When deer must die: large uncertainty surrounds changes in deer abundance achieved by helicopter- and ground-based hunting in New Zealand forests

Context When environmental, economic and/or social effects of wildlife are considered undesirable and need to be reduced, managers require knowledge of the effectiveness of candidate control techniques, particularly the relationship between control effort and change in abundance. Aims We evaluated the effects of control on the abundances of introduced red deer (Cervus elaphus scoticus) and sika deer (Cervus nippon) at three New Zealand forest sites (two North Island, one South Island) in an 8-year adaptive-management experiment. Methods We identified paired areas of 3600 ha at each site that were as similar as possible in geology, physical environments and forest composition and applied deer control (helicopter- and/or ground-based hunting) to a randomly selected member of each pair. The abundances of deer were monitored in each treatment and non-treatment area for up to 7 years by using faecal pellet counts on 50 randomly located transects. Key results The difference between deer abundances in the treatment and non-treatment areas was significantly negative at one site, significantly positive at one site and indistinguishable at the other site. Faecal pellet abundances declined with increasing helicopter-based hunting effort but did not change with increasing ground-based hunting effort. There was evidence that aerially sown 1080 baits used for possum control in two treatment areas reduced deer abundances. Conclusions The substantial uncertainty surrounding the relationships between deer control effort and changes in deer abundance means that managers cannot assume that the environmental, economic and/or social problems caused by deer will be alleviated with the quantum of control effort applied in the present study. Implications Reducing the abundances of deer in forests may require substantially more control effort than is currently believed.

Abstract Background As a famous animal-derived herbal medicine, the pharmacological functions of velvet antler are widely recognized in the world. However, there are still great limitations on quality standard and control system of velvet antler. Methods In this research, microscopic observation, delayed luminescence (DL) and chemical analysis were used to evaluate the four grades of velvet antler slices obtained from Cervus nippon Temminck and Cervus elaphus Linnaeu. In addition, those three measurement platforms have been used to compared the two of the four grades among Cervus nippon Temminck, Cervus elaphus Linnaeu and Rangifer tarandus. Results We assessed the quality grades of velvet antler slices by using microscopic observation, delayed luminescence and chemical analysis. These techniques are able to indicate the difference of different grades of velvet antler slices to a certain extent, and has their own advantages, respectively. Conclusion As a new, rapid and systemic tool, DL provides a technique for studying the overall property of different grades of velvet antler slices, and the integrated assessment by measuring microscopic observation, DL and chemical components may provide a novel means to measure animal-derived herbal quality control.

A New empirical model has been developed for predicting liquefaction-induced lateral spreading displacement and is a function of response spectral displacements and geotechnical parameters. Different from the earlier model of Zhang and Zhao (2005), the application of which was limited to Japan and California, the new model can potentially be applied anywhere if ground shaking can be estimated (by using local strong-motion attenuation relations). The new model is applied in New Zealand where the response spectral displacement is estimated using New Zealand strong-motion attenuation relations (McVerry et al. 2006). The accuracy of the new model is evaluated by comparing predicted lateral displacements with those which have been measured from aerial photos or the width of ground cracks at the Landing Road bridge, the James Street loop, the Whakatane Pony Club and the Edgecumbe road and rail bridges sites after the 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake. Results show that most predicted errors (defined as the ratio of the difference between the measured and predicted lateral displacements to the measured one) from the new model are less than 40%. When compared with earlier models (Youd et al. 2002, Zhang and Zhao 2005), the new model provides the lowest mean errors.

<p>Research points to a robust negative relationship between average levels of subjective wellbeing and the distribution of subjective wellbeing. The fact that our wellbeing falls as wellbeing distributions widen suggests we care about inequalities in the lives of others. Central to this relationship is the role of place and human geography. The literature relating wellbeing to inequality in wellbeing is confined almost exclusively to inter-country comparisons. Virtually no attention has been paid to the relationship between wellbeing and inequality within countries - at the level of regions and below. The aim of this thesis is to test the generality of the inter-country evidence in the sub-national context.  I present four hypotheses which I test on three separate cross-sectional surveys: the New Zealand Quality of Life Survey, The New Zealand General Social Survey and the survey of Māori wellbeing, Te Kupenga. I follow the literature in using the standard deviation of wellbeing as a measure of wellbeing inequality. In each case the negative relationship between individual wellbeing and wellbeing inequality is clearly identifiable. The wellbeing effect of living in a place one standard deviation higher than another is roughly equivalent to the difference between the wellbeing of someone who is fully employed and someone who is unemployed and looking for work. Clearly we are highly sensitive to disparities in the subjective wellbeing of those around us.  I conduct several tests of the psychological drivers that lie behind the wellbeing response to local inequality in wellbeing. The first tests fairness perceptions, and finds sensitivity to wellbeing inequality to be higher among those who do not believe society is intrinsically fair. My test of altruism, while not as convincing empirically, suggests altruistic people may also be less affected by local wellbeing inequality. Both conclusions are consistent with the implied causation running from inequality to wellbeing.  While an important addition to the wellbeing literature, the more important implication of my findings is political. As the New Zealand Local Government Act comes up for renewal, the evidence I have assembled strongly supports providing local government with a clear purpose and the necessary funding to address the underlying causes of local inequalities in wellbeing. On empirical grounds alone, reducing wellbeing inequality is likely to make us all much happier.</p>

Abstract Background: The traditional medical practices of the Daur region are an important element in Chinese ethnomedicinal knowledge. However, relatively little recording of traditional Daur medicine (TDM) has been carried out. As it is gradually being replaced by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and modern medicine, further research is urgently needed. Methods: We collected ethnobotany and ethnozoology data about their local name, parts used and diseases to be treated, dosage, and route for administration through semi-structured interviews with 114 informants (18 sessions), focus group discussions (6 sessions), and extensive literature reviews. Medicinal samples and specimens were collected during field investigations from June 2015 to October 2018. The diseases and ailments reported as being treated were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases 11 th (ICD-11). The expression correlation of medicine classification, medicine, and disease was assessed using Cytoscape 3.6.1 software. Quantitative indices such as informant consensus factor (ICF) and use value (UV) were used to evaluate the importance of ethnomedicinal data. Results: We documented 30 plant species (from 19 families) and 21 animal species (from 11 families). In the past, the majority of plant species were collected from natural habitats, but now they are mainly cultivated. The most widely utilized plants were herbs (21 species), followed by shrubs (4), trees (3), and fungus (2). The most utilized groups of animals were mammals (14 species), followed by birds (5), amphibians (1), and reptiles (1). Medicines were mostly administered orally (43) but were also applied externally (11) or delivered via both routes (9). Informants indicated that medicines were prepared via decoction (21), grinding (11), boiling (10), extraction (8), and burning (7). Medicines were taken as a drink (37), eaten (16), or made into pills and powders (7), but could also be administered as an ointment/wash (6), wrap/dressing (5), in the nose, eyes, and mouth (4), or as a fumigate (2). The TDMs investigated in this study treated 76 human diseases or ailments classified under 13 disease categories, based on the ICD-11. The highest ICF (1.00) was reported for neoplasms and visual system diseases and childbirth or the puerperium, followed by injury, poisoning, or other diseases resulting from external causes (0.92), and symptoms, signs or clinical findings, not elsewhere classified (0.82). The most used medicinal species were Cervus elaphus , Cervus nippon , Capreolus , Gallus , Canis lupus familiaris , Betula platyphylla , and Artemisia integrifolia . Conclusions: A substantial body of ethnobotanical and ethnozoological knowledge could lead to the development of new medicines. Therefore, research into Daur ethnic medicines is urgently required The current research can make an important contribution to the body of knowledge about the national medicine of the Daur people. This is particularly important because the younger generation is not interested in learning and preserving their traditional medical practices. The information documented in the present study will provide a useful basis for future investigations into the ethnopharmacological and traditional knowledge of the Daur region.

The main result of this study is the development of attenuation expressions for peak ground accelerations (PGAs) in New Zealand earthquakes, in terms of magnitude Mw and shortest distance from the source. Other factors which are modelled are depth, focal mechanism, ground class and tectonic type of earthquake i.e. crustal, interface or dipping slab. As well as being implied in the source distance, the substantial effect of depth is modelled well with a separate linear depth term. For crustal events, focal mechanisms which are predominantly reverse are found to cause PGAs that are 28 percent stronger on average than for other mechanisms. PGAs at soil sites (ie those having soil deposits >3 m thick) are found to be 53 percent stronger on average than at other (ie rock) sites, but the difference between PGAs on rock and soil sites in large amplitude shaking remains uncertain, ie near the source o f events of Mw ≥ 7. Earthquakes occurring on the interface between the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates give rise to smaller PGAs than do crustal or slab events of the same magnitude, depth and distance. Comparisons are made between our New Zealand model and some for Europe, Japan and the Western USA.

This research investigated the performance of the red, octagonal Vienna Convention traffic ‘STOP’ sign as a front of pack (FoP) warning nutritional label. While the Vienna Convention traffic light system is an established FoP label, the potential of the ‘STOP’ sign in the role has not been investigated. The performance of the ‘STOP’ label was compared with that of a single star (low nutritional value) Australasian Health Star Rating (HSR) label using a fractionally replicated Latin square design. The labels were presented on choice diads of cold breakfast cereal packets. The sample of 240 adolescents aged 16–18 was drawn from a secondary school in the South Island of New Zealand. A large and significant main effect was observed at the p < 0.01 level for the difference between the ’STOP’ sign and the control condition (no nutritional FoP label), and at p < 0.05 for the difference between the HSR and the ‘STOP’ label. There was no significant difference between the HSR FoP and the control condition. A significant non-additivity (interaction) (p < 0.01) was also observed via the fractional replication. The results indicate that the Vienna Convention ‘STOP’ sign is worthy of further research with regard to its potential as an FoP nutritional label.

New Zealand deer farming centres on the production of meat and velvet antler. Velvet antler removal is a painful procedure and currently, New Zealand Animal Welfare regulations dictate surgical removal of velvet antlers under lignocaine anaesthesia. To improve our knowledge on the efficacy and duration of other local anaesthetics to mitigate pain after antler removal, it is important to accurately assess and quantify pain arising from antler removal. Therefore, the current study was designed to validate mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) testing using a Wagner hand-held algometer, and to apply this methodology to assess the efficacy and duration of action of articaine for antler removal in deer. Baseline force (N) required to elicit the nociceptive response was recorded in 40 yearling male red deer on three alternate days. Ten of the 40 animals were selected for antler removal after administration of 4% articaine hydrochloride as a ring block. The duration of analgesic efficacy of articaine was assessed by algometry across 5 time points. There was a significant difference in MNTs among the three days (day 3 versus day 1 (p < 0.0001), day 2 versus day 1 (p < 0.0001), and day 1 versus day 2 (p < 0.01)). Positive correlations were observed between weight, antler length and thresholds. The MNT values remained above 20N for 6 h after removal of velvet antlers under the articaine ring block. This study provides valuable information about the use of MNT in red deer. These findings lay a foundation for future studies in the topics of peri-operative and postoperative pain management in deer antler removal, and a possible alternative use for articaine.

The X-ray attenuation (Sedigraph) method for particle-size analysis is known to consistently estimate a finer size distribution than the pipette method. The objectives of this study were to compare the two methods, and to explore the reasons for their divergence. The methods are compared using two data sets from measurements made independently in two New Zealand laboratories, on two different sets of New Zealand soils, covering a range of textures and parent materials. The Sedigraph method gave systematically greater mass percentages at the four measurement diameters (20, 10, 5 and 2 �m). For one data set, the difference between clay (<2 �m) percentages from the two methods is shown to be positively correlated (R2 = 0.625) with total iron content of the sample, for all but one of the soils. This supports a novel hypothesis that the typically greater concentration of Fe (a strong X-ray absorber) in smaller size fractions is the major factor causing the difference. Regression equations are presented for converting the Sedigraph data to their pipette equivalents.
