Deer are among the world’s most successful invasive mammals and can have substantial deleterious impacts on natural and agricultural ecosystems. Six species have established wild populations in Australia, and the distributions and abundances of some species are increasing. Approaches to managing wild deer in Australia are diverse and complex, with some populations managed as ‘game’ and others as ‘pests’. Implementation of cost-effective management strategies that account for this complexity is hindered by a lack of knowledge of the nature, extent and severity of deer impacts. To clarify the knowledge base and identify research needs, we conducted a systematic review of the impacts and management of wild deer in Australia. Most wild deer are in south-eastern Australia, but bioclimatic analysis suggested that four species are well suited to the tropical and subtropical climates of northern Australia. Deer could potentially occupy most of the continent, including parts of the arid interior. The most significant impacts are likely to occur through direct effects of herbivory, with potentially cascading indirect effects on fauna and ecosystem processes. However, evidence of impacts in Australia is largely observational, and few studies have experimentally partitioned the impacts of deer from those of sympatric native and other introduced herbivores. Furthermore, there has been little rigorous testing of the efficacy of deer management in Australia, and our understanding of the deer ecology required to guide deer management is limited. We identified the following six priority research areas: (i) identifying long-term changes in plant communities caused by deer; (ii) understanding interactions with other fauna; (iii) measuring impacts on water quality; (iv) assessing economic impacts on agriculture (including as disease vectors); (v) evaluating efficacy of management for mitigating deer impacts; and (vi) quantifying changes in distribution and abundance. Addressing these knowledge gaps will assist the development and prioritisation of cost-effective management strategies and help increase stakeholder support for managing the impacts of deer on Australian ecosystems.

When consumers have heterogeneous perceptions about product quality, traditional parametric methods may not provide accurate marginal valuation estimates of a product's characteristics. A quantile regression framework can be used to estimate valuations of product characteristics when quality perceptions are not homogeneous. Semiparametric quantile regressions provide identification and quantification of heterogeneous marginal valuation effects across a conditional price distribution. Using purchase price data from a bull auction, we show that there are nonconstant marginal valuations of bull carcass and growth traits. Improved understanding of product characteristic valuations across differentiated market segments can help producers develop more cost-effective management strategies.

Introduction: The objective of this study is to develop evidence-based guidelines that recommend effective, safe and cost-effective thromboprophylaxis strategies in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted to address key questions relating to thromboprophylaxis in SCI. Based on GRADE (Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation), a strong recommendation is worded as “we recommend,” whereas a weaker recommendation is indicated by “we suggest.” Results: Based on conclusions from the systematic review and expert panel opinion, the following recommendations were developed: (1) “We suggest that anticoagulant thromboprophylaxis be offered routinely to reduce the risk of thromboembolic events in the acute period after SCI;” (2) “We suggest that anticoagulant thromboprophylaxis, consisting of either subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin or fixed, low-dose unfractionated heparin (UFH) be offered to reduce the risk of thromboembolic events in the acute period after SCI. Given the potential for increased bleeding events with the use of adjusted-dose UFH, we suggest against this option;” (3) “We suggest commencing anticoagulant thromboprophylaxis within the first 72 hours after injury, if possible, in order to minimize the risk of venous thromboembolic complications during the period of acute hospitalization.” Conclusions: These guidelines should be implemented into clinical practice in patients with SCI to promote standardization of care, decrease heterogeneity of management strategies and encourage clinicians to make evidence-informed decisions.

Recent studies have helped to define the population groups at risk for these infections, as well as the most cost-effective management strategies. This article will discuss aspects of initial diagnosis and subsequent management of different high risk groups.

Variations in area burnt by fire are governed by four processes: biomass growth, availability to burn, fire weather and ignitions. Insight into these how these processes are shaped by biophysical and human influences is required to underpin the development of effective management strategies. Patterns of natural and arson ignitions were examined within the densely populated Sydney region of south-eastern Australia to determine the extent to which management can alter the risk of ignition. Arson ignitions were more likely on ridges in association with human infrastructure, i.e. roads and houses. Lightning ignitions also occurred more frequently on ridges, but at greater distances from human infrastructure. These patterns are consistent with those reported in studies from forested regions in the northern hemisphere. Fuel age had a variable effect with lightning more likely in older fuels (>25 years) and arson more likely in younger fuels (<10 years). Probability of both ignition types increased under more severe fire weather. Climate change is predicted to increase the severity of fire weather and is therefore likely to result in an increase in ignition frequency in the Sydney Basin. Urban expansion is also likely to have significant effects on ignitions and resultant risks to people and property via an increase in the probability of arson ignitions.

Citrus huanglongbing (HLB), or greening, is the most destructive citrus disease worldwide and is threatening the sustainability of the industry in major citrus-growing regions. Various treatments have been proposed in the literature to manage the disease. We review such literature and conduct an economic analysis based on the reported treatment effects on fruit yield and quality to identify cost-effective management strategies. Our results suggest that, among the treatments we reviewed, broad-spectrum insecticides provide the only cost-effective strategy for mitigating the impact of the disease. Our findings and discussion should help growers, policymakers, and other stakeholders make informed decisions in the search for effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly treatments and policies against HLB.

<b>Background: </b>Time-in-range is a key glycaemic metric, and comparisons of management technologies for this outcome are critical to guide device selection. <p><b> </b></p> <p><b>Purpose: </b>We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare and rank technologies for time in glycaemic ranges.</p> <p> </p> <p><b>Data sources: </b>We searched All Evidenced Based Medicine Reviews, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, MEDLINE In-Process and other non-indexed citations, PROSPERO, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science until 24 April, 2019.</p> <p> </p> <p><b>Study selection: </b>We included randomised controlled trials <u>></u>2 weeks duration comparing technologies for management of type 1 diabetes in adults (<u>></u>18 years of age), excluding pregnant women. </p> <p> </p> <p><b>Data extraction: </b>Data were extracted using a predefined template. Outcomes were percent time with sensor glucose levels 3.9–10.0mmol/l (70–180mg/dL), >10.0mmol/L (180mg/dL), and <3.9mmol/L (70mg/dL). </p> <p><b> </b></p> <p><b>Data synthesis: </b>We identified 16,772 publications, of which 14 eligible studies compared eight technologies comprising 1,043 participants. Closed loop systems lead to greater percent time-in-range than any other management strategy and was 17.85 (95% predictive interval [PrI] 7.56–28.14) higher than usual care of multiple daily injections with capillary glucose testing. Closed loop systems ranked best for percent time-in-range or above range utilising surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA–98.5 and 93.5 respectively). Closed loop systems also ranked highly for time below range (SUCRA–62.2). </p> <p><b> </b></p> <p><b>Limitations: </b>Overall risk of bias ratings were moderate for all outcomes. Certainty of evidence was very low.</p> <p><b> </b></p> <p><b>Conclusions: </b>In the first integrated comparison of multiple management strategies considering time-in-range, we found that the efficacy of closed loop systems appeared better than all other approaches. </p>
