The fact that block copolymers can assume a range of morphologies depending upon such variables as relative block length and molecular weight is now well known. In the case of poly(styrene)[PS]-poly(butadiene)[PB]-poly(styrene) (SBS) triblock copolymer, the morphologies range from spheres (roughly ~20% minor component), to cylinders (roughly 20%~35% minor component), to lamellae (roughly equal component fractions) Most recently, there has been increasing interest in transformations between morphologies by thermal annealing. This paper describes initial results studying the effect of solvent evaporation rate and post-casting annealing treatment on the morphology of SBS thin films.TEM specimens were prepared by solution casting electron transparent films. 50 μl of 0.1 wt% SBS (30% styrene, Mw=14,000, Scientific Polymer Products, Inc.) dissolved in toluene was deposited on a polished NaCl single crystal substrate placed in a small dish. After solvent evaporation the film was cut into small squares, floated from the salt in water, and each square was collected on a Cu grid.

Polymer electrolytes systems compose of (PEO+KI+I2) and (PEO+RbI+I2) with different concentration, and a fixed amount of ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) over temperatures range 293-343 K prepared by solution cast method. The conductivity and dielectric constant of the gel electrolytes were studied. The conductivity of the electrolytes Ss & Hs increases steadily with increased concentration of salt KI and RbI. The higher value of conductivity of (4.7 10-3 @ RT S.cm-1) for S5 electrolyte which contains (KI 50%). Whereas the maximum amount of conductivity of (5.4 10³ @RT S.cm⁻ˡ) for H5 electrolyte which contains (RbI 50%) the ionic conductivity depends on the ionic radii of the migrating species (cation K⁺, Rb⁺) effect on it. As the temperature increase, the number of free ions also increases, thus increases the diffusion of ions through their free volume of the polymer. The dielectric constant decrease at higher frequencies due to the inability of dipoles to align quickly with the change of applied field. The dielectric constant proportional positively with variation temperature causes an increase in the dielectric constant. The higher the value of (εr), the better is the electrical conductivity.

In the present work the effect of plasma treatment has been used to improve the surface properties of polymeric membranes. The polymeric membranes of polycarbonate (PC) were synthesized using solution cast method. The plasma treatment was done in high vacuum chamber using nitrogen gas and the pressure for the plasma treatment was » 10-2 mbar. The effect of plasma treatment on surface properties like morphology, roughness, wettability and optical properties has been characterized using optical microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy for different time of plasma treatment.

AbstractTeflon® AF is a family of amorphous fluoropolymers with glass transition temperatures as high as 300° based on bis-2,2-trfluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole, (I), which has unusual properties [1–3] (Figure 1). The family retains the superior electrical, chemical resistance and thermal properties associated with fluoropolymers. In addition the polymers have high optical clarity, limited solubility in some commercially available perfluorinated ethers such as Fluorinert® FC-75 and improved physical properties below their glass transition temperatures (Figure 2). Teflon® AF polymers may be either solution cast into clear micron thin films or melt processed into a variety of forms.

In this study, PVDF membranes were prepared by solution-cast method. The effects of evaporation temperature on the morphology, polymorph and mechanical properties of such prepared membranes were studied. It was found that perfect spherulites were observed in the solution-cast membranes. FESEM photomicrographs of the membranes showed dense structure. PVDF mainly crystallized into α phase. In the solution-cast process, the spherulite size increased as evaporation temperature was increased from 120 °C to 150 °C, when the evaporation temperature was 165 °C, spherulite size decreased. And the tensile strength increased with the decrease in spherulite size.

This paper reports on the fabrication of low-k (amorphous) silica thin films cast from solutions without and with two different types of surfactants (TWEEN® 80 and Triton™ X-100) to elucidate the relationships between the structural/morphological features of the casting solutions and the physical properties of the resulting thin films.
