The Dynamics of Society-in-the-Self

In the field of tension between globalization and localization, a set of new phenomena is emerging showing that society is not simply a social environment of self and identity but works in their deepest regions: self-radicalization, self-government, self-cure, self-nationalization, self-internationalization, and even self-marriage. The consequence is that the self is faced with an unprecedented density of self-parts, called I-positions in this theory. In the field of tension between boundary-crossing developments in the world and the search for an identity in a local niche, a self emerges that is characterized by a great variety of contradicting and heterogeneous I-positions and by large and unexpected jumps between different positions as the result of rapid and unexpected changes in the world. The chapter argues that such developments require a new vision of the relationship between self and society.

With the advent of new technologies, the man begins to experience a significant change in the perception of the other, time and space. The acceleration of time promoted by new technology does not allow the exercise of affection for the consolidation of ties, relations take narcissists hues seeking immediate gratification and the other is understood as a continuation of the self, the pursuit of pleasure. It is the acceleration of time, again, which leads man to present the need for immediate, always looking for the new – not new – in an attempt to fill an inner space that is emptied. The retention of concepts and pre-stressing of temporality are liquefied, become fleeting. We learn to live in the world and the relationship with the other in a frivolous and superficial way. The psychic structure, facing new phenomena experienced, loses temporalize capacity and expand its spatiality, it becomes pathological. Post-modern inability to retain the past, to analyze the information received and reflect, is one of the responsible for the mental illness of today's society. Individuals develop three types of cognitions in the aftermath of a traumatic experience: negative cognitions about the self, negative cognitions about the world, and self-blame (Foa et al., 1999). Although the relationship of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and posttraumatic cognitions has been supported in literature, memory-related responses affecting this relationship need further exploration. It was the intention of the present study to address this gap by examining the moderating role of emotional intensity of trauma memory in the relationship between posttraumatic cognitions and PTSD symptoms. In a sample of survivors of typhoon Haiyan (N = 632), one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded, it was found that in general, negative cognitions about the self and the world, but not self-blame, predict PTSD symptoms; and emotional intensity of trauma memory generally moderates the relationship between posttraumatic cognitions and PTSD. The findings of the study would be useful in the development and enhancement of interventions to help the survivors of natural disasters in maintaining their mental health and wellbeing.

The concept that a traumatic experience, such as a cancer, can lead to a positive change and transformation of self, life and relationships was named as post-traumatic growth (PTG). A large amount of research measured PTG in cancer survivors arguing an interpretation of the construct as an outcome. Recently, qualitative research shows different types of narrative of PTG, but the narrative markers and their functions of transformation remain still unclear. Within a mixed-method, we aim to highlight the narrative markers and their transformative functions, underlying the PTG, within 12 cancer survivors’ narratives with medium/high and medium/low level of PTG. A redemptive sequence analysis was carried out. In the narratives with high/medium PTG we find a specific transformative function on-thinking focused transformation founded on the change/expansion of the own internal criteria to interpret the relationship with the world centralizing the self in the present and future; in the narratives with medium/low PTG we find an on-acting focused transformation, founded on the change of the operational procedures aimed to live centered on the present and on its moments.

Keeping aside discussions about theories of depiction of photography and the epistemic value of photography from the viewer’s perspective, I reconsider this techne from the photographers’ entire act of photographing. It presents the quest of the possibility to regain the world by the art of photography, especially in a situation where human consciousness of the living environment is overwhelmed by the photographic effects. The nature of the current technological environment—while disguising the manifestation of pure humanity, in the sense that it is the externalization of technology due to human nature—is completely destructive. Today, trying to save or regenerate philosophy should be nothing more than seeking a way for human beings to refuse being incorporated as an automaton in an endless track of automated reproduction processes. As one of those who wish to find a way to reconstruct the relationship between humans and nature or to reveal that human existence can only be established in such correlation, I seek a way of breathing human freedom, momentarily disputing this automated living and social environment. In other words, to regain or to play the art of photography, to unsettle what usually works as concrete support for the cognitive transformation making us unconsciously think of the technological environment as something inevitable and natural. It would be presenting a temporary retreat and a more positive way forward.

Readers have long acknowledged John Donne's lament for the decay of the world in the two Anniversarie poems commemorating Elizabeth Drury. What has not been acknowledged is the extent to which the second of these poems stages the reluctance of the soul to depart from the carcass of the earth so vividly depicted in the first. In The Second Anniversarie, Donne does something unprecedented in early modern literature: he gives voice to a soul that cannot bear to leave its earthly body behind. This essay argues that Donne represents a mutual longing between soul and body that stands in marked contrast to conventional Protestant depictions of the relationship between the two parts of the self. His explanation for such mutual longing, I contend, derives from his belief in the corporeal origins of the soul. (RT)

The article examines the problem of identity realization in the modern information society. The authors analyze the concept of identity in comparison with the concept of self, reveal the features of the manifestation and deformation of identity, and explore ways to generate multiple identities. The study of the concept of identity is based on the worldview principles inherent in different epochs. An attempt is made to give a complete (holographic) picture of identity, and the question is raised about the criteria for distinguishing genuine identity from non-genuine (pseudo-identity). The relationship between the concepts of "I" and self is studied, identification is presented as a process of predication of "I". In the structure of identity, such features as constancy and variability are distinguished. On this basis, the classical and non-classical identities are distinguished and their characteristics are given. It is shown that the breakup of these components into independent parts results in the complete loss of the object's identity, which leads to its disintegration and death. It is shown that in the conditions of fluid reality, identity turns from a stabilizing factor into a situational one, which encourages the subject to constantly choose an identity. The conditions of transformation of identification into a diffuse process that loses the strict unambiguous binding of the subject to something fixed and defined are considered. Due to this, the identity of the subject is "smeared" all over the world. As a result of this process, the subject loses the need to identify itself with anything: it "collapses" into itself. As a result, there is a contradiction of identification: the multiplicity of identities gives the subject a huge choice between them, at the same time due to the diffusion of identity (its smearing around the world) the selection procedure itself loses its meaning. But if the identity is lost, there are problems with the self, so it turns out to be the end of the existence of the person himself. Therefore, in all the transformations of identities in the modern world, it is important that it is preserved.

Straipsnyje analizuojamas pramoginio apokalipsės kino ir kasdienybės santykis. Kinematografinius pasaulio pabaigos vaizdus ir kasdienybę įprasta traktuoti per jų tarpusavio opoziciją. Tačiau straipsnyje parodoma, jog tokia įprasta traktuotė yra smarkiai modifikuojama, jei domėn priimama kasdienybės  kontrfaktinių negatyvių galimybių sritis.Kaip argumentavo anglų teoretikas A. Giddensas, įprastoje kasdienių veiksmų, įvykių ir situacijų tėkmėje kontrfaktinės negatyvios galimybės yra suskliaustos ir užblokuotos, nes gresia kasdienio subjekto egzistencijai. Kad ir kokios, globalios ar lokalios, būtų kontrfaktinės galimybės – nuo Armagedono iki banalaus komiško eksceso, – jos neutralizuojamos kaip ardančios įprastos kasdienybės nustatytą tvarką.Apokalipsės kinas aktyvuoja suskliaustas kontrfaktines galimybes, bet kartu sukuria specifinį mechanizmą jas neutralizuoti. Taigi tai, kas kasdienybėje funkcionuoja savaime, beveik automatiškai, apokalipsės kine eksploatuojama intencionaliai. Usually cinematic images of the end of the world and the routine everyday are treated through the prism of their mutual opposition. It is argued, however, that such interpretation should be essentially modified, by taking into account the realm of the negative counterfactual possibilities of the everyday.As Anthony Giddens has put it, in the habitual flow of everyday actions, events and situations, counterfactual negative possibilities are bracketed out and blocked, since negative counterfactual world threatens the self-identity of the everyday subject. All the counterfactual possibilities, irrespective to theirlocal or global character, small misunderstandings or Armageddon, are neutralized as something that destroys the pre-established everyday order. Apocalypse cinema activates bracketed counterfactual possibilities but also creates the special mechanism to neutralize them. Procedure, which functions in the ordinary everyday automatically, is created intentionally in the apocalypse cinema. In the cinematic relationship “to see – to be seen”, a spectatoris given the privileged position that allows him/her to see, but remain unseen, not affected by the images of the global destruction.Key words: apocalypse movie, the everyday, negative counterfactual possibilities.

Resumo Este artigo objetiva a análise do espaço amazônico por meio das representações geográficas contidas na obra Amazônia: Natureza, Homem e Tempo, a qual apresenta a história da região em dois tempos: o primeiro num período de expedições em nossos rios, descrito nas obras de cronistas europeus nos séculos XVI e XVII. E num segundo tempo onde ressalta a economia regional baseada nos produtos da floresta. Elucida-se como se deu a descoberta do principal vetor de riqueza daquela época, a borracha, seu uso pelos indígenas e sua consagração na economia mundial. No entanto, a borracha teve seu declínio e levou consigo toda a riqueza, deixando apenas a paisagem bucólica. Também, destacamos a ocupação populacional, mostrando personagens fundamentais na formação social amazônica. Descreve-se ainda um terceiro tempo amazônico que mostra uma nova perspectiva para a região, enaltecendo a relação homem e natureza pautada no viés ecológico que ganhou força com os movimentos sociais e ambientalistas, uma nova visão acerca do espaço da floresta, divergindo das ambições ou da lógica da economia mundial.Palavras-chave: espaço amazônico, representações geográficas, formação social, borracha. AbstractThis article aims to analyze the Amazon region through geographic representations contained in the Amazon work: Nature, Man and Time, which presents the history of the area in two stages: the first a period of expeditions in our rivers, described in the works of chroniclers Europeans in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. And a second time it emphasizes the regional economy based on forest products. it elucidates how was the discovery of the main vector of wealth that time, rubber, its use by indigenous people and their consecration in the world economy. However, the rubber had its decline and took all the wealth, leaving only the bucolic landscape. By using the concept of the Self as the human personality in its totality, as defined by Carl Gustav Jung and furthered by P. Ricoeur (the theory of narrative identity, the Self defined as an identity constructed by narrative configuration, the dialectics of the discovery of the other in one’s own Self and one’s own Self in the Other), this work will focus in the analysis of metaphors which express the Self of the auto-diegetic narrator as can be found in the autobiographical discourse of Vesna Parun. The corpus of this research is to be found in selected texts from her volume Noć za pakost. Moj život u 40 vreća (2001). From the first chapter of this volume [which consists of the following works of autobiography and essays: Poljubac života (1993), Do zalaska sunca hodajući za kamilicom (1958), Pod muškim kišobranom (1986)] the reader comes to realise that, for this author, the writing of autobiography is itself a problem of self-expression and that she had constantly deferred it, while, on the other hand, feeling a great compulsion from within to do so. This sense of paradox finds its reflection in some of the constitutive elements which can be found in her autobiographical discourse. In the relationship between literature and reality, which is something which the genre of autobiography questions in its own way, the author noticeably distances herself from the mere documentary transmission of factual information from her life. A reflection of this can be seen in the negation of a strict chronology of events and confessions, as she makes recourse to a technique which uses collage and appears fragmentary; furthermore, here prose here has a lyrical quality, negating "metaphor as a literary device" and transforming it into "literature as metaphor". The autobiographical prose of Vesna Parun is especially dense with metaphor, and it can be concluded that it expresses her Self. Attention is directed here to three metaphors in particular – the umbrella, which can be both "masculine" and "feminine", a map of the world, on the wall of every house in Vesna’s community, as well the sack, which is followed by the symbolic number 40, as many in which she could fill her life in. Besides the metaphors mentioned here, what will be proposed here is that in the autobiographical discourse of Vesna Parun literature itself is presented as metaphor of her Self, appearing to the reader as significantly (auto)meta-textual.

The prevalence of smoking is explained by social norms in society in most countries of the world, the force of the narcotic action of tobacco poisons, and the realization of interests of large transnational monopolies. A person who starts smoking gradually develops a physical and psychological dependence on nicotine: 80% of people who begin experimenting with cigarettes get "hooked" and quickly become regular smokers. Almost all those who start smoking under the age of 18 experience difficulties aspiring to get rid of this vice till the end of their days. The analysis of the content and orientation of the subculture of tobacco smokers allows speaking about it as an antisystem and an extremely negative phenomenon, since it contributes to the inclusion and fixation of tobacco smoking. The complexity of the relationship between tobacco smokers and the different levels of their social environment determines the relevance of the study set out in the article.
