Background and history of hydroponics and protected cultivation.

Abstract Along with new types of protected cropping structures, materials and technology, the range and diversity of hydroponic crops grown are also expanding. While the greenhouse mainstays of nursery plants, tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, salad vegetables and herbs will continue to expand in volume, newer, speciality and niche market crops are growing in popularity. These include new cut flower species, potted plants and ornamental crops, and a growing trend in the commercial production of medicinal herbs using high-technology methods such as aeroponics. Exotic culinary herbs such as wasabi, dwarf fruiting trees and spices such as ginger and vanilla are now grown commercially in protected cropping structures, while many home gardeners continue to take up hydroponics and protected cropping as both a hobby and a means of growing produce. Protected cropping and hydroponic methods will further their expansion into hostile climates which never previously allowed the production of food.

AbstractIn the autumn of 2018, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis affected adult employees from the same company in Western Norway. The organism wasCryptosporidium parvum, GP60 subtype IIaA14G1R1. All those infected had drunk from the same container of self-pressed apple juice. Incubation period (1 week) and clinical signs were similar among those infected, although some experienced a more prolonged duration of symptoms (up to 2–3 weeks) than others. The infections resulted after consumption from only one of 40 containers of juice and not from any of the other containers. It seems that althoughCryptosporidiumoocysts were detected in a sample from another container, the contamination did not affect the whole batch. This is perhaps indicative of a restricted contamination event, either from contaminated ground in the orchard, or during collection of the fruit, or during processing. Although outbreaks of food-borne cryptosporidiosis have previously been associated with consumption of contaminated apple juice, most of the more recent outbreaks of food-borne cryptosporidiosis have been associated with salad vegetables or herbs. This outbreak, the first outside USA reported to be associated with apple juice, is a timely reminder that such juice is a suitable transmission vehicle forCryptosporidiumoocysts, and that appropriate hygienic measures are essential in the production of such juice, including artisanal (non-commercial) production.

The 1970s and early 1980s was the period in which high technology medicine became dominant. It had begun in the late 1950s with the introduction of effective artificial respiratory technology. This gave physicians, patients, and families the hope that the threats to fundamental life processes such as breathing could be countered by technology, and the dilemma of both meeting its costs and the ethical challenges of how to remove it when its use no longer produced benefits.

Fifteen to twenty years ago one might have been forgiven for thinking that both the philosophy and history of science constituted specialized academic backwaters, far removed from debates in the forefront of either philosophic or public attention. But times have changed; science and technology have in many ways and in many guises become central foci of public debate, whether through concern over nuclear safety, the massive price to be paid for continued research in areas such as high energy physics, the cost of high technology medicine, the spectre of genetic engineering, or the wonders of information processing and the computer revolution. At the same time that there is public questioning of the authority of expert scientific pronouncements and debate about the wisdom of courses of action proposed in the name of technology and progress, there is political pressure to direct eduction in an increasingly scientific and technological direction. But even so, in this country, the history and philosophy of science remain peripheral disciplines, not only in relation to the total academic scene but even in relation to philosophy, which is itself being academically marginalized.

Discussions of promenade concerts, at least in the United Kingdom, tend to run along one of two lines: either the format is emblematic of attempts to popularize classical music or (in the famous case of the Last Night of the BBC Proms) it is symptomatic of a contested cultural nationalism. An alternative line of inquiry is to consider promenade concerts as part of the built environment. Until 2010 the fountain at the Royal Albert Hall was a mainstay of musical promenading; it had been so for over a century and a half. Such fountains, often accompanied by potted plants and Arcadian décor, were said to cool the concert hall and freshen the air, especially when their sprinkles were supplemented with blocks of imported ice. They occupied a prominent place in a concert architecture that encouraged mobility and informality, drawing on a long tradition of outdoor promenading that had gradually moved indoors. The history of concert hall suggests that the promenade phenomenon constituted not only a site of social and political negotiation (as it has typically been described), but also a staging post in the enclosure of hitherto open spaces and an example of the Victorian desire to control the climate of public assembly.

Forests and woodlands of the steppe region of Kazakhstan are an important element of the agrarian landscape of this region. The colonial agrarian policy of the Russian Empire in Kazakhstan was carried out not only through the mass resettlement of peasants and the seizure of fertile land, but also the seizure of forests and forest lands of Kazakh lands. According to the Steppe Regulations of 1891, forests and forest lands in the Kazakh steppe were declared the state property of the Russian Empire. In the process of implementing the agrarian colonial policy, the forest lands of the steppe regions became objects of commercial production. These factors became a prerequisite for a change in the agrarian landscape and a crisis in the ecosystem of the steppe regions in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries

Medicinal herbs and some derivatives have been used in the treatment of heart disease which is rarely responsible for ventricular arrhythmias and cardiac arrest. Ventricular tachycardia (VT) increases the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, only a few reports are available about the cardiac ventricular arrhythmia followed by taking herbal medicines. We present two patients (a couple) without a history of heart disease who referred to the hospital with ventricular arrhythmia.

Science, Technology, and Virtue offers a range of perspectives illustrating how scholars across multiple disciplines have found virtue valuable for helping us to understand, construct, and use the fruits of modern science and technology. In doing so, the authors show how intellectual and moral character—as embodied dispositions for action—continue to be central for pursuing the good life, even in an age of high technology and science.
