Community-Based ecotourism and bushmeat consumption dynamics: Implications for conservation and community development

Background: Although interprofessional education (IPE) has come to be considered essential in health and social care education programs, most IPE programs in Japan focus on clinical settings. However, following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, IPE programs are considered essential for community development, especially in disaster-affected areas. To identify key issues for the development of IPE, we aimed to clarify the current status of IPE programs and problems in their implementation using an original questionnaire. Methods and Findings: The targets were 865 undergraduate courses that qualify students to take national registered health/social care examinations. Effective responses were received from 284 targets. Of these 284 respondents, 103 respondents had already implemented an IPE program and 181 respondents had not. Among the 103 respondents who had already implemented an IPE program, we found a tendency to collaborate with partners in clinical settings or in social settings. Furthermore, respondents who had implemented or were planning to implement an IPE program had difficulty with ‘interdisciplinary and/or extramural collaboration’ and ‘educational factors’. Conclusions: These difficulties could be considered barriers to developing effective IPE programs for community-based collaboration between health and social care professionals. Future research should investigate more specific solutions to these problems.

BAZNAS is the organization that manages zakat on a national level, working toward alleviating poverty in Indonesia through its Zakat Community Development (ZCD) program. The ZCD program focuses on community-based development through the empowerment of the mustahik community living in rural areas. This study aims to measure the level of welfare and determine the eligibility of Bedono Village, Demak District to receive assistance in the form of zakat funds through the ZCD program. This research employed a survey method using interviews and focus group discussion, combined with a questionnaire. The analytical tool used in this analysis is the Multi-Stage Weighted Index. This research reveals the condition of Bedono Village to be “fairly good,” with an index score of 0.49. This means that Bedono Village can be considered for eligibility to receive help in the form of zakat.

Poverty alleviation through community development is well-accepted agenda throughout the globe. One of the recognized tools for such community development endeavors has been community-based tourism. Not only an atecendent of development, community based tourism can have transformative effect on the individual, community and society as a whole, contributing to momentous transformative service movement. This formed the basis of this study. The research focuses primarily in two communities based tourism. Although the research is conducted at two different locations of Nepal, this study’s findings can help guide other similar programs. The findings of the study are encouraging, firstly, it shows CBT can have transformative effect on individual, community and society as a while - people involved in CBT have better individual wellbeing, with satisfaction in their life and better community attachment. In terms of financial wellbeing and psychological needs, CBT seems to fulfill these requirements. Then secondly, it has identified the reasons behind failure of CBT as deficiency in proper mechanism, insufficient scope of coverage, lack of local engagement and empowerment On the positive side, CBT has been successful in stimulating local economy in terms of tourist in flow, enhance the historical heritage, culture, traditions etc., promoting local tradition, generating income promoting local entrepreneurship and produces. The economic impact of CBT is found to be significant. And thirdly based on the outcomes a strong advocacy for CBT is proposed, and this study stands as an attempt to contribute to TSR movement. In this article, the authors report on lessons drawn from more than 3 years of experience with seniors-led community development at the neighborhood level, the Elder Friendly Communities Program (EFCP). Although community practice has a long history in social work, it has been largely neglected with older adults. Based on analysis of qualitative data, the authors discuss key themes that inform community development practice with seniors including (a) challenging the dominant paradigm of community-based service delivery, (b) efficiency and sustainability, (c) expectations and perceptions of expertise, (d) involvement and leadership, and (e) multicultural practice. With a growing and increasingly healthy elder population, it is time to expand the scope of gerontological social work practice beyond a focus on disability and dependency.

Mel King is an activist, politician, educator, and lifelong resident of the South End in Boston,Massachusetts. His passion is transformation: finding ways to support human development,learning for life, and social change for justice. For thirty years King has been a strong and active force in the development of the Black community in Boston. His role in community education and development is expansive. He has, among many other activities, worked for his community as an elected official; served as a state representative to the Massachusetts legislature for twelve years; and run as a candidate for mayor of Boston. King has always worked with young people in and out of schools, on the streets and in community centers; he was active in organizing youths and parents to desegregate Boston's public schools. King is a member of the Rainbow Coalition,a progressive organization that is politically active at the local and national levels and has, with the presidential candidacy of Jesse Jackson, become a strong voice within the Democratic Party. His books, A Chain of Change and Liberating Theory (written with Albert, Cagan Chomsky, Hahnel, Sargent, and Sklar), document his thinking and practice on community development,education, and social change. Mel King is currently Adjunct Professor and Director of the Community Fellows Program in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Editorial Board of the Review thought it would be exciting and informative to talk with Mel King about his rich experience and work in community-based education. We wanted to include in our Special Issue someone local, someone right near us; someone from our own community in the Boston area, because we felt that talking with a neighbor and finding out what's going on in our own area is an essential part of community-based education. We decided to interview Mel King instead of asking him to write an article, because we wanted the give-and-take of a conversation and because we could talk with him right down the street. Over the span of several months three members of the Review — Alexander Goniprow, Victoria Borden Muñoz,and Jacquelyn Ramos — interviewed Mel King at his MIT office. The interviews were audiotaped and transcribed, providing over one-hundred pages of text from about five hours of conversation. Transforming the conversation from audiotapes to a written piece was an educational process in itself. We quickly realized that how we talked and what we said, although clear during our conversations, needed much editing and additional explanations to read clearly. The task of editing such a rich narrative was not easy but we believe that what follows is true to the content and the form of our collaboration. The conversation begins with our asking questions and Mel King responding to them. At the end of our first meeting where King discussed his views on transformation, education, and community development he also asked us what we thought our role was in community-based education and in transformation. We agreed that each of us would think this over and return to the next meeting with a "moment of transformation" story; that is, a time when we were transformed by something we learned, when we learned something new about ourselves, our community, our work. We did this in keeping with the spirit of King's firm belief in the "valuing of all people and the value of all people." These stories compose the last part of the conversation. This represents what we mean by community-based education — namely, the valuing of everyone as equals and the personal as well as political importance of change. We thought a good place to start would be by talking about some of the principles of community-based education and what these are for you.

This research aims to increase knowledge and skills in managing the environment, especially plastic waste through systematic and sustainable manner. The research was conducting in Code River community. This research using a Community Based Research (CBR) approach method. By this method researcher is involved in a program that is formulated and applied by the community to solve environmental problems caused by household waste. This research is one of the results of community development practicum conducted by students of Islamic Community Development Study Program UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The program carried out in this study uses a garbage shodakoh system where the waste goes through the stages of sorting, recycling and selling. In addition, this system is strengthened with Islamic values in the practice of shodakoh for handling existing waste. The results of this study indicate that there is an increase in community knowledge and skills in optimizing household waste, especially plastics, into various recycling. With this program there are a variety of positive impacts generated in the form of increased community cash income, increasing harmony and increasing public awareness not to throw garbage or waste in the river.
