The pragmatics of learning by doing

Based on his experience as an educator, the author criticizes current methods and philosophies of learning and teaching. Learning should be geared towards practice (‘learning by doing’); teaching should be about exciting students and helping them perform meaningful tasks, rather than having them passively absorb knowledge that they cannot see the use of. Feedback from former students allows the author to posit a few simple rules for teaching and learning, and identify some of the major (though universally accepted) misconceptions about the role of the teacher and the nature of the learning process. A pragmatics of learning starts from naturally occurring learning situations and emphasizes teaching that is based on the learner’s own experiences, where mistakes are seen as a major source of insight into what is needed in order to achieve success in education and to remake the broken educational system that we are trying to cope with in today’s schools.

<p>The publication reflects the qualitative development of construction students' ecological attitude in learning and teaching process in a vocational school. By facilitating the teaching and learning process, developing the content of education, introducing in teaching ecologically-oriented forms of work, methods, approaches and instruments; using the environment as a pedagogical tool and highlighting the important role of teacher as an ecological person in the accentuation of teaching content as students understand it. The author emphasizes the impact of the components of ecological education in the promotion of the reflection on the most essential attitude criteria – knowledge, skills and behaviour. Applying quantitative and qualitative research, the author sums up the experimantally obtained results showing that by the introduction of the components of ecological education, it is possible to foster the development of an ecological person.</p>

The two very prominent methodologies are GTM and CLT in the education system in teaching & learning English in Bangladesh. To show the importance of the combination of these two phenomenal methods is the purpose of this paper. In Bangladesh GTM is commonly used for a long time, and at present CLT is also a very famous method. In this paper, the two methods are elaborated clearly in effective teaching and learning of English in Bangladesh. The study focuses on GTM and CLT in respects of achieving four skills, accuracy/fluency, teaching-learning process, handling the students’ feelings and emotions, the role of the native language of students, the language skills that are emphasized, and the way of teacher’s response to students’ errors. Though CLT is the more beneficial method nowadays GTM also has some positive things to offer. Based on the data and findings, this paper has also presented some suggestions for effective teaching and learning of English in Bangladesh.

Patients and service users have a well-established role in teaching and learning on professional qualifying programmes such as such as social work and nursing. However, the role of people with dementia in contributing to educational initiatives at higher educational level remains under explored. Four people with dementia were recruited as Expert by Lived Experience Tutors for the Foundation Degree in Dementia Studies at a University in the United Kingdom. They met students regularly to support their learning. We were interested in researching whether and how this enhanced the ability of students to enable people to live well with dementia. However, we also discovered that the initiative gave insight into psychosocial aspects of dementia, and a new opportunity to explore personhood, co-production and social citizenship. That is the focus of this article.

The paper examines the integration of technology into various language learning aspects, mainly how technology can enhance language learning and teaching. This paper is a position of contextual and holistic approach, and on the principles of constructivist theory examines the role of natural resources in the teaching and learning process. In the center of interest by the possibility of establishing a partnership relationship with nature in the process of teaching and learning, where nature appears as an asset, source and target classes. The aim is to get through the display and analysis of theoretical approaches to nature as a context for learning and teaching perceive from the perspective of affirmation contextual, holistic, active, investigative approach to teaching. This will promote new teaching strategies in order to change the classical approach to teaching and learning process and open up new opportunities to increase the share of after-school space in order to create teaching situations. Results of the analysis of theoretical starting points in particular knowledge of the value of contextual and holistic learning, achieving partnership with nature, in favor of modern theories in which it promotes active student positions close to reality in the process of construction of knowledge systems.

The role of memory as part of a person’s mental activity has long been recognized by psychologists, methodologists and teachers as one of the basic elements of learning and teaching. It has been right in the center of the teaching/learning process. Thus, an effective and efficient memory is of paramount importance for students as memory techniques can facilitate and improve the teaching/learning process. In the present paper the authors suggest some strategies and techniques that will undoubtedly go a long way in helping learners improve their memory in terms of encoding, storing and retrieving information.

Many researches has been conducted for the need to increase critical thinking of students (in (different fields, (also many researches has been done on the importance and the role of critical thinking for students achievements. In this context this requires a critical approach. To achieve this should be used effective teaching methods that develop critical thinking and also facilitate and enhance the learning of students and their performance in general, making them able to solving problems in their fields. A visualization approach increase communication, increase critical thinking and provides analytical approach to various problems. Therefore, this research is aimed to investigate visualization for the purpose of examining its role in developing critical thinking. In order to achieve this it was made an experiment for the use of visualization and from this experimentation are extracted the results of the effect of using the visualization for the aspect of developing and increasing critical thinking. The results which are taken from this research highlight the positive effect that the use of visualization in teaching and learning process has in developing the critical thinking of students and their overall performance. The results also shows that the visualization motivates students to learn, making them more cooperative and developing their skills for critical approach. Laboratory training and exercises provide hands-on experience to the students. However, the limitations in the laboratory facilities in the engineering colleges may affect the teaching and learning process of the future engineers. Hence, Government of India has started an initiative called Virtual Lab to overcome this issue. The premier institutions in India were funded and these institutes are the nodal centre in providing virtual lab facilities to colleges which do not have sophisticated laboratory facilities. The advancement in IT and internet facilities can no more hamper students and researchers in enhancing their skills and knowledge. Also, in a country such as India, costly instruments and equipment need to be shared with fellow researchers to the greatest extent possible. This chapter discusses and highlights the Virtual Lab initiatives and implementations.

Background: Learning by doing, also known as experiential learning, is a method when the learners actively participate in the learning process. The role of the teacher is to guide and facilitate the learners by providing a variety of activities and teaching materials that enhance inquiry in the classroom.Research purposes: The purpose of this study was aimed to investigate the impact of learning by doing applications to enhance students‟ inquiry in the classroom.Research methods: The present study involved forty-six (46) teachers across disciplines. Literature review, teachers‟ questionnaires, and open-ended questions through interviews were used for this study.Research results: The finding showed that most of the respondents understood and agreed about the impact of learning by doing application in the classroom and have been applied the method in their teaching and learning process. Some strategies, strengths, and possible challenges were shared during the interview. Hence, the result emphasized that the method enhances active participation that promotes inquiry.Conclusion: Most of teachers are familiar and consistently implement the learning by doing strategies to extend inquiry in the classroom. Some of the learning by doing strategies were shared during the interview. Most of the teachers have occupied with professional development workshops to increase their understanding on how to implement learning by doing that enhance inquiry in the classroom practices. Accordingly, over 90% of teachers agreed on the importance of application learning by doing in the classroom practices. Regarding some feedback, more than half of teachers agreed that learning resources and environment are helpful in the application of learning by doing. Moreover, learning by doing also enhanced inquiry and promote student voice and choice. Despite all the strengths have mentioned above, some challenges also were shared. For example limited resources, time and cost consume and different teachers' abilities in applying learning by doing in the classroom

Computers are becoming the norm for teaching and learning. The Internet gives people ready access to text, visual and audio messages from around the world. For teachers, content is critical and the future dictates the need for major changes in the role of the teacher and learner. Today’s digital tools and video games have proven to be well known motivators. This paper stressed the importance for educators to develop content using these tools and games. We are in the world of interaction and need to be prepared for even more technological advancements. To the extent that instructors keep up with future innovations, will dictate how well these challenges are met and utilized for the betterment of the teaching/learning process.
