Corrosion is the main problem in the processing of crude oil containing soap emulsion by using acetic acid based demulsifier. This study aims to analyze corrosion of API 5L Gr B steel pipe in the solution of 90% brine and 10% crude oil with addition of 2000 ppm of acetic acid based demulsifier at various concentration of amine based organic inhibitor. Corrosion testing was conducted using weight loss coupon. SEM and EDS analysis were performed to investigate corroded specimen. The weight loss results indicate that amine based organic inhibitor made the steel resistant to corrosion with an inhibitor effectiveness of up to 96.67% at a concentration of 40 ppm. SEM observation following with EDS analysis identifying the presence of inhibitor and corrosion product protection layer.

Study about organic inhibitor has been performed to analyze effect of ginger extract concentration (Zingiber officinaler) to corrosion characteristic of API 5L grade steel under 3.5% NaCl and 0.1M HCl. Amount of 100 to 500 ppm inhibitor injected into each solution and electrochemistry tests were performed. Ginger extract has been prepared previously with maceration method and tested with FTIR to identify type compound in it. Tafel test result showed that corrosion rate of steel decreased in accordance with the increase of inhibitors concentration. Corrosion rate decreased to 12.13 mpy at 500 ppm inhibitor under NaCl solution, with efficiency 54.79%. While in HCl, corrosion rate showed similar trend, with corrosion rate 8.19 mpy at 500 ppm, with efficiency 81.66%. EIS result showed that impedance increased with the increase of inhibitors concentration, while FTIR result showed that ginger extract inhibitor contain 2-Methoxy-4-propylphenol which is known as antioxidant compound. According to XRD test, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 compound were identified on steel surface. Ginger extract might worked better in acid environment since it decrease corrosion rate significantly compared to neutral solution.

Combining use electrochemical measurement and weight loss testing, the inhibition efficiency of an organic inhibitor was studied in a chloride contaminated solution. The results showed that the added inhibitor can enhance the corrosion potential and decreased the corrosion current density of rebar. The weight loss testing confirmed that the inhibitor reduced the corrosion rate of rebar by 80% in the chloride containing solution. Moreover, the linear polarization results are consistent with the weight loss testing, which suggests that the former is an effective method to estimate the inhibition efficiency of inhibitors.

There are many methods to prevent the corrosion process. One of them is corrosion inhibitors usage. Inhibitor divided into two types, there are organic inhibitor and non-organic inhibitor. Organic inhibitor could be obtained by extracting some materials which exist in nature. In this research, bio-inhibitors were made from rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) peel, banana (Musa acuminata Colla) peel, mango (Mangifera indica L.) leaves and papaya (Carica papaya)leaves. The determination of corrosion rate used weight loss method. The material of carbon steel ASTM A53 was used in the research. The salinity of artificial seawater was 35 ‰. The results showed that corrosion rate on carbon steel ASTM A53 was 0.2172 mpy at mango leaves and the efficiency of those inhibitor was 44.5%. The corrosion rate carbon steel ASTM A53 was 0.2436 mpy for corrosion rate and 37.8% of inhibitor efficiency when it used papaya leaves as bioinhibitor. Meanwhile, it reached 0.2739 mpy and 0.2812 mpy of corrosion rate for banana peel and rambutan peel, respectively. The efficiency of inhibitor were 30% and 28.2% for banana peel and rambutan peel, respectively. The corrosion rate on carbon steel ASTM A53 without inhibitor was 0.3914 mpy. Based on the microstructure results, all specimens in all variation of treatments showed pitting corrosion and uniform corrosion on specimen. In conclusion, mango leaves, papaya leaves, banana peel and rambutan peel have potentially to be used as bio-inhibitor to decrease the corrosion rate in marine environment.

AbstractMgCl2-KCl binary system has been proposed to be used as high temperature reactor coolant. Due to its relatively low melting point, good heat capacity and excellent thermal stability, this system can also be used in high operation temperature concentrating solar power generation system as heat transfer fluid (HTF). The corrosion behaviors of nickel based alloys in MgCl2-KCl molten salt system at 1,000 °C were determined based on long-term isothermal dipping test. After 500 h exposure tests under strictly maintained high purity argon gas atmosphere, the weight loss and corrosion rate analysis were conducted. Among all the tested samples, Ni-201 demonstrated the lowest corrosion rate due to the excellent resistance of Ni to high temperature element dissolution. Detailed surface topography and corrosion mechanisms were also determined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).

The corrosion of carbon steel in 0.3 and 3% mass hydrochloric acid containing the concentration range 50-800 ppm of Thiourea (Th), Quinoline (Q), Dliethylamine (DEA) and Pyridine (P) were investigated using electrochemical methods. The investigation aims to mention the best organic inhibitor among several compounds to be used in synergic inhibitors. The inhibition efficiencies of thiourea and quinoline are better than pyridine and diethylamine in 0.3 mass% HCl. Thiourea is better than quinoline in 3 mass% HCl and its inhibition efficiency is 83.7%. Generally, the corrosion rate decreases with increasing inhibitors concentration. Diethylamine and pyridine are not effective. The polarization curves indicate that the used inhibitors influenced the cathodic reaction more than the anodic reaction and they are considered as a mixed type inhibitors

One that can be used as an organic inhibitor is bawang tiwai leaves extract. This study used 3.5% NaCl as corrosive media with inhibitor concentration of bawang tiwai leaves extract from 0 ppm to 500 ppm and immersion time from 10 days up to 30 days. The efficiency of inhibition was measured using a weight loss corrosion test, while the corrosion rate was obtained from polarization measurements. The FTIR test results show that the extract contains flavonoid compounds that act as antioxidants and inhibit corrosion. Inhibitory efficiency achieved up to 95.4545% for the addition of 300 ppm inhibitor and 20 days of immersion time. This inhibitory behavior is also supported by polarization measurements where the lowest corrosion rate of 0.00128 mm/year is obtained at the same concentration and immersion time.
