With the increasingly intense competition in the market, more attention has been paid to customer’s perceptual requirements. Combining human sensibility and technology, Kansei Engineering plays a crucial role for industrial designers in making decisions at an earlier design stage in product development. However, sometimes it is challenging to define the customer requirements during the market research phase, especially for the perceptual requirements. Given this problem, this paper develops a process for establishing perceptual indexes based on the axiomatic design approach to improve design efficiency. To achieve this, an initial perceptual index is first built based on data previously collected from designers or design agencies. Then, the theory of axiomatic design is used to classify the schemes. The final perceptual index is filtered and built according to the frequency of occurrence.

In view of sofa product’s features such as demand of great types and inefficient design, the paper presents a method of parametric design on the simple sofa based on RhinoScript. With analysis of simple sofa’s modeling characteristics, the model of simple sofa could be presented by different parameters. Then models of different sizes and appearance styles could be created easily and quickly by inputting different parameters. This method improves the design efficiency and avoids industrial designers’ repeat work. The design process of a kind of simple sofa testified the method and a series of sofa proposals were easily generated.

Engineering products go through 4 stages of lifecycle; design, production, use, and disposal. Engineers have developed tools for avoiding design flaws that cause troubles in the later stages. Accidents and malfunctions, however, still happen and some are even catastrophic. Once in the market, products require service. Whether scheduled, or unexpected, service is mostly carried out by subsidiaries of the manufacturer or sometimes unrelated specialists. When product troubles occur, service companies tend to seek solutions within their own organization without going back to the design stage. This approach may prove less costly, however, quick fixes may lead to disasters. Industries currently lack effective ways of feeding service information back to design. We analyzed some real accidents that took place in Japan where hard work in the use stage triggered the events. Information from the use stage to design will prevent accidents and also improve design to closely model reality.

Article use Visual LISP development tools and DCL dialog technology, which implements the standard straight teeth, a two-dimensional cylindrical gear parametric drawing on AutoCAD platform, with easy to operate and improve design efficiency. We achieved that using the dialog box design input parameters, and gear parts of the design calculations, parameters proofreading and all kinds of gear design drawing different structures by programming. The output is fully automated computer-aided design system. The results show that the design of the system significantly improves the efficiency of the part design.

Electrical design in a variety of electrical equipment needs to search, copy and modify constantly, so it is inefficient. Parametric design technology is the most common way to achieve rapid design, but less in the electrical design of the specific application. With the electrical equipment model parameterization and the reuse technology model, develop electrical equipment design software based on CAD secondary development. Use of software, design by three levels of reuse technology on the equipment for quick drawing, editing, statistics, to avoid duplication of work more efficiently, to improve design efficiency and reduce human waste.

Unprecedented challenges arehas been facinging by the traditional industrial design methods, shortening the product development cycle and improving design efficiency has become an important issue for designers, various kinds of new design methods have thus emerged, among which the Design Professional Knowledgebase is the very effective one. The goal of this research is to collect a large quantity of information about product presentation to establish a professional knowledge base – the Product Presentation Database, through which we explored new thinking about industrial design configuration on the one hand, and on the other, designers can refer to this database for lots of information about product design to improve design efficiency greatly. This document explains and demonstrates how to prepare your camera-ready manuscript for Trans Tech Publications. The best is to read these instructions and follow the outline of this text. The text area for your manuscript must be 17 cm wide and 25 cm high (6.7 and 9.8 inches, resp.). Do not place any text outside this area. Use good quality, white paper of approximately 21 x 29 cm or 8 x 11 inches (please do not change the document setting from A4 to letter). Your manuscript will be reduced by approximately 20% by the publisher. Please keep this in mind when designing your figures and tables etc.

DTH (Down-the-hole) Bits are widely used in engineering construction and mining but the design level of DTH Bits needs improving. The kinds of DTH Bits are various in the practical application. Meanwhile, design efficiency is low and management in design information of historical product is insufficient. To solve the problems, key features of the DTH Bits used in different strata are analyzed and SolidWorks secondary development system of DTH Bits is developed with VB.NET. The secondary development system runs in the same process with SolidWorks in the form of a plug-in. ADO technique is used to connect the system and database which stores design information of historical product. It proves that the secondary development system can improve design and management efficiency of DTH Bits.

This paper discusses the development of E-saving glass (ESG) in Malaysia by using quality function deployment (QFD) method for market transformation. This paper focuses on two objectives, i.e., (i) to investigate the suitability of the ESG in Malaysian market for customer satisfaction, product quality and manufacturer competitiveness by using systematic tools of QFD process, and (ii) the implementation of ESG by looking at factors analysis based on QFD method and Malaysian market transformation. The QFD method is utilised by a multidisciplinary team to translate a set of customer requirements (the “voice of customer” (VOC)), market research and technical benchmarking data into an appropriate number of prioritised engineering targets that could be met by a new product design.

This paper aims to provide an insight to later researchers on the application of axiomatic design in the area of design for end-of-life (EOL) management. Among all life cycle stages of a product, design and development stage is the one that influences the later stages the most in terms of environmental impacts. In order to achieve sustainable product development, one of the considerations to be taken during the design stage is EOL management. EOL management process can be enhanced by utilizing a robust design method as well as an effective method for evaluating product design. Recent researches show that application of axiomatic design in the field of eco-design (especially design for EOL management) is still in a premature stage despite having a vast application area that covers the aspect of product design, manufacturing and supply chain management. Nonetheless, a case study published recently on eco-design using axiomatic approach has shown adequate feasibility and effectiveness. Therefore, design for sustainable EOL using axiomatic approach is worth further exploration.

Accidents with consumer products originate from either product defects or misuse. These two explicit causes result from aging degradation, coupled design, or in some cases from causes that are unknown. We analyzed over 600 cases of past accidents with consumer products in the Japanese market. Of the 309 cases of product defects, 51% were caused by aging degradation, and coupled design was responsible for 66% of the 296 cases of misuse. Evaluation, from the viewpoint of axiomatic design, of these coupled design caused misuse cases revealed that over half of them had coupling of the operational functional requirement in the design stage. These cases consist about 38% of the 296 misuse cases. Instead of blaming the user for misuse, if the designer carefully removes such coupling in the design stage, such accidents can be avoided. In the actual design work, changing part configurations, or adding sensors or interlocks can decouple operational functional requirements.
