The Parents' Help Centre is a child abuse prevention unit which began operation in Perth on 9.1.1976. The Centre is administered by the Western Australian Department for Community Welfare and is jointly funded by the Office of Child Care and Department for Community Welfare.The Centre aims at preventing the physical abuse of pre-school children by offering a non-professional family-type support service in a warm accepting atmosphere to parents who are having difficulty in controlling their behaviour towards their (pre-school) children. The Centre is available to parents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This is an edited version of the inaugural Constance Davey Memorial Lecture, delivered by Dr Rosalyn Shute on 23 February 1995, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the educational psychology (guidance) service in South Australia. Constance Davey's background and the beginnings of the psychological service in 1924 are described. The role of the educational psychologist as she established it is discussed, and its breadth contrasted with the narrow role which educational psychologists often find themselves taking today. The unique and vital role of the educational psychologist is outlined but concern is expressed about current professional problems both in Australia and overseas. This lecture was sponsored by the South Australian Department for Education and Children's Services.

The Officer Basin of South and Western Australia, in its broadest definition, contains a sequence of Late Proterozoic to pre-Permian strata with an unknown number of stratigraphic breaks. Recent investigations by the South Australian Department of Mines and Energy (SADME), which included helicopter-based geological surveys and stratigraphic drilling, have upgraded the petroleum potential of the basin.SADME Byilkaoora-1, drilled in the northeastern Officer Basin in 1979, contained hydrocarbon shows in the form of oil exuding from partly sealed vugs and fractures in argillaceous carbonates. Equivalent carbonates were intersected in SADME Marla-1A and 1B. Previously, in 1976, SADME Murnaroo-1 encountered shales and carbonates with moderate organic carbon content overlying a thick potential reservoir sandstone, while SADME Wilkinson-1, drilled in 1978, contained a carbonate sequence with marginally mature to mature oil-prone source rocks. Acritarchs extracted from the last mentioned carbonates indicate an Early Cambrian age.All ?Cambrian carbonate sequences recognised to date in the Officer Basin of South Australia are correlated with the Observatory Hill Beds, which are now considered to be the major potential source of petroleum in the eastern Officer Basin.

The Eighteenth British Commonwealth Lecture, “Australia's Internal Air Transport” by Mr. John L. Watkins, O.B.E., B.E., D.I.C., F.R.Ae.S., Director of Engineering, Trans-Australia Airlines, was given in the Lecture Theatre of the Society on 11th October 1962. The President of the Society, Mr. B. S. Shenstone, M.A.Sc, F.R.Ae.S., F.I.A.S., F.C.A.S.I., presided.Before the lecture Sir Roy Dobson, President of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors, presented certificates of S.B.A.C. University Scholarships to the following who had completed, or were about to complete, their courses: J. M. Chaney (Blackburn Aircraft, College of Aeronautics and Massachusetts Institute of Technology), B. C. Latter (Blackburn Aircraft and College of Aeronautics), R. A. Newnham (Handley Page—College of Aeronautics), R. A. Williamson (A. V. Roe & Co.—College of Aeronautics), D. F. Pilkington (A. V. Roe & Co.— Imperial College), R. J. G. Archer (de Havilland Engine Co.—Imperial College) and C. E. H. Joy (Bristol Siddeley—Imperial College).Introducing the Lecturer, Mr. Shenstone said that unlike many of the lecturers in this series, Mr. Watkins had been raised in the country of which he was to speak. He had taken his degree of Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Adelaide in 1930 and then took a post-graduate course at Imperial College, London. In 1932 he joined Vickers-Armstrongs and worked on early geodetic work under Dr. Barnes Wallis. Returning to Australia in 1934, Mr. Watkins joined the Air Board, which later became the Australian Department of Civil Aviation. During the war Mr. Watkins had worked on special projects for the RAAF in the Australian Department of Aircraft Production, with the Army Inventions Directorate, and on many other projects. When Trans-Australia Airlines was formed in 1946 he was appointed Technical Superintendent and since 1953 had been Director of Engineering. One of the jobs he was most noted for outside Australia was his responsibility for choosing aircraft for TAA and also for British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines when that Airline existed as a separate entity. In 1950 Mr. Watkins had been loaned to the Government of India as Technical Adviser to the Indian Air Transport Inquiry Committee.Mr. Watkins had been awarded the O.B.E. for his services to Australian Civil Aviation in 1958 and had been a Fellow of the Society since 1956. He was a past Chairman of the Melbourne Branch of the Australian Division.

David Catcheside was one of the seminal figures in the post-war development of genetics, both in the United Kingdom and Australia. He made distinguished contributions in several different areas: plant genetics and cytology, the genetic effects of radiation, fungal biochemical genetics, controls of genetic recombination and, in his retirement, bryology. As a teacher and postgraduate supervisor he played a large part in launching the next generation of geneticists in both hemispheres. As a professor and administrator he was responsible for several new institutional developments including the first Australian Department of Genetics, the first Department of Microbiology at Birmingham and, perhaps most importantly, the Research School of Biological Sciences of the Australian National University.

After loading stores at Göteborg and Oslo, the expedition sailed from London on 23 November 1949 in the chartered Norwegian sealing vessel Norsel, G. Jakobsen, master. After calling at Cape Town, where P. G. Law of the Australian Department of External Affairs and J. A. King of the Union Weather Bureau of South Africa joined the vessel as observers, the Norsel headed south on 27 December to meet the Norwegian whaling factory Thorshovdi, which was carrying an advanced party of five men, with sixty dogs and some heavy equipment. An unexpectedly wide detour had to be made across the South Atlantic as the Thorshevdi was at that time in the Scotia Sea.

The October 2002 Bali bombing was a catalyst for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to radically alter its approach to the content and dissemination of Australian government travel advisories. Integral to DFAT’s post-Bali strategy was its decision to seek the collaborative support of the Australian outbound travel industry leadership to broaden dissemination of travel advisories to outbound Australian travellers. Although initial contacts between DFAT and the Australian travel industry leaders in early 2003 were contentious, subsequent negotiations resulted in the world’s first signed agreement between a foreign ministry and a national travel industry leadership in June 2003. The initial agreement, the Charter for Safe Travel involved the Australian travel industry’s commitment to disseminate DFAT travel advisories in exchange for a viable consultative role in their content. Australia’s collaborative model was adopted in the UK from 2004, in Canada from 2005 and New Zealand since 2016. Globally, consultation between national travel industry leaders and national foreign ministries is rare, despite the support of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the World Travel and Tourism Council and the Pacific Asia Travel Association. Through participant observation research, in the context of collaboration and stakeholder theories, this article discusses the evolution of a consultative relationship between DFAT and the Australian outbound travel industry leadership and other relevant stakeholders between 2003 and 2017. The observations made in this study reveal that collaborative consultation has achieved positive changes to travel advisories which feature regionally specific, timely and comprehensible content. These qualitative enhancements have been complemented by enhanced dissemination of Australian government travel advisories. Australia’s Consular Consultative Group serves as a working model for similar collaboration, in the interests of global tourism safety.
