Abstract Ferromagnetic insulators have received widespread attention for applications in novel low power consumption spintronic devices. Further optimizing the robust ferromagnetic insulating and developing multifunctional ferromagnetic insulator by integrating other magnetic property can not only ease or pave the way for actual application, but also provide an additional freedom degree for device designing. In this work, by introducing antiferromagnetic CoO into ferromagnetic insulator LaMnO3, we have constructed (1-x)LaMnO3:xCoO composite thin films. The films simultaneously show robust ferromagnetic insulator characteristics and large exchange bias. For x = 0.5 sample, the resistivity is 120 Ω·cm at 250 K while the magnetization is 100 emu/cm3 and the exchange bias field is -2200 Oe at 10 K. Especially, the blocking temperature is up to 140 K. Synchrotron radiation x-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the coexistence of Mn3+, Mn2+, Co2+ and Co3+, arising from interfacial charge transfer and space charge/defect trapping, should be responsible for the enhanced and integrated multifunctional magnetic properties.

Composite thin films arouse great interests owing to the multifunctionalities and heterointerface induced physical property tailoring. The exchange bias effect aroused from the ferromagnetic (FM)–antiferromagnetic (AFM) heterointerface is applicable in various applications such as magnetic storage. In this work, (LaFeO3)x:(La0.7Ca0.3MnO3)1−x composite thin films have been deposited via pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and the exchange bias effect was investigated. In such system, LaFeO3 (LFO) is an antiferromagnet while La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) is a ferromagnet, which results in the exchange bias interfacial coupling at the FM/AFM interface. The composition variation of the two phases could lead to the exchange bias field (HEB) tuning in the composite system. This work demonstrates a new composite thin film system with FM-AFM interfacial exchange coupling, which could be applied in various spintronic applications.

We present the possibility of enhancing magnetoresistance (MR) by controlling nanoscale domain wall (DW) width in a planar nanowire array. Results based on micromagnetic calculations show that DW width decreases with increasing exchange bias field and decreases with reducing exchange interaction between neighboring nanowires. Fe/Fe3O4 nanowire arrays were grown on [Formula: see text]-plane sapphire to demonstrate the feasibility of this concept, and an enhanced MR ratio of 3.7% was observed at room temperature. compared with flat and stepped Fe3O4 thin films.
