The consistently conducted analytical, numerical and experimental studies of nonlinear damped vibrations of planar discrete systems are presented in the paper. The combined methodology is applied to a horizontal vibrating system, consisting of two translational moving bodies connected by three springs. The non-linear nature of the damping is due to the dry friction forces accompanying the vibrating process. The mathematical model of the vibrating system is composed in a matrix form by the second order Lagrange equations. Numerical studies are realized in two ways. Firstly, in the Simulink environment, a simulation model was composed. Then, in the MATLAB environment, an animation model was developed using the third animation method offered by the programming system. The experimental studies were conducted by stand for study the small vibrations of discrete planar systems. The stand is part of the experimental equipment of the Lab for numerical and experimental dynamic modelling, UACEG, Sofia, Bulgaria. (www.dlab-uacg-bg.eu). All models - the dynamic model and its corresponding mathematical, simulation, animation and experimental model are open to additional bodies to obtain discrete vibrating systems with a larger number of degrees of freedom.

In this paper the advantages and weak points of the analytical and vectorial methods of the derivation of equations of motion for discrete systems are considered. The analytical method is discussed especially with respect to Boltzmann-Hamel equations, as generalized Lagrange equations. The vectorial method is analysed with respect to the momentum equation and to the generalized angular momentum equation about an arbitrary reference point, moving in an arbitrary manner. It is concluded that, for the systems with complicated geometry of motion and a large number of degrees of freedom, the vectorial method can be more effective than the analytical method. The combination of the analytical and vectorial methods helps to verify the equations of motion and to avoid errors, especially in the case of systems with rather complicated geometry.

AbstractThe article deals with atwo-mass above resonant oscillatory system of an eccentric-pendulum type vibrating table. Based on the model of a vibrating oscillatory system with three masses, the system of differential equations of motion of oscillating masses with five degrees of freedom is compiled using generalized Lagrange equations of the second kind. For given values of mechanical parameters of the oscillatory system and initial conditions, the autonomous system of differential equations of motion of oscillating masses is solved by the numerical Rosenbrock method. The results of analytical modelling are verified by experimental studies. The two-mass vibration system with eccentric-pendulum drive in resonant oscillation mode is characterized by an instantaneous start and stop of the drive without prolonged transient modes. Parasitic oscillations of the working body, as a body with distributed mass, are minimal at the frequency of forced oscillations.

Curvature elasticity is used to derive the equilibrium conditions that govern the mechanics of membrane–membrane adhesion. These include the Euler–Lagrange equations and the interface conditions which are derived here for the most general class of strain energies permissible for fluid surfaces. The theory is specialized for homogeneous membranes with quadratic ‘Helfrich’-type energies with non-uniform spontaneous curvatures. The results are employed to solve four-point boundary value problems that simulate the equilibrium shapes of lipid vesicles that adhere to each other. Numerical studies are conducted to investigate the effect of relative sizes, osmotic pressures, and adhesion-induced spontaneous curvature on the morphology of adhered vesicles.

To raise the programming efficiency of arc welding robots, the offline programming system was developed for a Motoman-UP20 robot with redundant degrees of freedom in VC++ integration environment. The system consists of kinematics analysis, motion simulation, welding trajectory plan, welding parameters plan and job file generating module. It can plan the motion path and posture of welding gun for saddle-shape seams, and display the workpiece on the interface synchronically. Job instructions can be made step by step, or generated automatically. Kinematics simulation module and communication module are integrated together, and job files can be exchanged between PC and robot controller via Ethernet to realize remote control.

Integrated single-axis force sensors allow an accurate and cost-efficient force measurement in 6 degrees of freedom for hexapod structures and kinematics. Depending on the sensor placement, the measurement is affected by internal forces that need to be compensated for by a measurement model. Since the parameters of the model can change during machine usage, a fast and easy calibration procedure is requested. This work studies parameter identification procedures for force measurement models on the example of a rigid hexapod-based end-effector. First, measurement and identification models are presented and parameter sensitivities are analysed. Next, two excitation strategies are applied and discussed: identification from quasi-static poses and identification from accelerated continuous trajectories. Both poses and trajectories are optimized by different criteria and evaluated in comparison. Finally, the procedures are validated by experimental studies with reference payloads. In conclusion, both strategies allow accurate parameter identification within a fast procedure in an operational machine state.

In this paper, analytical equations for the central film thickness in slender elliptic contacts are investigated. A comparison of state-of-the-art formulas with simulation results of a multilevel elastohydrodynamic lubrication solver is conducted and shows considerable deviation. Therefore, a new film thickness formula for slender elliptic contacts with variable ellipticity is derived. It incorporates asymptotic solutions, which results in validity over a large parameter domain. It captures the behaviour of increasing film thickness with increasing load for specific very slender contacts. The new formula proves to be significantly more accurate than current equations. Experimental studies and discussions on minimum film thickness will be presented in a subsequent publication.

Abstract Dynamical systems with two degrees-of-freedom, with quadratic nonlinearities and parametric excitations are studied in this analysis. The 1:2 superharmonic internal resonance case is analyzed. The method of harmonic balance is used to obtain a set of four first-order amplitude equations that govern the dynamics of the first-order approximation of the response. An analytical technique, based on Melnikov’s method is used to predict the parameter range for which chaotic dynamics exist in the undamped averaged system. Numerical studies show that chaotic responses are quite common in these quadratic systems and chaotic responses occur even in presence of damping.

Abstract The paper presents experimental and numerical studies to determine the equivalent second moment of area of the uniform torsion of the two-chord steel single laced members. The members are used as poles of railway traction network gates, and steel columns of framed buildings as well. The stiffness of uniform torsion of this kind of columns allows to the determine the critical loads of the spatial stability. The experimental studies have been realized on a single - span members with rotation arrested at their ends, loaded by a torque applied at the mid-span. The relationship between angle of rotation of the considered cross-section and the torque has been determined. Appropriate numerical model was created in the ABAQUS program, based on the finite element method. A very good compatibility has been observed between experimental and numerical studies. The equivalent second moment of area of the uniform torsion for analysed members has been determined by comparing the experimental and analytical results to those obtained from differential equation of non-uniform torsion, based on Vlasov’s theory. Additionally, the parametric analyses of similar members subjected to the uniform torsion, for the richer range of cross-sections have been carried out by the means of SOFiSTiK program. The purpose of the latter was determining parametrical formulas for calculation of the second moment of area of uniform torsion.

Structural pounding can cause considerable damage and even lead to collapse of structures. Most research focuses on modeling, parameter investigation, and mitigation approaches. With the development of structural health monitoring, the on-line detection of pounding becomes possible. The detection of pounding can provide useful information of potential damage of structures. This paper proposed using wavelet scalograms of dynamic response to detect pounding and examined the feasibility of this method. Numerical investigations were performed on a pounding system that consisted of a damped single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure and a rigid barrier. Hertz contact model was used to simulate pounding behavior. The responses and pounding forces of the system under harmonic and earthquake excitations were numerically solved. The wavelet scalograms of acceleration responses were used to identify poundings. It was found that the scalograms can indicate the occurrence of pounding and occurrence time very well. The severity of the poundings was also approximately estimated. Experimental studies were carried out, in which shake table tests were conducted on a bridge model that underwent pounding between its different components during ground motion excitation. The wavelet scalograms of the bridge responses indicated pounding occurrence quite well. Hence the conclusions from the numerical studies were verified experimentally.

A new concept of a flexible rock-shed is presented for protection of the railway from falling rocks. The flexible rock-shed is made of flexible nets connected by specific spring spacer bars to an array of reinforced concrete portable frames which are linked by a longitudinal steel tube truss. To evaluate the performance of the flexible rock-shed, experimental and numerical studies are carried out in the present study. Impact tests are conducted on a full-scale partial model of the prototype structure when it is subjected to a falling block of 340 kg. The impact time interval, maximum deflection of the flexible net, tensile forces in the supporting ropes, and axial strains of spring spacer bars are recorded. To further examine the dynamic behavior of the flexible rock-shed, numerical simulations are also carried out by using the explicit finite element code ANSYS/LS-DYNA. It is found that the numerical results coincide well with the experimental data and both the numerical and experimental studies reveal that the structure can withstand impact energy of 50 kJ with all the materials working in the elastic range. The structural details are improved and the basis for the design and construction of similar structures in the future is provided.<br>
