In vivo tumours are highly heterogeneous entities which often comprise intratumoural regions of hypoxia and widespread necrosis. In this paper, we develop a new three phase model of nutrient-limited, avascular tumour growth to investigate how dead material within the tumour may influence the tumour’s growth dynamics. We model the tumour as a mixture of tumour cells, dead cellular material and extracellular fluid. The model equations are derived using mass and momentum balances for each phase along with appropriate constitutive equations. The tumour cells are viewed as a viscous fluid pressure, while the extracellular fluid phase is viewed as inviscid. The physical properties of the dead material are intermediate between those of the tumour cells and extracellular fluid, and are characterised by three key parameters. Through numerical simulation of the model equations, we reproduce spatial structures and dynamics typical of those associated with the growth of avascular tumour spheroids. We also characterise novel, non-monotonic behaviours which are driven by the internal dynamics of the dead material within the tumour. Investigations of the parameter sub-space describing the properties of the dead material reveal that the way in which non-viable tumour cells are modelled may significantly influence the qualitative tumour growth dynamics.

The objective of this study is to quantify the effects of humic acid solution infiltration on the transport of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soil columns using a three-phase transport model. From experimental results, it is found that the dissolved organic carbon enhances the transport of OCPs in the soil columns. In the OCPs-only column, the concentration profiles of OCPs can be simulated well using a two-phase transport model with numerical method or analytical solution. In the OCPs-DOC column, the migrations of aldrin, DDT and its daughter compounds are faster than those in the OCPs-only column. The simulation with the three-phase model is more accurate than that with the two-phase model. In addition, significant decrease of the fluid pore velocities of the OCPs-DOC column was found. When DOC leachate is applied for remediation of soil or groundwater pollution, the decrease of mean pore velocities will be a crucial affecting factor.

Besides the introduction of multi-party elections, the sub-Saharan wave of democratic reforms of the 1990s encompassed the introduction of limits to the number of terms that a chief executive can serve. Executive term limits (ETLs) are key for democracy to advance in a continent with a legacy of personal rule. However, the manipulation of ETLs has become a recurring mode of autocratisation, through which African aspiring over-stayers weaken executive constraints, taint political competition, and limit citizens’ possibility to choose who governs. This article presents a three-phase model of autocratisation by ETL manipulation and, using new data, offers one of the first regional comparative studies of ETL manipulation in sub-Saharan Africa that rests on econometric modelling. The analysis leads to revisiting some previous findings on the drivers of ETL manipulation and highlights the relevance of other previously underestimated factors that may either discourage a leader from challenging ETLs or prevent their successful manipulation.

Scientific communication has undergone deep transformations, since the emergence of Internet. Aiming to provide further thought on the evolution of scientific communication, this paper features a historical overview of the scientific communication advances over the last twenty years through a three-phase model for the evolution of the electronic journal and the preprints services, and presents Brazilian contemporary panorama for scientific communication. The three-phase model presented in this work is an adaptation of that one proposed by Tenopir et al. (2003) to describe the patterns of journal use by scientists since 1990. The early evolutionary phase followed the emergence of the first digital journals and the creation of repositories in the Web for publishing preliminary versions of scientific literature on the author’s initiative; by that time, most academics reproved electronic publishing initiatives. From 1996 and forward, in the consolidation phase, electronic journals were commonly identical to their print counterparts; the acceptance of the electronic format began to increase, and preprint services got underway in several disciplines. The advanced evolutionary phase started with the world discussion on open access to scientific information. The comparison of the current electronic journal with that viewed by enthusiasts in the first years of the 1990s shows that some aspects still remain to be improved in electronic formal and informal communication, towards effective dissemination of scientific information.

A estrutura da pastagem é uma característica determinante tanto da dinâmica de crescimento da planta quanto do comportamento ingestivo dos animais. O objetivo do trabalho foi descrever a densidade da forragem e a proporção dos componentes morfológicos da planta, nos estratos verticais de pastagens de capim Marandu, submetido ao pastejo em diferentes alturas. O delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado e as análises de variância e de regressão. Durante o experimento, as alturas médias dos seis piquetes utilizados foram de 10, 17, 18, 29, 32 e 50 cm. O material coletado foi separado, em lâmina foliar, colmo verde e material morto, que foram analisados quanto ao teor de matéria seca, proteína bruta e fibra em detergente neutro. Os estratos verticais apresentaram diferentes composições em relação aos componentes morfológicos de acordo com a altura do pasto. Os estratos próximos ao solo apresentaram maior densidade de forragem com valores de 370 a 543 kg/ha.cm, maior proporção de colmos verdes (30 a 53%) e material morto (25 a 52%) e menor de lâminas foliares (10 a 35%). Independente da altura do pasto, os estratos superiores são mais sensíveis aos efeitos do animal e do ambiente, e apresentaram maiores teores de PB e FDN para lâminas foliares e colmos. Nos estratos acima de 15 cm, os valores de PB e FDN das lâminas foliares verdes variaram entre 10,3 e 13,6% e 49,3 e 54,2%, respectivamente. O manejo em diferentes alturas altera as características dos estratos verticais do pasto, principalmente, nos estratos acima de 15 cm.   Palavras-chave: Altura do Pasto. Densidade Forrageira. Colmos Verdes. Material Morto. Lâmina Foliar.   Abstract The pasture structure is a determining characteristic of both the plant growth dynamics and the animals ingestive behavior. The objective of the work was to describe the density and the proportion of the plant’morphological components, in the pastures vertical strata of Marandu grass, subjected to grazing at different heights. The design used was completely randomized and the analysis of variance and regression.  During the experiment, the average heights of  six paddocks used were 10, 17, 18, 29, 32 and 50 cm. The collected material was separated into leaf blade, green stem and dead material, which were analyzed as to the dry matter content, crude protein and fiber in neutral detergent. The vertical strata presented different compositions in relation to the morphological components according to the height of the pasture.  The near-soil strata showed higher forage density with values from 370 to 543 kg/ha.cm, higher proportion of green stems (30 to 53%) and dead material (25 to 52%) and smaller number of leaf blades (10 to 35%). Regardless of the height of the pasture, the upper strata are more sensitive to the animal and the environment effects, and presented higher levels of CP and NDF for leaf blades and stems.  In the strata above 15 cm, the values of PB and NDF of the green leaf blades varied between 10.3 and 13.6% and 49.3 and 54.2%, respectively. The management of different heights change the characteristics of the pasturevertical strata, mainly in the strata above 15 cm.   Keywords: Height of the Pasture. Forage Density. Green Stems. Changes in the content of N-acetylneuraminic acid in rat erythrocyte membranes at different stages of experimental tumour (Morris hepatoma 5123) development were examined. Its content was lowered on the 30th and 40th day after transplantation of the tumour cells, as compared to the results for normal healthy rats. As a result of the tumour growth, the content of N-acetylgalactosamine, galactose and mannose in rat erythrocyte membranes became lowered, whereas that of glucose remained unchanged. The content of fucose was raised at early stage of tumour growth, and remained at this high level till the 40th day of experiment.

Qualitative research is an inherent part of the human services profession, since it emphasizes the great and multifaceted complexity characterizing human experience and the sociocultural context in which humans act. In the department of human services at Emek Yezreel College, Israel, we have developed a three-phase model to ensure a relatively intense exposure to and practice in qualitative methodology. While in the first phase students are exposed to the qualitative thinking and writing, they are required in the second phase to take a Qualitative Research Methods course that includes practice. The third and final phase includes conducting a qualitative research seminar. The aim of the present article is to shed light on the dilemmas involved in implementing the three-phase model.
