Soil-liquefaction-related hazards can damage structures or lead to an extensive loss of life and property. Therefore, the stability and safety of structures against soil liquefaction are essential for evaluation in earthquake design. In practice, the simplified liquefaction analysis procedure associated with numerical simulation analysis is the most used approach for evaluating the behavior of structures or the effectiveness of mitigation plans. First, the occurrence of soil liquefaction is evaluated using the simplified procedure. If soil liquefaction occurs, the resulting structural damage or the following mitigation plan is evaluated using the numerical simulation analysis. Rational and comparable evaluation results between the simplified liquefaction analysis procedure and the numerical simulation analysis are achieved by ensuring that the liquefaction constitutive model used in the numerical simulation has a consistent liquefaction resistance with the simplified liquefaction analysis procedure. In this study, two frequently used liquefaction constitutive models (Finn model and UBCSAND model) were calibrated by fitting the liquefaction triggering curves of most used simplified liquefaction analysis procedures (NCEER, HBF, JRA96, and T-Y procedures) in Taiwan via FLAC program. In addition, the responses of two calibrated models were compared and discussed to provide guidelines for selecting an appropriate liquefaction constitutive model in future projects.

Abstract Ship collision accidents occur from time to time in recent years, and this would cause serious consequences such as casualties, environmental pollution, loss of cargo on board, damage to the ship and its equipment, etc. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the response of ship motion and the mechanism of structural damage during the collision. In this paper, model experiments and numerical simulation are used to study the ship-ship collision. Firstly, the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) was used to simulate the fluid-structure interaction for predicting structural deformation and ship motion during the normal ship-ship collision. Meanwhile, a series of model tests were carried out to validate the numerical results. The validation presented that the CEL simulation was in good agreement with the model test. However, the CEL simulation could not present the characteristics the time-dependent added mass.

The combustion process of municipal solid waste (MSW) in a operating 750t/d grate furnace in Guangzhou was researched by means of numerical simulation. The influence of MSW moisture content on burning effect was discussed. The results show that: with the moisture content dropped from 50% to 30%, the heat value could be evaluated from 13.72% to 54.91% and the average temperature in the furnace could be promoted 90-248°C. However, the combustible gases and particle in the flue gas of outlet would take up a high proportion since lacking of oxygen would lead to an incomplete combustion. The excess air coefficient should be increased to 2.043~2.593 in order to ensure the flue gas residence time more than 2s and temperature in the furnace higher to 800°C.

Wave loading from inundation events like storms and tsunamis can cause severe structural damage to buildings (Xian et al., 2015); therefore, it is important to predict wave loading as accurately as possible. One uncertainty in estimating wave loads during inundation events is the possible reduction of loads by sheltering from other buildings. Understanding and quantifying this effect could reduce overestimated loads in sheltered buildings and avoid over-conservative structural design. The collision mechanisms of spar platform haven’t caused so much attention as that of ships in the past, for the short of this kind of collision accidents reported. But this does not mean the impossibility of the collision accident in the future. The research on external mechanism and internal mechanism for a ship colliding with a spar platform is introduced in this paper. A model test is designed to study the external mechanism. The collision scenario is described as a ship colliding with a spar platform moored in 1500 meters water depth. The specifics of the spar’s motions and the tension forces of the mooring lines are gathered, to find the hydrodynamic characteristics in the collision scenario. It is found that the maximal displacements and the maximal pitch angles of the spar platform, and the maximal tension forces of mooring lines are all linearly proportional to the initial velocity of the striking ship basically. Mooring lines play elastic roles in the collision course. The internal mechanism of the ship colliding with the spar platform is achieved by numerical simulation method and the software used is MSC.DYTRAN. A Truss-Spar is taken as the object and a double hull structural design is adopted in the part of hard tank near water surface. The curves of collision characters and the structural damage are obtained. The crashworthiness of the double hull design is verified, through the numerical simulation results.

Flexibility is more sensitive to structural damage than frequency or mode. Curvature matrix of change in flexibility is presented as a new index of nondestructive damage detection, which is derived from change in structural flexibilities calculated from before damaging and after damaging by means of difference calculation twice, firstly to columns, and then to rows. Therefore a new indicator called as δ Flexibility Curvature Matrix Diagonal (δFCMD) is constructed from the principal diagonal elements based on curvature matrix of change in flexibility. The numerical simulation examples indicate that the damage location and severity in structures, with single damage, multiple ones, slight ones and ones at the supports, can be detected efficiently for a cantilever beam, a fixed supported beam, a simply supported beams and so on by the indicator of δFCMD depending on only a few of lower order modes.

For understanding the transport of groundwater existing in the seasonal freezing soil,laboratory test and field monitoring (frozen depth、moisture content and ground temperature in five months) were carried out in Daxinganling. A translocation model is built to analyze water behavior. The result shows that thermal conductivity will increase approximately one percent when temperature decreases 1°C. A transition function is used to prevent non-convergence in the numerical simulation. The simulation proves that the modified numerical simulation can reveal the law of moisture and heat translocation, and further offer guidance in practice.

In view of the defects of the traditional damage identification method based on vibration,the damage identification method based on vibration transmissibility is put forward. The feasibility of the vibration transmissibility applied to structural damage identification is analyzed by the numerical simulation experiment of a cantilever beam, the analysis results show that, vibration transmissibility contains the structure damage severity, damage location and other useful information, and all the information is favor of the damage identification.
