Abstract In India, agricultural wastes such as palm ash and rice husk, which are abundant which have a high potential for usage as usable renewable energy and silica. Silicon carbide (SiC) is utilized for various applications due to its high hardness, compressive strength, and good wear resistance. In this work, a cleaner and green methodology was adopted to produce SiC from various agricultural wastes like peanut shells, rice husks, sugar cane extracts, and corn cob. Pyrolysis experiments were carried out by varying parameters such as heating temperature (600 to 800 0C), heating time (160 to 180 min), and quantity of waste (450 to 550 g) to convert agricultural wastes into powder SiC. X-ray diffraction, Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscope confirms the formation of SiC phase in SiC. The sintering process parameters such as heating rate (5 to 150C/min), cooling rate (5 to 150C/min), and pressure (60 to 80 MPa) were selected for finding fracture toughness of sintered SiC. The process parameters for the pyrolysis and sintering process were optimized by the Taguchi optimization technique. Confirmations tests were conducted with optimum process parameters and the results indicated that confirmations results are correlated with predicted results.

The objective of the present work is to simulate surface roughness in Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine by Fuzzy Modeling of AISI 1045 Steel. To develop the fuzzy model; cutting depth, feed rate and speed are taken as input process parameters. The predicted results are compared with reliable set of experimental data for the validation of fuzzy model. Based upon reliable set of experimental data by Response Surface Methodology twenty fuzzy controlled rules using triangular membership function are constructed. By intelligent model based design and control of CNC process parameters, we can enhance the product quality, decrease the product cost and maintain the competitive position of steel.

Abstract Background Xylanase is one of the widely applied industrial enzymes with diverse applications. Thermostability and alkali tolerance are the two most desirable qualities for industrial applications of xylanase. In this paper, we reveal the statistical Taguchi optimization strategy for maximization of xylanase production. The important process parameters pH, temperature, concentration of wheat bran, and concentration of yeast extract were optimized using the Taguchi L8 orthogonal array where the 4 factors were considered at 2 levels (high and low). Results The optimized conditions given by model were obtained as follows: (i) pH 6, (ii) culture temperature 35 °C, (iii) concentration of xylan 2% w/v, (iv) concentration of wheat bran 2.5% w/v. The production was scaled upto 2.5 L bioreactor using optimized process parameters. A high xylanase titer of 400 U/ml could be achieved in less than 60 h of culture in the reactor. Conclusion Optimization was successful in achieving about threefold increase in the yield of xylanase. The optimized conditions resulted in a successful scale up and enhancement of xylanase production.

Machining of Titanium alloys is difficult due to their chemical and physical properties namely excellent strength, chemical reactivity and low thermal conductivity. Traditional machining of such materials leads to formation of continuous chips and tool bits are subjected to chatter which leads to formation of poor surface on machined surface. In this study, Wire-EDM one of the most popular unconventional machining process which was used to machine such difficult-to-cut materials. Effect of Wire-EDM process parameters namely peak current, pulse-on- time, pulse-off-time, servo voltage on MRRand SR was investigated by Taguchi method. 0.25 mm brass wire was used in this process as electrode material. A surface roughness tester (Surftest 301) was used to measure surface roughness value of the machined work surface. A multi-response optimization technique was then utilized to optimize Wire-EDM process parameters for achieving maximum MRR and minimum SR simultaneously.

Abstract The paper investigates the influence of boron carbide powder (B4C) mixed in dielectric fluid on EDM of Inconel X-750 alloy. The process parameters selected as discharge current (Ip), pulse on time(Ton), pulse off time(Toff), boron carbide(B4C) powder concentration to examine their performance responses on Material Removal Rate (MRR), Surface Roughness(Ra) and Recast Layer Thickness (RLT).In this study, o examine the process parameters which influence the EDM process during machining of Inconel X-750 alloy using combined techniques of Taguchi and similarity to ideal solutions (TOPSIS).Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted on multi-optimization technique of Taguchi-TOPSIS. ANOVA results identified the best process parameters and their percentages. It developed the mathematical equation on Taguchi-TOPSIS performance characteristics results. The multi optimization results indicated that Ip and Toff are more significant parameters; V, and Ton parameters are less significant. Finally, surface structures were studied at optimized EDM conditions by using scanning electron microscope (SEM).

A study was carried out to evaluate how the Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) process parameters affect the temperature distribution in the welding region, the welding forces and the mechanical properties of the joints. An experimental campaign was performed by means of a CNC machine tool and FSSW lap joints on both AA6060 and AA7050 aluminum alloy plates were obtained. Some thermocouples were inserted into the samples to measure the temperatures during FSSW. A set of tests was carried out by varying the process parameters, namely rotational speed, axial feed rate and plunging depth. Axial welding forces were measured during the execution of the experiments by means of a piezoelectric load cell. The mechanical properties of the joints were assessed by executing shear tests on the specimens. A comparison between the quality of the joints obtained on the two materials and a correlation between process parameters and joints properties was found. A FEM model for the simulation of the process was set up using the commercial code Deform 2D. The peculiarity of this model is a 2D approach used for the simulation of a 3D problem, in order to guarantee a very simple and practical model able to achieve results in a very short time. This solution was achieved, based on a specific external routine for the calculation of the developed thermal energy due to the friction between tool and workpiece. The collected experimental data were finally used to validate the model.
