We present a retrospective review of a new technique for the transportation of alveolar bone using a Hyrax device modified by the principal author (O.A.V.). There were seven patients (five males and two females), including five patients with cleft palate and lip diagnosis, one patient with a high-speed gunshot wound, and one patient with facial trauma sequel due to mandibular fracture. They were all treated with an alveolar bone transportation technique (ABT) through the use of the modified Hyrax device (VEGAX). Before surgery, distraction osteogenesis of the bifocal type was performed on four patients, and the trifocal type was performed on the other three patients. However, in one case, direct dental anchorage was not used, only orthodontic appliances. In all the cases, new bone formation and gingival tissue around the defect were obtained, posterior to the alveolar distraction process; no complications were observed in any patient. In one case, two teeth involved in the disk of the ABT were extracted, due to a previous condition of periodontal disease. The alveolar bone transport with the VEGAX device is an accessible technique for almost every patient with alveolar defects due to diverse causes. In all the presented cases, predictability and success were demonstrated.

AbstractElectro-absorption (EA) waveguide-coupled modulators are essential building blocks for on-chip optical communications. Compared to state-of-the-art silicon (Si) devices, graphene-based EA modulators promise smaller footprints, larger temperature stability, cost-effective integration and high speeds. However, combining high speed and large modulation efficiencies in a single graphene-based device has remained elusive so far. In this work, we overcome this fundamental trade-off by demonstrating the 2D-3D dielectric integration in a high-quality encapsulated graphene device. We integrated hafnium oxide (HfO2) and two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) within the insulating section of a double-layer (DL) graphene EA modulator. This combination of materials allows for a high-quality modulator device with high performances: a ~39 GHz bandwidth (BW) with a three-fold increase in modulation efficiency compared to previously reported high-speed modulators. This 2D-3D dielectric integration paves the way to a plethora of electronic and opto-electronic devices with enhanced performance and stability, while expanding the freedom for new device designs.

Introduction: Periodontitis is a lifestyle-related disease that is characterized by chronic inflammation in gingival tissue. Febuxostat, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, exerts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Objective: The present study investigated the effects of febuxostat on periodontitis in a rat model. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: control, periodontitis, and febuxostat-treated periodontitis groups. Periodontitis was induced by placing a ligature wire around the 2nd maxillary molar and the administration of febuxostat (5 mg/kg/day) was then initiated. After 4 weeks, alveolar bone loss was assessed by micro-computed tomography and methylene blue staining. The expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG), a bone resorption inhibitor, was detected by quantitative RT-PCR and immunological staining, and the number of osteoclasts in gingival tissue was assessed by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining. The mRNA and protein expression levels of the proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), in gingival tissue were measured using quantitative RT-PCR and immunological staining. Oxidative stress in gingival tissue was evaluated by the expression of 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE), and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). To clarify the systemic effects of periodontitis, blood pressure and glucose tolerance were examined. Results: In rats with periodontitis, alveolar bone resorption was associated with reductions in OPG and increases in osteoclast numbers. The gingival expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, 4-HNE, and 8-OHdG was up-regulated in rats with periodontitis. Febuxostat significantly reduced alveolar bone loss, proinflammatory cytokine levels, and oxidative stress. It also attenuated periodontitis-induced glucose intolerance and blood pressure elevations. Conclusion: Febuxostat prevented the progression of periodontitis and associated systemic effects by inhibiting proinflammatory mediators and oxidative stress.

Periodontal disease is a common chronic adult condition. The bacteriumPorphyromonas gingivalishas been implicated in the aetiology of this disease, which causes destruction of the connective tissue and bone around the root area of the tooth. It has been observed that invadingP. gingivalisbacteria trigger the release of cytokines such as interleukin 8 and tumour necrosis factor α, leading to elevated numbers and activity of polymorphonucleocytes (PMN). As a result of stimulation by bacterial antigens, PMN produce the reactive oxygen species (ROS) superoxide via the respiratory burst as part of the host response to infection. Patients with periodontal disease display increased PMN number and activity. It has been suggested that this proliferation results in a high degree of ROS release, culminating in heightened oxidative damage to gingival tissue, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Antioxidant constituents in plasma have been well-documented, being chiefly ascorbate, albumin and urate, and these are known to display sensitivity to dietary antioxidant intakes. The concentration of antioxidants in saliva does not appear to mirror those of plasma. The extent of dietary influence upon salivary antioxidant status is unclear. Urate is the predominant salivary antioxidant, with albumin and ascorbate providing minor contributions. Previous research has found reduced salivary antioxidant activity in patients suffering from periodontal disease. An improved understanding of the role antioxidants play in periodontitis, and the influence of nutrition on antioxidant status, may lead to a possible nutritional strategy for the treatment of periodontal disease.

Over the past decades, periodontitis has become a rising health problem and caused various diseases. In the many studies shows that some extracts and compound to the prevention and treatment of periodontitis. This study focuses on the effects of inhibition of gingival damage and alveolar bone loss. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of Magnolia biondii extract (MBE) against ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. A ligature was placed around the molar teeth for 8 weeks, and MBE was administered for 8 weeks. Gingival tissue damage and alveolar bone loss were measured by microcomputed tomography (CT) analysis and histopathological examination. Serum Interluekin-1 β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), cyclooxygenases-2 (COX-2), and receptor activator of nuclear factor–κB ligand (RANKL) levels were investigated using commercial kits to confirm the antiperiodontitis effects of MBE. We confirmed that ligature-induced periodontitis resulted in gingival tissue damage and alveolar bone loss. However, treatment for 8 weeks with MBE protected from periodontal tissue damage and downregulated serum inflammatory cytokine factors and RANKL levels. These results suggest that MBE exerts antiperiodontitis effects by inhibiting gingival tissue destruction and alveolar bone loss through regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines in periodontitis-induced rats.

The author designed a new device for growing vegetable sprouts and ornamental plants by combining greenhouse design and soil-less cultivation technology together with houses construction, aiming at saving arable land and energy by rapidly producing sprouts or flowers through vertical cultivation by installing the new device on the roof-top of houses in rural areas. Taking into consideration of design ideas, technological process, and the selection of raw materials, along with their practical value and future prospects, the author construct a double-layered, vertically cultivated vaulting greenhouse. As a result, the use of soil-less cultivation techniques on the roofs of houses in the Chinese countryside shows promise as a potential solution to deal with the shortage of arable land. This new cultivation technique may be more effective in promoting agricultural productivity and sustainable development of the economy and society since it can take full advantage of available resources in order to achieve a more economical and intensive use of land. There are three major benefits with roof-top agriculture: First, by using greenhouses located on the tops of roofs, a grower can maximize his utilization of sunlight. Second, roof-top agriculture doesn’t require any additional arable land. Third, the vegetables can be planted all year-round. The life circle of crops was shortened and productivity was promoted. The application of the technology will significantly increase economic efficiency and practical value of the idle roof-tops of houses in rural and suburban areas.

Target detection and tracking is important in military as well as in civilian applications. In order to detect and track high-speed incoming threats, modern surveillance systems are equipped with multiple sensors to overcome the limitations of single-sensor based tracking systems. This research proposes the use of information from RADAR and Infrared sensors (IR) for tracking and estimating target state dynamics. A new technique is developed for information fusion of the two sensors in a way that enhances performance of the data association algorithm. The measurement acquisition and processing time of these sensors is not the same; consequently the fusion center measurements arrive out of sequence. To ensure the practicality of system, proposed algorithm compensates the Out of Sequence Measurements (OOSMs) in cluttered environment. This is achieved by a novel algorithm which incorporates a retrodiction based approach to compensate the effects of OOSMs in a modified Bayesian technique. The proposed modification includes a new gating strategy to fuse and select measurements from two sensors which originate from the same target. The state estimation performance is evaluated in terms of Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) for both position and velocity, whereas, track retention statistics are evaluated to gauge the performance of the proposed tracking algorithm. The results clearly show that the proposed technique improves track retention and and false track discrimination (FTD).
