Fire, Flowers, and Dinosaurs

The Mesozoic Era is the geological interval comprising the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods, and it is best known for the rise and fall of the dinosaurs. The Mesozoic began around 250 million years ago and continued to around 66 million years ago—a not inconsiderable chunk of geological time, and framed by mass extinctions at its beginning and end. Fifty years ago there were very few published papers on fire in deep time, but the most important one, which I’ve touched on before, was ‘Forest fire in the Mesozoic’, by Tom Harris of the University of Reading. Tom was an important scientist, one of the leading palaeobotanists in the world. Energetic and passionate about his fossil plants, he was a scientist with broad interests, and given to experimentation and lateral thinking. The evidence that Tom used in his paper on fires in the Mesozoic was limited to only a couple of charcoal occurrences in these rocks. The Permian Period ended with the biggest known mass extinction in Earth history, when life was almost wiped out. Whole ecosystems collapsed. So what would the world have looked like at the start of the Triassic? Among whole groups of plants that had become extinct were the giant club mosses that had been the major coal-forming plants of the late Paleozoic, and the glossopterids that had dominated southern continental vegetation. In the first few million years after the extinctions, plant diversity appears to have been low, but some new plants became prominent, including the pole-like spore-bearing lycopod called Pleuromeia, and the scrambling seedplant called Dicroidium, which had fern-like foliage. The first 10 million years of the Triassic are thought to have been a time of ecosystem recovery. According to Berner’s model, the Triassic started with very low levels of oxygen in the atmosphere. Researchers had noticed that there were no coals found at the beginning of the Triassic, and this interval was called the ‘coal gap’. The problem, therefore, was that charcoal in coal could not be used as a proxy for atmospheric oxygen for this time interval.

AbstractCosmopolitanism occurred recurrently during the geologic past, especially after mass extinctions, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly known. Three theoretical models, not mutually exclusive, can lead to cosmopolitanism: (1) selective extinction in endemic taxa, (2) endemic taxa becoming cosmopolitan after the extinction and (3) an increase in the number of newly originated cosmopolitan taxa after extinction. We analyzed an updated occurrence dataset including 831 middle Permian to Middle Triassic ammonoid genera and used two network methods to distinguish major episodes of ammonoid cosmopolitanism during this time interval. Then, we tested the three proposed models in these case studies. Our results confirm that at least two remarkable cosmopolitanism events occurred after the Permian–Triassic and late Smithian (Early Triassic) extinctions, respectively. Partitioned analyses of survivors and newcomers revealed that the immediate cosmopolitanism event (Griesbachian) after the Permian–Triassic event can be attributed to endemic genera becoming cosmopolitan (model 2) and an increase in the number of newly originated cosmopolitan genera after the extinction (model 3). Late Smithian cosmopolitanism is caused by selective extinction in endemic taxa (model 1) and an increase in the number of newly originated cosmopolitan genera (model 3). We found that the survivors of the Permian–Triassic mass extinction did not show a wider geographic range, suggesting that this mass extinction is nonselective among the biogeographic ranges, while late Smithian survivors exhibit a wide geographic range, indicating selective survivorship among cosmopolitan genera. These successive cosmopolitanism events during severe extinctions are associated with marked environmental upheavals such as rapid climate changes and oceanic anoxic events, suggesting that environmental fluctuations play a significant role in cosmopolitanism.


Many phenomena that have traditionally been called ‘mass extinctions’ are in fact clusters of extinction episodes roughly associated in geological time. This is the case with the latest Ordovician, late Devonian, mid-Cretaceous, latest Cretaceous and Late Eocene-Oligocene extinctions. Several of these clusters are caused, each episode by a different causal factor. Such mass extinctions are then due to the coincidence of various processes in the environment, and they can hardly be considered as individual events. The latest Permian mass extinction, however, is caused by a single process that affected the global ocean-atmosphere system. In the late Permian, the world ocean was full of deposits rich in organic matter, which enhanced nutrient recycling. After oxygen was brought to the sea floor (by whatever process), nutrients began to sink to the sea-bottom, and the resulting nutrient deficiency must have caused mass extinction in the sea. Oxidation of huge amounts of organic matter and associated sediments at the sea bottom must have drawn oxygen from the atmosphere, and the resulting fall in atmospheric oxygen must have contributed to extinctions on land.

A joint center has been established by the University of Pittsburgh and the Excerpta Medica Foundation. The basic objective of the Center is to seek ways in which the health sciences community may achieve increasingly convenient and economical access to scientific findings. The research center will make use of facilities and resources of both participating institutions. Cooperating from the University of Pittsburgh will be the School of Medicine, the Computation and Data Processing Center, and the Knowledge Availability Systems (KAS) Center. The KAS Center is an interdisciplinary organization engaging in research, operations, and teaching in the information sciences.Excerpta Medica Foundation, which is the largest international medical abstracting service in the world, with offices in Amsterdam, New York, London, Milan, Tokyo and Buenos Aires, will draw on its permanent medical staff of 54 specialists in charge of the 35 abstracting journals and other reference works prepared and published by the Foundation, the 700 eminent clinicians and researchers represented on its International Editorial Boards, and the 6,000 physicians who participate in its abstracting programs throughout the world. Excerpta Medica will also make available to the Center its long experience in the field, as well as its extensive resources of medical information accumulated during the Foundation’s twenty years of existence. These consist of over 1,300,000 English-language _abstract of the world’s biomedical literature, indexes to its abstracting journals, and the microfilm library in which complete original texts of all the 3,000 primary biomedical journals, monitored by Excerpta Medica in Amsterdam are stored since 1960.The objectives of the program of the combined Center include: (1) establishing a firm base of user relevance data; (2) developing improved vocabulary control mechanisms; (3) developing means of determining confidence limits of vocabulary control mechanisms in terms of user relevance data; 4. developing and field testing of new or improved media for providing medical literature to users; 5. developing methods for determining the relationship between learning and relevance in medical information storage and retrieval systems’; and (6) exploring automatic methods for retrospective searching of the specialized indexes of Excerpta Medica.The priority projects to be undertaken by the Center are (1) the investigation of the information needs of medical scientists, and (2) the development of a highly detailed Master List of Biomedical Indexing Terms. Excerpta Medica has already been at work on the latter project for several years.

There began a real interest in the universities of the Muslim world for the Arabic language by providing specialized courses for this purpose since the early eighties and  the International Islamic University Malaysia established in 1983 has been the most active university in this regard. And this activity of the university drew the interest of the researcher who found it worthy of investigation and scientific documentation as well as of revision, if necessary, not in order to pay tribute to the experience, but for taking advantage and learning from specialists interested in this vital field of the fields of Arabic language service which is actually service of Islam and its civilization considering the strong connection between Islam and the Arabic language, the language of the Qur’Én , the most distinctive feature of Islamic identity and resilience of Islamic civilization.

There is a culture of disengagement from social consideration in engineering disciplines. This means that first year engineering students, who arrive planning to change the world through engineering, lose this passion as they progress through the engineering curriculum. The community driven technology innovation and investment program described in this paper is an attempt to reverse this trend by fusing community engagement with the normal engineering design process. This approach differs from existing project or trip based approaches – outreach – because the focus is on local communities with which the university team forms a long-term partnership through weekly in-person meetings and community driven problem statements – engagement.

The purpose of looking at Indian universities in a comparative perspective is obviously to locate it among higher education institutions across the world and to identify its strengths and weaknesses in the advancement of learning and research. In doing so, one can discern the directions for reform in order to put the university system in a competitive advantage for an emerging knowledge society. This chapter looks at the current state of universities in India and highlights the initiatives under way for change and proposes required policy changes.

This is the first truly critical edition, taking account of the changes that Hardy made over twenty-five years. It includes a new chronology and bibliography and substantially revised notes.

It is clear that construction and demolition wastes (CDW) are constantly increasing throughout the world and these wastes can be used effectively to minimize the consumption of natural resources in the manufacture of more sustainable concrete. The CDW occupy an important segment of world waste production and its generation reached approximately 3 billion tons in 2012 in 40 countries [1]. Although this topic has been studied in the world, it is still valid for the reuse of waste that is constantly increasing, and although in many countries there are already examples of its use this type of concrete in Colombia and in the Medellìn city lacks applications. This project proposes the application of a sustainable concrete made with CDW and coal ash in the Medellín city for its implementation in the construction of urban furniture. A university community diagnosis of the needs in terms of furnishing was made. With the design reached, a modular chair was proposed to enable spaces within the university. The mechanical characteristics of the concrete and the design of the chair are evaluated and a simulation is done through finite elements to evaluate the viability of the proposed concrete, finding that with these properties is possible to manufacture durable and sustainable furniture that serves as an example for the application of sustainable materials
