The time required for a mechanical impulse to propagate from one end to the other was measured directly in frog sartorius muscles and in fiber bundles from the semitendinosus muscle. When the fibers were fully activated, the transmission velocity was 170 mm/ms. In resting fibers the transmission time was three to four times greater than in activated fibers. Control experiments indicated that the transmission time across the tendons was negligible. A muscle compliance of 55–80 Å per half sarcomere was estimated from these data. The "measurement time" of the method was calculated to be about 15 µs. This relatively short measurement time makes the method potentially useful for detecting changes in cross-bridge compliance.

Depressed Antithrombin III (AT) levels Increase thrombic tendency in man, therefore value in assaying this protein has been established. Immunochemical analysis of AT in clinical disease has however proved controversial, consequently systematic studies were undertaken to rationalize the requirements necessary to optimise these methods in particular electro-Immunoassay. The known binding affinity of AT for heparin has been exploited to differentiate high affinity AT from its inhibitor - protease complexes and has resulted in reports stating that heparin added to the agar gel prior to electrophoresis significantly reduces the time required for completion of antigen/antibody complexes. Our studies however have demonstrated that the antibody required for quantitative analysis must be capable of not only reacting with “native” antigenic determinants of AT but also with “neo” antigens that are exposed when inhibitor-protease complexes are formed. Heparin should not be used in the test protocol, for it has a paradoxical effect on Immunopreclpltation in gels, masking some antigenic determinants of unbound - high affinity AT on one hand, and appear to disrupt the Immunoprecipitin “rocket” formed with the inhibitor-protease complexes during electrophoresis on the other.

Prospects for democracy in Iraq should be assessed in light of the historical precedents of nations with comparable political experiences. Saddam Hussein's Iraq was an unusually extreme autocracy, which lasted an unusually long time. Since the end of the nineteenth century, only thirty nations have experienced an autocracy as extreme as Iraq's for a period exceeding two decades. The subsequent political experience of those nations offers a pessimistic forecast for Iraq and similar nations. Only seven of the thirty are now democratic, and only two of them have become established democracies; the democratic experiments in the other five are still in progress. Among the seven, the average time required to transit the path from extreme autocracy to coherent, albeit precarious, democracy has been fifty years, and only two have managed this transition in fewer than twenty-five years. Even this sober assessment is probably too optimistic, because Iraq lacks the structural conditions that theory and evidence indicate have been necessary for successful democratic transitions in the past. Thus, the odds of Iraq achieving democracy in the next quarter century are close to zero, at best about two in thirty, but probably far less.

AbstractThis research communication describes how different detachment levels (0.48, 0.3 and 0.06 kg milk/min) at the quarter-level affect milk flow profiles and overall milking efficiency in automatic milking systems. We hypothesized a higher detachment level would result in greater mean flow rates without affecting the volume of harvested milk per cow during 24 h compared to lower detachment levels. The data suggest milk flow decreased to a rate below the overmilking limit within the 6-s delay time required for termination in all treatments, but the duration of overmilking was shorter for the greatest detachment level compared to the other treatments. We conclude that setting a detachment level at a greater milk flow rate reduces the duration of overmilking without affecting the amount of milk harvested when applied to cows in mid-lactation during quarter-level milking. We also suggest that the steepness of the decline phase of the milk flow curve might have a larger effect than the actual detachment level on the duration of overmilking.

AbstractVibro-acoustic communication is used by honey bees in many different social contexts. Our previous research showed that workers interact with their queen outside of the swarming period by means of wing-beating behaviour. Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that the wing-beating behaviour of workers attending the queen stimulates her to lay eggs. The behaviour of workers and the queen was recorded using a high-speed camera, at first in the presence of uncapped brood in the nest and then without one. None of the queens performed wing-beating behaviour. On the other hand, the workers attending the queen demonstrated this behaviour two times per minute, on average, even in the presence of uncapped brood in the nest. After removing the combs with the uncapped brood, the incidence of wing-beating behaviour increased significantly to an average of four times per minute. Wing-beating behaviour did not differ significantly in its characteristics when uncapped brood was present or absent in the nest. During 3 days after removing the combs with the uncapped brood, there was no significant increase in the rate of egg lying by the queen. Therefore, the results presented here do not convincingly confirm that the wing-beating behaviour of workers affects the rate of queen's egg-lying. This negative result can be related to colony disturbance and longer time required by the queen to increase egg production.

Even when parents have the time required to support their children’s education, they can increase their children’s anxiety about school when they try to help, especially if they are not confident in their own abilities. This study measures the effects of having parents complete nonacademic schoolwork with their teenage children. Half of the 422 participating parents were randomly assigned to receive weekly assignments for nonacademic activities to complete with their children, whereas the other half received information about upcoming mathematics tests. Mathematics-anxious students benefited from working on the nonacademic assignments, performing significantly better on their mathematics tests and decreasing their mathematics anxiety after treatment. These findings highlight the importance of involving parents in ways that feel nonthreatening to their children.

The present investigation is concerned with the energy distributions in globular clusters. In a sense, energy-distribution measurements are comparable with multi-colour photometry. The chief advantage is that narrower band-passes may be used and the entire spectrum traced, whereas in multi-colour photometry one is limited to effective wavelengths determined by the filter and a rather broad band-pass. On the other hand, broad band-pass photometry often permits one to cover a broader spectral range, and to work much faster. Since the time required for a single observation is much shorter, the observer is less at the mercy of the sky transparency. Hence a greater accuracy can be obtained.

Ordinarily, the Remotely Operated Vehicles and underwater divers, even with modern illuminating lamps, would be unable to observe objects clearly in muddy or unclear underwater condition. Efforts have therefore been made to demonstrate that in such underwater condition, it is possible to perform visual inspections and observations adequately and reliably for underwater leaking structures using novel equipment. The novel equipment works by simply supplying a clear laminar flow of water which flows over the surface of the structure to be observed. A camera eye is then placed to observe through the steady flowing clear water. Different configurations of the equipment were checked and it was found that the equipment with fitted valves installed in the flooding box in-line with flowing clear water produced the best result. The volume of water required for the observations appears constant and independent of the depth of water except during the first initial stage of flooding. On the other hand, the period of time required for clear observations increases with increase in water depth. The performance of the equipment was found independent of the nature of underwater visibility. The benefits of this work ranges from leaking structures’ close-visual inspection including leaking pipelines, to subsea pipeline field joint wrap damage inspection for beach pulls in cofferdams. This technique is considered cheap, robust and flexible.

The study was conducted to test the feasibility of protocols for field collection of cumulus–oocyte complexes (COC) for invitro embryo production (IVP) in wild bison. The study was done with captive wood bison during the late anovulatory season (July). In Experiment 1, bison were assigned randomly to 2 groups (n=8/group) in which transvaginal ultrasound-guided COC collection was done in a chute without sedation or in lateral recumbency after chemical immobilization using a dart gun to compare collection efficiencies. In Experiment 2, a 2×2 design was used to examine the effects of superstimulation treatments [single-dose equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) vs. multiple-dose FSH] and methods of drug administration (manual injection vs. field darting) on COC collection and IVP. Initial COC collection was done to serve as a non-superstimulated random start and to synchronize follicular wave emergence on the following day (Day 0; n=16). Half of the bison were given a single dose of 5000IU of eCG intramuscularly (IM) on Day −1. The other half were given 200mg of FSH IM on Day 0 and Day 2, followed by 2000IU human chorionic gonadotrophin IM on Day 4. Superstimulatory treatments were given by manual injection (chute restrained) to half of the bison in each group and by field darting in the other half. The COC were collected on Day 4 in the eCG group and Day 5 in the FSH group. Recovered COC were matured invitro for 25 to 28h at 38.8°C, fertilized (2×106 sperm mL−1) and co-incubated at 38.8°C in 5% O2, 5% CO2, and 90% N2 for 18h. Presumptive zygotes were denuded and cultured at 38.8°C in 5% O2, 5% CO2, and 90% N2. A commercially available IVF media set was utilised (IVF Bioscience). Data were compared by ANOVA and GLIMMIX. In Experiment 1, no difference was detected between chute-restrained vs. chemically immobilized groups in the time required to complete COC collection (6.9±1.0 vs. 8.9±1.0 min; P=0.2), the number of follicles aspirated (11.5±1.9 vs. 9.3±1.8; P=0.4), or the COC recovery rate [COC recovered/follicle aspirated; 58/92 (63%) vs. 44/69 (64%); P=0.9]. In Experiment 2, no differences were detected between superstimulation treatments (eCG vs. FSH) or method of drug administration (manual injection vs. field darting) for any endpoint. The number of medium (4.5–7.5 mm; 9.5±1.0 vs. 2.5±0.6; P<0.0001) and large (>8 mm; 8.6±0.8 vs. 3.4±1.5; P=0.004) follicles available was greater after superstimulation (groups combined) than without superstimulation (random start). Although there was no difference in the number of recovered compact COC between the superstimulated and non-superstimulated bison (8.9±1.3 vs. 6.2±1.7; P=0.2), the embryo production rate (number of embryos produced/number of COC matured) was greater after superstimulation than without superstimulation [54/189 (39%) vs. 19/108 (18%); P<0.05]. We conclude that COC collection in a field setting is feasible and minimum-handling superstimulation with a single dose of eCG is as effective as a multiple-dose FSH protocol for the invitro production of embryos in bison. Six plant species were germinated in sand wetted with water extracts of tissues of five field crops and three soils. Deionized water was used as a check f he study was conducted using standard seed germination techniques.Alter 7 to 10 days all of the germinated seeds were harvested and measurements made of the shoot and root lengths.Alfalfa extract caused the greatest reduction in shoot and root length as well as m percentage germination. It caused the greatest increase in the time required for germination. Timothy extract was not quite as harmful as the alfalfa. Extracts of oats, corn and potatoes were still less harmful with potato extract causing the least effect.The soil extracts generally had very little effect when compared with deionized water.Plant species showed marked differences in tolerance to the extracts alfalfa being the most resistant and timothy the least.Where water alone was used rate of germination and per cent germination were as high or higher than with the other extracts, but the root and shoot lengths were not always the greatest.

The momentum integral equation is used to study the transient behavior of a Blasius-type boundary layer which is suddenly subjected to uniform blowing or suction. The time required for the boundary layer to adjust itself from one steady state (Blasius) to the other (constant blowing or suction) was found to be proportional to the distance from the leading edge. Boundary-layer thickness of intermediate states and skin friction coefficients are also reported.
