of studies investigating these cognitive functions. Social cognition was not examined at all. Conclusions Given the moderate to low quality of the included studies and the limited evidence in many cognitive domains, the incidence of cognitive impairment in patients with classical galactosemia is not yet clear. Both clinicians and researchers encountering patients with classical galactosemia need to be aware of possible cognitive impairments. Future well-designed studies are needed to determine the cognitive profile of classical galactosemia. This can be the basis for the development of intervention strategies.

The decision-making problems have attracted the attention of many researchers in a wide range of disciplines. The decision situations in which multiple individuals involved, each with their own knowledge about alternatives of the decision problem requires advanced to deal with this difficulty techniques. This work evaluates the impact of training received by a group of workers in the assessments are modeled using different kinds of information provided by different groups of experts to manage the uncertainty and subjectivity of such assessments for there to infer its relationship with the training received. Therefore, it is necessary and appropriate to establish a framework adapted to the heterogeneous nature of these criteria. Model and manage uncertainty has been successful and involves making computing processes with words hence the model 2-tuples linguistic representation is offered as a solution for their accuracy, ease of information management in complex frameworks, as to give greater interpretability of the resulting data.

In the conditions of a substantial increase in the number of foreign students in the universities of the Russian Federation in recent years especially relevant research of studying ways to increase the effectiveness of the formation of the communicative competence of this contingent of students in the educational and scientific sphere of communication at the stage of pre-university training. Professionally oriented teaching in groups of the humanitarian profile has its own specific features, due to the conditions of study, in which students who have chosen humanitarian areas of a fairly wide range can study in one group. The purpose of this paper is to describe the student body studying at the stage of pre-university training at Russian as a Foreign Language Center of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU HSIEP RFLC), to find out their educational route and degree of conformity of the scientific prose style course, which is prepared based on traditional approaches, to communicative needs relevant to future majors of the students, and to propose and to present an argument for a more effective technology of modular education. As methods of scientific research, the work used the method of analysis of scientific sources devoted to the competence approach to teaching, professionally oriented teaching of Russian as a foreign language and modular technology. Also, the questionnaire method allowed us to obtain data as a result of a survey of 154 students of the pre-university training program of SPbPU HSIEP RFLC. On the basis of theoretical analysis, it has been established that, within the competence-based approach, professionally oriented training in groups of the humanitarian profile at the stage of pre-university training should take place taking into account the communication needs that are relevant for future specialties of students. Empirical method of study allowed identifying a list of future majors of pre-graduate training program trainees, the top of which are the following: linguistics (46%), foreign area studies (24%), majors related to art and culture (8%), psychological and educational majors (8%), law (6%), advertising and public relations (5%). Also a low level of foreign students’ satisfaction (39%) with the content of scientific prose style course based on traditional technology of mass group learning, which preconditions the need to use an innovative modular technology in teaching and learning process. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the description of the process of pre-university training of foreign students in humanitarian groups through the prism of the foundations of modular education. According to the authors, modular training will allow to quickly vary the content aspect of training, focusing on the communicative needs of a certain humanitarian direction.
