Abstract Digital coding and digital modulation are the foundation of modern information science. The combination of digital technology with metamaterials provides a powerful scheme for spatial and temporal controls of electromagnetic waves. Such a technique, however, has thus far been limited to the control of free-space light. Its application to plasmonics to shape subwavelength fields still remains elusive. Here, we report the design and experimental realization of a tunable conformal plasmonic metasurface, which is capable of digitally coding and modulating designer surface plasmons at the deep-subwavelength scale. Based on dynamical switching between two discrete dispersion states in a controlled manner, we achieve digital modulations of both amplitude and phase of surface waves with nearly 100% modulation depth on a single device. Our study not only introduces a new approach for active dispersion engineering, but also constitutes an important step towards the realization of subwavelength integrated plasmonic circuits.

Using the semiclassical approach for the description of the propagation of the electromagnetic waves in optically active isotropic media we derive a new formula for the circular dichroism parameter. The theory is based on the idea of the time damped electromagnetic wave interacting with the molecules of the sample. In this theory, the Lambert-Beer law need not be taken as an empirical law, however, it follows naturally from the requirement that the electromagnetic wave obeys the Maxwell equations.

Purpose Neutrality is a much debated value in library and information science (LIS). The “neutrality debate” is characterised by opinionated discussions in contrasting contexts. The purpose of this paper is to fill a gap in the literature by bringing these conceptions together holistically, with potential to deepen understanding of LIS neutrality. Design/methodology/approach First, a literature review identified conceptions of neutrality reported in the LIS literature. Second, seven phenomenographic interviews with LIS professionals were conducted across three professional sectors. To maximise variation, each sector comprised at least one interview with a professional of five or fewer years’ experience and one with ten or more years’ experience. Third, conceptions from the literature and interviews were compared for similarities and disparities. Findings In four conceptions, each were found in the literature and interviews. In the literature, these were labelled: “favourable”, “tacit value”, “social institutions” and “value-laden profession”, whilst in interviews they were labelled: “core value”, “subservient”, “ambivalent”, and “hidden values”. The study’s main finding notes the “ambivalent” conception in interviews is not captured by a largely polarised literature, which oversimplifies neutrality’s complexity. To accommodate this complexity, it is suggested that future research should look to reconcile perceptions from either side of the “neutral non-neutral divide” through an inclusive normative framework. Originality/value This study’s value lies in its descriptive methodology, which brings LIS neutrality together in a holistic framework. This framework brings a contextual awareness to LIS neutrality lacking in previous research. This awareness has the potential to change the tone of the LIS neutrality debate.

We consider the stability against long-wavelength small parallel perturbations of a class of exact standing wave solutions of the equations that describe an unmagnetized relativistic overdense cold electron plasma. The main feature of these nonlinear waves is a circularly polarized transverse component of the electric field periodically modulated in the longitudinal direction. Using an analytical method developed by Rowlands we obtain a dispersion relation valid for long-wavelength perturbations. This dispersion relation is a biquadratic equation in the phase velocity of the perturbations whose coefficients are very complicated functions of the two parameters used to define the nonlinear waves: the normalized ion density and a quantity related to the modulation depth. This dispersion relation is discussed for the whole range of the two parameters revealing, in particular, the existence of a region in parameter space where the nonlinear waves are stable.

Surface plasmon polaritons are electromagnetic waves coupled to collective electron oscillations propagating along metal-dielectric interfaces, exhibiting a bosonic character. Recent experiments involving surface plasmons guided by wires or stripes allowed the reproduction of quantum optics effects, such as antibunching with a single surface plasmon state, coalescence with a two-plasmon state, conservation of squeezing, or entanglement through plasmonic channels. We report the first direct demonstration of the wave-particle duality for a single surface plasmon freely propagating along a planar metal-air interface. We develop a platform that enables two complementary experiments, one revealing the particle behavior of the single-plasmon state through antibunching, and the other one where the interferences prove its wave nature. This result opens up new ways to exploit quantum conversion effects between different bosonic species as shown here with photons and polaritons.

Various activities in the community and education today are all digital, automatic and move from manual to online. This paper aims to formulate a strategy and approach to implementing school counseling in facing the 4.0 industrial revolution. Based on the discussion it can be concluded that the School Counselor / Counselor requires a new approach in preparing students / counselors to have competence and take opportunities in the changes to face the industrial revolution 4.0. The mellinial generation in the industrial revolution era 4.0 has the advantage of carrying out various activities at the same time, creative and prioritizing equality, critical and contributing in various ways. BK service programs and models needed by mellinial generation use more digital technology (online). School BK / Counselor teachers are required to have the ability to implement methods / service techniques oriented to students / counselors, with strategies, namely: encouraging and facilitating the generation of mellinial ideas -ide creative and innovative, modify ideas in giving birth to feedback, provide feedback and use information and experience formulating approaches / strategies and models of guidance and counseling services according to the needs of the next generation.
