One new flavonol diglycoside, 4′,5-dihydroxy-3,3′,7-trimethoxyflavone 4′- O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), and two known compounds (2–3) were isolated from the methanol extract of Anoectochilus annamensis Aver. aerial parts. The effects were evaluated of all isolated compounds (1–3) on LPS-induced production of the inflammatory mediator nitric oxide (NO) by RAW264.7 cells. 4′,5-Dihydroxy-3,3′,7-trimethoxyflavone (2) was the most active while the addition of a rutinoside at C-4′ (compound 1) decreased the inhibitory activity. This is the first report on the chemical composition and biological activity of A annamensis.

The subject of the review is the component composition and biological activity of species of genus Viola L. (Violaceae) from the flora of the Russian Federation according publications appeared over the past few decades. Chemical constituents and biological activities have been reported for 24 species of the 100 Viola species occurring in Russian. Components of various structures: flavonoids, cyclotides, anthocyanidins, phenylpropanoic acids, coumarins, alkaloids, fatty acids and its derivatives and ect. were found in the roots, aerial parts, flowers and leaves. Composition of 137 flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins etc. was expanded with references to their chemical formulas and literature sources. Data of the essential oils isolated from the leaves of V. tricolor L., V. arvensis Murray, V. yedoensis Makino и V. odorata L. is systematized. It was demonstrated that extracts, their fractions, and some components showed different types of biological activity, including anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antiviral ones. The revealed range of biological activity partially confirmed expediency of using species of genus Viola in folk and standard practice medicine.

Herbal medicines possess a great demand in both developed and developing countries as a source of primary health care owing to their attributes having wide biological and medicinal activities, high safety margins and lesser costs. People living in rural areas of Nepal depend largely in the herbal medicines for the treatment. The present study concerns with the study of pharmacognostic characteristics, phytochemical constituents and the biological activity of Amaranthus spinosus L. The hexane, chloroform, ethanolic and aqueous extract of its aerial parts were subjected to preliminary phytochemical analysis and detected saponin, carbohydrate, tannin, protein, glycoside, flavonoid and phenol as phytoconstituents. The transverse section of the stem and leaves showed characteristic vascular bundle tissues. All the extracts were used for testing the antimicrobial activity and brine shrimp lethality. No extract showed the antimicrobial activity and ethanolic extract showed LC50 value of 31.62 ppm.
