Kualanamu International Airport is the busiest airport in Sumatra. In 2015, it served 8 million passengers and 41.6 thousand tons of goods for international and domestic flights. Hub-spoke networks are optimized when generally having a transport efficiency of at least 49-52% as well as providing air service in a wide geographic area and to many destinations. The aim of this study is to analyse the hub-spoke airport networks based on the Herfindahl-Hirschmann Index (HHI) to increase air transport efficiency in Sumatra Island. This study uses data from cargo production and couple’s flights from 10 airports in Sumatra Island for domestic flight route pairs and 6 airports for international flight route pairs. The results of the study show that route networks in Sumatra Island in existing conditions have not developed with the hub-spokes concept. The HHI analysis, indicates 2 hubs for domestic flights and 1 hub (Kualanamu) for international flights. Kualanamu International Airport and Hang Nadim International Airport were indicated as hub airports in Sumatra Island for domestic flights. The efficiency of air cargo transportation through the system (2 hubs and 8 spokes) results in a transport efficiency at 68.37%, which is still far above the efficient range at 49-52%.

The article shows the strategic role of cargo air transport in the economies of the world, related to the maintenance of foreign trade, urgent delivery of goods, their transportation over long distances, and so on. The determining factors of the development of cargo air transport in the global economy are systematized: organizational innovations, information technologies, new forms of cooperation of air carriers and logistics solutions. The contribution of air transport to the formation of cargo turnover in Ukraine is determined. The opposite dynamics of volumes of cargo transportation by air and other types of transport is revealed. The contradiction between the low share of air cargo traffic and their strong absolute and structural growth is quantitatively shown. Air freight is defined by a market of oligopolistic competition due to a limited number of economic entities, the dominance of one large and several medium-sized players, the presence of barriers to entry, which are financial-investment and technical-technological nature. The attractiveness of the air freight market for investments is shown given the predominant positivity of financial results and the growing share of profitable enterprises. The institutional forms of organization of cargo air carriers (classic, combined, hybrid) are generalized, their advantages and disadvantages are defined. The principles of functioning of transport chains and realization of multimodal transportations on the basis of cargo air transport are substantiated. The main information systems of booking and management of air cargo transportation, distribution, pricing, calculations, tracking of luggage by buyers and sellers are characterized. The requirements of the International Air Transport Association for the use of innovative e-freight technologies in aviation are summarized, recommendations for joining the subjects of the domestic air cargo market in terms of electronic document management and simplification of customs procedures are developed. The improvement of economic mechanisms of development of cargo air transport in Ukraine on the basis of special economic zones of port type is offered.

The air cargo market is growing due to the spread of information technology (IT) products, the expansion of e-commerce, and high value-added products. Weather deterioration is one factor with a substantial impact on cargo transportation. If the arrival of cargo is delayed, supply chain delays occur. Because delays are directly linked to costs, companies need precise predictions of cargo transportation. This study develops a forecasting model to predict delay times and costs caused by the delayed arrival of cargo due to severe weather in the air cargo service environment. A seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model is developed and analyzed to address delay reductions in cargo transportation. Necessary data are identified and collected using time series data provided by Incheon International Airport Corporation, with an emphasis on monthly data on cargo throughput at Incheon International Airport from January 2009 to December 2016. The model makes forecasts for further analysis. The model stands to provide decision makers with strategic and sustainable insights for cargo transportation planning and other similar applications.

The Development Potential of Air Transportation Routes at Mutiara SIS Al Jufri Airport Palu: The government policy in regulating the air transportation routes on a macro basis aims to open up regional isolation and develop the potential of those regions. Mutiara SIS Al Jufri Airport is one of the entrances to the movement of people and goods through air transport to Central Sulawesi Province. Along with the increasingly socio-economic development of Palu City and Central Sulawesi Province in general, the demand for movement of people and goods also increased, and with the economic improvement of society of Central Sulawesi Province, air transportation becomes the main choice. This study is intended to measure the potential for the development of aviation routes at Mutiara SIS Al Jufri Airport, based on the opinion of current users of air transport and air carrier services, and adapted to the Master Plan of the Airport and the Spatial Planning Document of Central Sulawesi Province, using multiple linier regression analysis method. The results of the survey to the airlines provide the information about the plan to open the Palu-Morowali flight route due to its potential demand for transportation of goods between those cities using ATR-72 type aircraft, where there are many production of mining and palm oil products in Morowali. However, from the analysis, if ATR-72 aircraftshould be operated then the runway capacity at Morowali Airport have to be developed since the current condition with runway length of 1,050 m is not sufficient to be landed by ATR-72 in which require a runway with minimum length of 1,600 m.

ABSTRACT To mount an effective world wide response, oil spill clean-up equipment and experienced personnel need to quickly reach the scene. The distance and often remoteness of the incident from an International response centre (Tier 3) dictates that to achieve this rapid response air transport will be required. Speed, flexibility and frequency of scheduled flights combined with increased availability on the charter market have made air transport a realistic option to most areas of the world. Chartered aircraft are most likely to be side-loading cargo jets and as such response equipment needs to be suited both in size and ease of loading/offloading. To assist in the air transportation of response equipment, a specialised aircraft pallet system has been developed. The system comprises of four pallet modules per aircraft pallet station which have been profiled to fit within the most commonly used cargo jets. Pre-packing the pallet modules decreases loading times considerably, they can also be declared as known cargo helping move them through the air cargo security procedures. An assessment of type and quantity of equipment required will be made before dispatch, these small packages present maximum flexibility and allow “mix and match” of different pallet modules to create the final load. The modules can be delivered to airports with low capacity offloading equipment. This is enhanced by a specialist self build rapid equipment delivery and deployment system.

Purpose Deregulation of domestic markets and the liberalization of international markets have dramatically changed air transportation. One of the important results of this change is the environmental effects of air transportation. This study aims to examine the implications of air transportation on environmental sustainability in the context of airline business strategies in liberalized and globalized air transport industry. Design/methodology/approach The paper discusses the relationship between liberalization, airline strategies and environmental sustainability of air transportation using the related literature. Then, to show some environmental impacts on the axis of the relationship discussed, emission rates for the aircraft landing and take-off phase were calculated on a global basis based on the aircraft traffic. Findings The discussion in the paper shows that the liberalization policies and the strategies of airlines supported by these policies, in essence, contradict the environmental sustainability of air transport. Considering the flight share projections of EUROCONTROL for different aircraft types on a global basis and the World Bank’s global flight traffic forecast for the years 2016 and 2025, it has been demonstrated that the number of aircraft departures will increase by 30%, whilst the number of aircraft emissions will increase by 41.5%. Practical implications Airlines are one of the main actors that will play a role in reducing the environmental impacts of air transportation. Therefore, this study is important in giving an idea to both policymakers and airline managers on how airline companies’ strategies should be shaped to realize both corporate sustainability and environmentally sustainable air transportation. Originality/value There are many studies in the literature regarding the environmental effects of air transport. However, there are not many studies linking environmental impacts with airline strategies that directly affect air transport demand. This study is different in that it gives environmental sustainability by associating it with its root causes.
