Shape memory composites of trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPI) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) with easily achievable transition temperatures were prepared by a simple physical blending method. Carbon black (CB) was introduced to improve the mechanical properties of the TPI/LDPE composites. The mechanical, cure, thermal and shape memory properties of the TPI/LDPE/CB composites were investigated in this study. In these composites, the crosslinked network generated in both the TPI and LDPE portions acted as a fixed domain, while the crystalline regions of the TPI and LDPE portions acted as a reversible domain in shape memory behavior. We found the mechanical properties of composites were promoted significantly with an increase of CB content, accompanied with the deterioration of shape memory properties of composites. When CB dosage was 5 parts per hundred of rubber composites (phr), best shape memory property of composites was obtained with a shape fixity ratio of 95.1% and a shape recovery ratio of 95.0%.

Preliminary evidence for the occurrence of high-TC superconductivity in alkali-doped organic materials, such as potassium-doped p-terphenyl (KPT), were recently obtained by magnetic susceptibility measurements and by the opening of a large superconducting gap as measured by ARPES and STM techniques. In this work, KPT samples have been synthesized by a chemical method and characterized by low-temperature Raman scattering and resistivity measurements. Here, we report the occurrence of a resistivity drop of more than 4 orders of magnitude at low temperatures in KPT samples in the form of compressed powder. This fact was interpreted as a possible sign of a broad superconducting transition taking place below 90 K in granular KPT. The granular nature of the KPT system appears to be also related to the 20 K broadening of the resistivity drop around the critical temperature.

ABSTRACTWe have studied the electrical transport behavior of sputter deposited Nix(SiO2)100−x thin films between room temperature and 100 mK and, at selected temperatures, in applied magnetic fields up to 6 T. As the Ni concentration x is reduced, the resistivity increases systematically. At a Ni concentration (nominal) of about x–70 atomic percent (38 volume percent) the room temperature coefficient of resistivity changes sign. For Ni concentrations greater than 70 percent the resistance first decreases with temperature then increases logarithmically at, low temperatures. This increase becomes smaller and the resistivity minimum moves to progressively lower temperatures as the Ni concentration increases. In films with less than x–70 percent Ni, the resistivity has a temperature dependence of the form ρ(T)–ρo exp \(To/T)α] between room temperature and about 5 K. The exponent a is about 1/2 and To increases with decreasing Ni content. Below 1 K, however, the resistivity increases much less rapidly, with a temperature dependence independent of Ni concentration. In all films the magnetoresistance is small and negative.

The large drop method was used to investigate the interphase tension of polymer blends of synthetic SKD-35 -butadiene rubber and low-density polyethylene filled with nanosized carbon black DG-100 particles at the boundary with glycerin and air in the temperature range 20–120°C.
