The 3-D unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-tokes equations based on the pseudo-homogeneous flow theory and a vapor fraction transport-equation that accounts for non-condensable gas are solved to simulate cavitating flow in a Francis turbine. The calculation results agreed with experiment data reasonably. With the decrease of the Thoma number, the cavity first appears near the centre of the hub. At this stage the flow rate and the efficiency change little. Then the cavity near the centre of the hub grows thick and the cavities also appear on the blade suction side near outlet. With further reduce of the Thoma number the cavitation extends to the whole flow path, which causes flow rate and efficiency decrease rapidly.

Abstract In order to reveal the dredge pump flow instability characteristics, the cavitation and pressure fluctuation in experimental study are carried out, the pressure fluctuation frequency domain and time domain characteristics of three different position inside the volute are analyzed. The results showed that, before cavitation, the main frequency at different positions at different flow rates is 1 times the main frequency of the blade. The fluctuation amplitude near the volute tongue and diffusion section is slightly larger than that at other positions. Before cavitation, the fluctuation amplitude at the same position off design flow is slightly higher than that near the design flow. Cavitation has little influence on the main frequency of the pressure fluctuation. After cavitation, the pressure fluctuation amplitude in the low flow point and the position of the volute tongue under each condition has little change, but cavitation aggravates the pressure fluctuation in the other conditions. Besides, the comparison between simulation and experiment results shows the dredge pump performance curve is in good agreement with the simulation curve, and the simulation results of pressure amplitude at different positions are basically consistent with the experiment results, which verifies the reliability of the numerical simulation method.

The inter-blade passage vortex, the vortex rope of the draft tube, and the vortex in the guide apparatus are the characteristics of flow instability of the Francis turbine, which may lead to fatigue failure in serious cases. In the current study, in order to accurately capture the transient turbulent characteristics of flow under different conditions and fully understand the flow field and vortex structure, we conduct a simulation that adopts sliding grid technology and the large-eddy simulation (LES) method based on the wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE) model. Using the pressure iso-surface method, the Q criterion, and the latest third-generation Liutex vortex identification method, this study analyzes and compares the inter-blade passage vortex, the vortex rope of the draft tube, and the outflow and vortex in the guide apparatus, focusing on the capture ability of flow field information by various vortex identification methods and the unique vortex structure under the condition of a small opening. The results indicate that the dependence of Liutex on the threshold is small, and the scale range of the flow direction vortex captured by Liutex is wider, but the ability of the spanwise vortex is relatively weak. The smaller the opening, the more disorderly the vortexes generated in each component and the more unstable the flow field. In the draft tube, the original shape of the vortex rope is destroyed due to the interaction between vortexes. Under the condition of a small opening, an inter-blade passage vortex is generated, affecting the efficient and stable operation of the turbine.

This paper presents an investigation of external flow characteristics and pressure fluctuation of a submersible tubular pumping system by using a combination of numerical simulation and experimental methods. The steady numerical simulation is used to predicted the hydraulic performance of the pumping system, and the unsteady calculation is adopted to simulate the pressure fluctuation in different components of a submersible tubular pumping system. A test bench for a model test and pressure pulsation measurement is built to validate the numerical simulation. The results show that the performance curves of the calculation and experiment are in agreement with each other, especially in the high efficiency area, and the deviation is minor under small discharge and large discharge conditions. The pressure pulsation distributions of different flow components, such as the impeller outlet, middle of the guide vane, and guide vane outlet and bulb unit, are basically the same as the measurement data. For the monitoring points on the impeller and the wall of the guide vane especially, the main frequency and its amplitude matching degree are higher, while the pressure pulsation values on the wall of the bulb unit are quite different. The blade passing frequency and its multiples are important parameters for analysis of pressure pulsation; the strongest pressure fluctuation intensity appears in the impeller outlet, which is mainly caused by the rotor–stator interaction. The farther the measuring point from the impeller, the less the pressure pulsation is affected by the blade frequency. The frequency amplitudes decrease from the impeller exit to the bulb unit.

In order to investigate the silt abrasion of modified trailing edge of stay vane in Francis turbine, the numerical simulation of trailing edge with different geometries were carried out based on the solid-liquid two-phase flow by means of Computation Fluid Dynamics. The results show that low solid volume fraction distributes on the chamfered surface of trailing edge, and high solid volume fraction distributes on the end of oblique surface. The smaller the modified angle is, the larger the distribution area of high solid volume fraction is, which show the trailing edge with smaller oblique angle may suffer from silt abrasion. Therefore, in order to solve the vibration caused by Karman vortex the trailing edge has to be sharpened, the oblique angle of trailing edge should not be too small. At end of trailing edge needs to ensure a certain thickness, especially the trailing edge near the lower ring can be thicker, which can meet the anti-abrasion requirements.

The vibration intensity is strong in Francis turbine occurred under the small opening conditions, such as Lijia Gorges and Three Gorges project. In paper we use large eddy simulation (LES) method base on Vreman SubGrid-Scale model to study the generation and evolution process of turbulence flow, capturing the details of the flow structures and the dissipation of the turbulent kinetic energy. The SIMPIEC algorithm is applied to solve the coupled equation of velocity and pressure. The result shows that the small guide vane opening conditions deviate the optimal conditions most. So some unstable flow characters been induced. Such as the turbulent kinetic energy of fluid in guide vanes zone, the blade passage and the draft tube are very strong. The unstable flow phenomenon including the swirl, flow separation, interruption and vortex strip. It can be deduced that the vibration of unit is induced by these flow characteristic.
