Abstract Background YouTube is increasingly being utilized as a major educational resource by patients. It is important for plastic surgeons to understand the quality and characteristics of videos that patients are likely to view about procedures of interest. Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the videos that patients are most likely to encounter when searching YouTube for the most common cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. Methods Based on Google Trends data, the most searched medical and colloquial terms were identified for common cosmetic surgery procedures: “abdominoplasty,” “tummy tuck,” “breast augmentation,” “boob job,” “liposuction,” “lipo,” “mastopexy,” “breast lift,” “reduction mammoplasty,” and “breast reduction.” On YouTube, videos were searched by relevance (default) and view count; the top 10 results were collected in each group and rated according to the DISCERN criteria. Each video was assigned an overall and bias DISCERN score (DS). A score of 1 indicates high bias and low overall quality and a score of 5 indicates the opposite. Results In total, 143 unique videos were identified, which resulted in a mean bias DS of 2.29 and mean overall DS of 2.44. Seventy-two videos included US board-certified plastic surgeons and 58 were classified as patient experience. Videos had 667,373,209 total views and were an average of 4.27 years old. Videos including US board-certified plastic surgeons were of significantly higher quality and showed lower bias than videos without these practitioners (P < 0.05). Conclusions Overall, YouTube videos showed high bias and low quality. Plastic surgeons should be aware of this popular resource and counsel patients about the bias that is often present. Plastic surgeons and academic plastic surgery organizations should strive to upload high-quality, unbiased videos to provide patients with a more appropriate resource.

Abstract Introduction Plastic Surgery Minor Operations is a fast paced, rapid turnover operative environment. It is reliant on effective communication, accurate surgery, and time efficiency. It was noticed in our department that there was confusion regarding booking and operative intentions leading to delays in surgery and over-running lists. This was worsening patient experience and leading to delays in patient care. Method In response to the delays and confusion in booking, a new booking form was created, so all patients have a standardised booking containing the necessary information. This form was disseminated across all the booking clinics and formed a vital part of the pre-operative check in process. Results The audit was carried out at the time of introduction, and then re-audited a year later to see if the form has improved care for patients. Results showed that with the new booking form, people were not having to cancel or rearrange patients. Patient booking forms were sufficient, and a copy of the clinic letter no longer required for the operation to proceed or for clarity. It was noted that more senior advice was sought. Conclusions The new form has improved patient flow and quality of patient care, whilst streamlining the booking process.

‘Evidence-based approaches to psychiatry’ describes the application of evidence-based medicine (EBM) to psychiatric practice. The chapter covers the key processes in EBM, including the formulation of a clinically relevant question, the systematic search for high-quality evidence and the meta-analytic synthesis of data. It demonstrates how evidence-based approaches to psychiatry have led to important developments showing quantitative effects of different treatments through advanced meta-analysis of data from randomized trials. This has underpinned the development of clinical guidelines that have the aim of improving the reliability and quality of treatments that patients receive. The chapter also describes how meta-analyses should be critically reviewed, as well as their problems and limitations. Not all relevant questions in psychiatric research are susceptible to the quantitative approach offered by EBM, and the chapter also outlines how qualitative methodologies can play a key role in answering important questions related, for example, to the patient experience.

AbstractObjectiveThis study evaluated the quality of YouTube content focusing on common paediatric otolaryngology procedures, as this content can influence the opinions and medical decisions of patients.MethodsA total of 120 YouTube videos were compiled to review using the terms ‘adenoid removal’, ‘adenoidectomy’, ‘ear tubes’, ‘tympanostomy’, ‘tonsil removal’ and ‘tonsillectomy’. The Discern criteria was used to rate the quality of health information presented in each video.ResultsThe mean bias Discern score was 3.18 and the mean overall Discern score was 2.39. Videos including US board certified physicians were rated significantly higher (p < 0.001) than videos without (bias Discern score = 3.00 vs 2.38; overall Discern score = 3.79 vs 1.55). The videos had been viewed a total of 176 769 549 times.ConclusionUnbiased, high quality videos on YouTube are lacking. As patients may rely on this information when making medical decisions, it is important that practitioners continually evaluate and improve this video content. Otolaryngologists should be prepared to discuss YouTube content with patients.

Background. Three educational models for plastic surgery training exist in the United States, the integrated, combined, and independent model. The present study is a comparative analysis of aesthetic surgery training, to assess whether one model is particularly suitable to provide for high-quality training in aesthetic surgery. Methods. An 18-item online survey was developed to assess residents’ perceptions regarding the quality of training in aesthetic surgery in the US. The survey had three distinct sections: demographic information, current state of aesthetic surgery training, and residents’ perception regarding the quality of aesthetic surgery training. Results. A total of 86 senior plastic surgery residents completed the survey. Twenty-three, 24, and 39 residents were in integrated, combined, and independent residency programs, respectively. No statistically significant differences were seen with respect to number of aesthetic surgery procedures performed, additional training received in minimal-invasive cosmetic procedures, median level of confidence with index cosmetic surgery procedures, or perceived quality of aesthetic surgery training. Facial aesthetic procedures were felt to be the most challenging procedures. Exposure to minimally invasive aesthetic procedures was limited. Conclusion. While the educational experience in aesthetic surgery appears to be similar, weaknesses still exist with respect to training in minimally invasive/nonsurgical aesthetic procedures.

As an important force of social cooperative education in colleges and universities, alumni are not only the embodiment of high school achievements, but also an important educational resource in colleges and universities. By grasping the advantages of alumni as educational resources, alumni education should be carried out throughout the whole process of alumni work, and the concept of “all staff, all process, all aspects, all society and all heart” service for students and prospective alumni should be established. A high-quality alumni education team should be established, rich alumni education programs should be developed, key alumni education fields should be focused, intensive alumni education resources should be expanded, and a win-win cooperation mode between universities and alumni should be established. Taking the initiative to transform the advantages of alumni resources accumulated over a long period of time into the advantages of continuously improving the quality of personnel training, providing a solid social foundation for the school’s education work.

The core of engineering education Accreditation is to estimate engineering education qualification of each institute and make a direction for institutes development. The purpose of Accreditation is to improve universities ability to educate high quality engineers and to enhance Chinese engineering education and to make pace with international engineering education. Educational resources that affect the engineering education accreditation is one of important factors, Therefore, the model of educational resource for engineering education Accreditation becomes very important to insure the quality of Accreditation. This paper use Cloud Hierarchical Analysis (CHA) to deal with the fuzziness and uncertainty in the engineering education Accreditation. The Cloud Hierarchical Analysis can efficiently describe the fuzziness and randomness of judgment graphically by cloud figure and provide a picture for decision maker. Using cloud operator and geometric mean method to calculate the Cloud weights for each positive reciprocal Cloud matrix, and these weights are combined to determine the final Cloud scores for the alternatives. Finally, the calculation results show that Cloud Hierarchical Analysis model is suitable for educational resources of engineering education Accreditation.

Introduction: The use of a camera is essential in cosmetic surgery to record results using preoperative and postoperative photographs. The Polaroid Macro 5 SLR is a new camera for close-up photographs. The camera was examined to evaluate the ease of its use and the quality of the close-up photos. Materials and Methods: Photographs were reproduced at the settings available; these settings are: 0.2× (20%), 0.4× (40%), 1× (100%), 2× (200%), and 3× (300%). Multiple exposures were utilized in six patients to show a variety of problems such as skin lesions, facial abnormalities, and ryhtids. Results: The instant photos were of high quality with accurate reproduction of the abnormalities. The camera was easy to load, focus, and use. Discussion: The Polaroid camera takes exposures with almost instant reproduction of the abnormality. There is no need to wait for the results or to send the film out for processing. Since the Macro 5 SLR is only for close-up photographs, the camera is limited to subjects only as large as the head. Another camera is necessary for exposures requiring larger portions of the body. The close-up photography does not require lens changes but has a convenient rotating magnification selector knob. This easy-to-use camera is an excellent addition to the needs of the cosmetic surgeon who requires photos of small areas.

Abstract Background: YouTubeTM (“YouTube”) is often used as an educational tool to instruct anesthesia providers on regional anesthesia nerve blocks. However, there is no current objective standard to assess the educational quality of these user-uploaded videos. A new approach was used to objectively validate these videos by comparing them to high quality educational sources for the seven most commonly used nerve blocks.Objective: We sought to evaluate the educational quality of user-uploaded videos when compared to the highest quality anesthesia society websites (NYSORA, ACEP, USRA)Methods: After reviewing the instructional material available for the seven most frequently conducted nerve blocks on high-quality reference websites, we documented the educational characteristics present including such things as indications, volume, anatomy, etc. Next we reviewed the five most popular videos on YouTube for each block (by views) and documented the presence or absence of these educational characteristics. Results: Eighteen educational characteristics were documented in the “high-quality” anesthesia society reference material. Correlation was sought between this material and YouTube videos. Although there were varying degrees of correlation between the high quality sources and the videos, rarely did YouTube videos contain as high a percentage of these educational characteristics as the well-established sources. Some videos contained very few of these important educational characteristics. Conclusion: Although YouTube has been used an educational tool, we recommend that only high quality sources be used to teach or illustrate regional anesthesia nerve blocks.

Objective: Acquiring online health-related information has become increasingly widespread. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the quality of the most-viewed YouTube videos on dysphagia regarding exercises and compensated maneuvers. Method: We searched for the keywords “dysphagia exercise”, “dysphagia rehabilitation”, “dysphagia maneuver”, “dysphagia therapy”, and “dysphagia compensation” on YouTube on 5 February 2021. The educational quality of videos on YouTube was investigated based on the Global Quality Scale (GQS) and categorized into three groups: high-, intermediate-, and low-quality. The modified DISCERN tool was used to evaluate the reliability of the YouTube videos. Video parameters were compared between the groups according to the quality of the videos. Results: Of the 51 videos evaluated, according to the GQS, 54.9% (n = 28) were of high-quality, 35.3% (n = 18) were of intermediate-quality, and 9.8% (n = 5) were of low-quality, respectively. When the video parameters were compared among the groups, there were no significant differences in the number of views, likes, dislikes, or comments per day (p > 0.05). However, there was a significant difference in the DISCERN scores between the groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: YouTube can be deemed as a predominant source for high-quality videos on dysphagia exercise and compensated maneuvers. However, YouTube should be accepted as a mixed pool, with high-, intermediate-, and low-quality videos. Therefore, healthcare professionals, such as physicians and therapists, should verify the suitability and quality of the video, and suggest it to the patient, to ensure that the patient obtains the appropriate information.
