The effect of time of planting and nitrogen fertilizer on yield attributes of Brassica oilseed crops in the Ord River Valley

At Kimberley Research Station in the 1962 dry season, two varieties of Brassica ca.mpe.rtris and one of B. juncea were sown under irrigation at four dates from May 1 to July 2 with six nitrogen fertilizer treatments. Seed yield was reduced with later date of sowing. There was a small linear response to nitrogen fertilizer up to 80 lb an acre nitrogen. Applying half the nitrogen at sowing and half at budding showed no advantage over applying all the nitrogen at sowing. Oil content was also reduced with later date of sowing. Nitrogen fertilizer at the highest level reduced oil content slightly. Although seed and oil yield were highest at the first sowing, dry matter and nitrogen yield of tops were highest at the second sowing. The fall in seed and oil yield with later date of sowing appeared to be associated more with rising temperature during the seed maturation period than with general vegetative performance.

A field trial was conducted at Abu-Ghraib research station , Baghdad , Iraq . The objectives were to study the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and planting space on the performance of rape seed. A split-plot in a randomized complete of block design with three replications were used. Five levels of nitrogen fertilizer ( 120,160,200,240,280 Kg / ha ) were assigned to main plots, where as planting space in sub-plots. The result obtained confirmed that 280,240 kg / ha nitrogen maximized seed yield 1.830 , 1.773 ton/ha, oil yield,0.843,0.824 ton/ha .Results showed that planting space 30 cm produced the highest seed yield 1.90 ton / ha and oil yield , 0.884 ton / ha . Interactions between nitrogen fertilizer and planting space were also detected plants gave the highest seed yield 2.253 ton / ha and oil yield 1.045 ton /ha that 280kg/ha nitrogen ,30cm planting space and produced more oil content 48.54 % that 120 kg / ha nitrogen compared with high nitrogen fertilizer levels .

The objectives were to study the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and planting space on the performance of rape seed. A split-plot in a randomized complete of block design with three replications were used. Five levels of nitrogen fertilizer ( 120,160,200,240,280 Kg / ha ) were assigned to main plots, where as planting space in sub-plots. The result obtained confirmed that 280,240 kg / ha nitrogen maximized seed yield 1.830 , 1.773 ton/ha, oil yield,0.843,0.824 ton/ha .Results showed that planting space 30 cm produced the highest seed yield 1.90 ton / ha and oil yield , 0.884 ton / ha . Interactions between nitrogen fertilizer and planting space were also detected plants gave the highest seed yield 2.253 ton / ha and oil yield 1.045 ton /ha that 280kg/ha nitrogen ,30cm planting space and produced more oil content 48.54 % that 120 kg / ha nitrogen compared with high nitrogen fertilizer levels .

A field experiment on influence of sulphur and potassium levels on yield and yield attributes of sesame was conducted in Agronomy Research Farm, University of Agriculture Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) during Kharif season, 2017. Varying levels of sulphur (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg ha-l) and potassium (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg ha-l) were applied to experimental plots. The results revealed that sesame significantly responded to the application of sulphur and potassium up to 50 kg ha-l for growth, quality, yield and yield attributes of sesame. The taller plant (76.83 cm), maximum number of branches per plant (3.87), more number of capsules per plant (43.82), more number of seeds per capsules (59.36), maximum seed yield (673 kg ha-1), maximum stover yield (1078 kg ha-1), more oil content (48.76 %) and maximum oil yield (291.7 kg ha-1) were noticed where 50 kg ha-1 sulphur treated. On the contrary taller plant (76.97 cm), maximum number of branches per plant (3.93), more number of capsules per plant (42.77), more number of seeds per capsules (59.36), maximum seed yield (617 kg ha-1), maximum stover yield (1043 kg ha-1), more oil content (48.65 %) and maximum oil yield (286.6 kg ha-1) were recorded from 50 kg ha-1 potassium treatments.Res. A field experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station of BARI, Gazipur for two consecutive years 2010-11 and 2011-12 with 30 varieties/ genotypes of rapeseed-mustard under three dates of sowing viz., 25 November, 5 December, and 15 December to determine changes in crop phenology, growth and yield of mustard genotypes under late sown condition when the crop faced high temperature. Days to flowering and maturity were different at different planting times. Date of sowing significantly influenced plant height, siliquae/plant, seeds/siliqua, seed yield, and oil content of seed in both the years. The highest seed yield (1310 and 1535 kg/ha) was obtained from the first planting (25 November) in both the years, which was significantly different from two other dates of sowing. Yield and yield attributes of different varieties varied significantly. Among the varieties, BARI Sarisha-16 of Brassica juncea gave significantly the highest seed yield (1495 and 1415 kg/ha), which was statistically identical to BJDH-11, BJDH-12, BJDH-05, BJDH-20, and BARI Sarisha-6 and significantly different from all other varieties. Interaction effect of variety and sowing date significantly influenced plant height, number of siliquae per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, seed yield, and strover yield. The highest seed yield (1758 and 1825 kg/ha) were recorded from BJDH-11 and BARI Sarisha-16 of Brassica juncea at 25 November planting and BJDH-11 produced the highest yield at 15 December in both the years. The maximum strover yield (3758 and 3825 kg/ha) were obtained from BJDH-11 and BARI Sarisha-16 of Brassica juncea at 25 November planting during 2010-11 and 2011-12. The highest oil content of seeds (44.4 % and 45.9%) were obtained from the seed of BARI Sarisha-6 and BARI Sarisha-14 at 25 November planting in both the years. At Kimberley Research Station, three-quarters, one-half, and one-quarter of the leaves of drill-sown plots of irrigated safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) were removed at the late elongation stage, starting from the base of the plant, to simulate attack by the larvae of Prodenia litura F. Increasing severity of leaf removal had a progressively detrimental effect on seed yield and oil content ; however, removal of three-quarters of the leaves only reduced the yield of oil per acre by half.

Sulphur is a component of plant amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and enzyme structures which influence the productivity of oil seed and total oil content. The experiment was conducted to find out the effect of sulphur on the seed yield and oil content of sesame in Bangladesh. The experiment comprised three varieties of sesame viz. Binatil-2, Binatil-3 and BARI Til-4 and six levels of sulphur (S) viz. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg S ha–1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Dry matter production, crop characters, yield components, seed yield and oil content were significantly influenced by variety, level of sulphur and their interaction. The highest dry matter production plant–1 at 50 DAS (17.56 g), plant height (101.3 cm), number of branches plant–1 (3.66),  number of pods plant-1 (41.56), number of seeds pod-1 (58.83),  seed yield    (747.2 kg ha-1), stover yield (2243.0 kg ha–1) and oil content (40.03%) were obtained in BARI Til-4 while the corresponding lowest values of all parameters were recorded in Binatil-2. In case of sulphur application, the highest dry matter production plant–1 at 50 DAS (20.81 g), plant height (109.7 cm), number of branches plant–1 (3.87),  number of pods plant–1 (46.13),  number of seeds pod-1 (56.67),  seed yield (800.0 kg ha–1), stover yield (2787 kg ha–1 ) and oil content (43.97%) were obtained when crop was fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 while the lowest seed yield (502.2 kg ha–1), stover yield (1550.0 kg ha–1) and oil content (32.80%) were obtained in control (0 kg S ha–1). BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 produced the highest dry matter plant–1 at 50 DAS (24.80 g), number of pods plant–1 (51.13), seeds pod–1 (62.0) and seed yield (1011.0 kg ha–1). The highest oil content (43.97%) was also recorded in BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1, which was as good as that of BARI Til-4 fertilized with 40 kg S ha–1. Therefore, BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 can be considered as a promising practice in respect of seed yield and oil content of sesame in Bangladesh. J. Bangladesh Agril. To compare the effects of varying seeding rate on the agronomic performance, phenology and seed quality of hybrid and conventional summer rape cultivars, four hybrid and two conventional summer rape cultivars were seeded at 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0 and 9.0 kg ha−1 at two locations for 3 yr. The hybrid cultivars were, very importantly, 24% higher yielding and produced 50% more total dry matter than the conventional cultivars. The hybrid cultivars were, on average, 1.3% lower in seed oil content, 1.0% higher in seed protein content and equal in sum of oil and protein in the seed compared with the conventional cultivars. The hybrid cultivars were on average, 1.3 d later to 50% flowering and 1.1 d later to maturity than the average for the conventional cultivars, (i.e., equal or earlier to flowering and maturity than Regent). The hybrid cultivars were also 3.9% lower in harvest index and 1.3 ppm lower in chlorophyll content than the conventional cultivars. In spite of these differences, there were no significant cultivar-by-seeding-rate interactions, indicating that the hybrid and conventional cultivars responded similarly to varying seeding rate. Lodging, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, harvest index, survival, oil content and protein content displayed significant linear responses to varying seeding rate. Stand at maturity, seed yield and total dry matter production displayed significant linear and quadratic responses to varying seeding rate. Varying seeding rate had no effect on seed formation period, the sum of oil and protein content, or chlorophyll content. A seeding rate of 6 kg ha−1 maximized seed yield for both hybrid and conventional summer rape cultivars.Key words: Brassica napus, canola, seed quality, agronomy, phenology

Field experiments were conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Jessore during rabi (winter) seasons of 1999-2001 to study the tillage and mulching effects on conservation of residual soil moisture, yield attributes and yield of mustard (cv. Daulat.). Three different tillage methods, namely minimum, reduced and conventional tillage were used in the main plots and three different mulch materials, namely rice straw, water hyacinth, black polythene including no mulch were used in the sup-plots. It was observed that reduced tillage and polythene mulch or rice straw mulch conserve more moisture than other tillage methods and mulch application. Tillage practice significantly influenced the dry matter, yield and yield components of mustard. Reduced tillage gave consistently the highest seed yield (969 kg/ha), while minimum tillage gave the lowest seed yield (92 kg/ha). Mulching also resulted in better crop growth and increased yield. Significantly higher seed yield (1164 kg/ha) was recorded from black polythene mulch followed by rice straw mulch (1089 kg/ha). The yield of mustard was obtained due to the interaction effects on reduced tillage and polythene mulch followed by conventional tillage and polythene mulch, which was found superior to all other treatments. Results revealed that polythene mulch or rice straw mulch accompanied by reduced tillage was economically profitable for mustard cultivation/production under rainfed condition. <p><span>A field experiment was conducted to evaluate yield and some qualitative characteristics of four cultivars of sweet basil treated with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The experiments were located on the Agricultural Research Station of Khorramabad, Iran, during the 2016-2017 growing season. Treatments were arranged in factorial split-plot-in time in randomized complete block design with three replications. Experimental treatments were four cultivars of sweet basil (<em>Ocimum basilicum</em> ‘Italian Large Leaf’, <em>O. basilicum</em> ‘Mobarakeh’, <em>O. basilicum</em> ‘Cinnamon’ and <em>O. basilicum </em>‘Thai’), three levels of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 100 and 200 kg ha<sup>-1</sup> urea) and three harvests. The highest total dry mass (3482.4 kg ha<sup>-1</sup>) was related to ‘Italian Large Leaf’ with the application of 200 kg ha<sup>-1</sup> urea at the second harvest. The maximum (26.79 kg ha<sup>-1</sup>) essential oil yield belonged to 100 kg ha<sup>-1 </sup>urea. The highest concentrations of main constituents of essential oil, except methyl chavicol, 1,8-cineole and methyl cinnamate were obtained by control (without nitrogen fertilizer). Italian Large Leaf cultivar and application of 100 kg ha<sup>-1</sup> urea are recommended to access an acceptable agricultural yield and essential oil yield in sweet basil under the environmental condition similar to Khorramabad</span></p>

An experiment was carried-out with forty-eight hybrids of pigeonpea and two checks for nine characters at Agricultural Research Station, Tandur (Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University). Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the hybrids for all the nine characters studied. The results of genetic parameters revealed that, high genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic coefficients of variations (PCV) were observed for seed yield and number of pods per plant. Six characters viz., number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod length, test weight and seed yield exhibited high heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean which suggested that these traits were amenable for further improvement following simple selection methods. Character association revealed significant positive association of seed yield with plant height,number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and pod length. Based on divergence studies, the hybrids were grouped into nine clusters in Tocher’s method, cluster II (14 hybrids) was the largest followed by cluster I (13), cluster VI (9), cluster IV (6), cluster IX (4) and the remaining clusters were solitary (III, V, VII and VIII). Out of the nine characters studied, seed yield, days to 50% flowering, test weight and plant height contributed 85.62 per cent of the total divergence and these traits were found to be important factors for genetic differentiation in the hybrids. The overall results of the study revealed that, hybrids under cluster IV and VIII and cluster VII and VIII had maximum and minimum inter cluster distances respectively and possessing high genetic diversity for the characters viz. plant height, number of branches per plant, number of seeds per pod and yield.
