Oxford Studies in Experimental Philosophy Volume 3

The papers collected in this third volume of Oxford Studies in Experimental Philosophy illustrate the ways in which the field continues to broaden, taking on new methodological approaches and interacting with substantive theories from an ever wider array of disciplines. As the papers themselves clearly show, some recent research in experimental philosophy is going more deeply into well-established questions in the field, but at the same time, other strands of research are exploring issues that hardly appeared at all in the field even a few years ago. Thus, we see the introduction of new empirical and statistical methods (network analysis), new theoretical approaches (formal semantics), and the development of entirely new interdisciplinary connections (in the emerging field of “experimental jurisprudence”)

Rural differentiation processes have formed the backbone of rural studies. Owing to the strength of rural–urban and local–global relationships, the theoretical approaches to rural restructuring in the Anglo-Saxon world and new rurality in Latin America only have a limited capacity to explain contemporary global phenomena of rural spaces. Due to this, transverse theoretical and methodological approaches have emerged to explain social, environmental and spatial (rural) processes. Here, a new approach is proposed called the individual–global field, based on the individual–global binary category to substitute the traditional relevance of the locality–community–globality association This new approach tries to reinvigorate rural geography in a more flexible way, based on minor theory, to adapt to all the phenomena that can occur globally. In any case, various spatial planes are proposed, dominated by specific socioeconomic processes on which the rural individual would move.

The notion that queer theory and feminism are inevitably in tension with one another has been well developed both by queer and feminist theorists. Queer theorists have critiqued feminist theories for being anti-sex, overly moralistic, essentialist, and statist. Feminist theorists have rejected queer theory as being uncritically pro-sex and dangerously protective of the private sphere. Unfortunately these reductionist accounts of what constitutes a plethora of diverse, eclectic and overlapping theoretical approaches to issues of sex, gender, and sexuality, often fail to account for the circumstances where these methodological approaches converge on legal projects aimed at advancing the complex justice interests of women and sexual minorities. A recent decision from the Ontario Court of Justice addressing a three-parent family law dispute involving gay and lesbian litigants demonstrates why recognition of the convergences between feminist and queer legal theories can advance both queer and feminist justice projects. The objective of this article is to demonstrate, through different and converging interpretations of this case that draw on some of the theoretical insights offered in a new anthology called Feminist and Queer Legal Theory, one rather straight-forward claim. The claim advanced here is that activists, advocates, litigants and judges are all well served by approaching complex legal problems involving sex, sexuality and gender with as many “methods” for pursuing and achieving justice as possible.

In the broadest sense, personality refers to stable inter‐individual variability in behavioural organisation within a particular population. Researching personality in human as well as nonhuman species provides unique possibilities for comparisons across species with different phylogenies, ecologies and social systems. It also allows insights into mechanisms and processes of the evolution of population differences within and between species. The enormous diversity across species entails particular challenges to methodology. This paper explores theoretical approaches and analytical methods of deriving dimensions of inter‐individual variability on different population levels from a personality trait perspective. The existing diversity suggests that some populations, especially some species, may exhibit different or even unique trait domains. Therefore, a methodology is needed that identifies ecologically valid and comprehensive representations of the personality variation within each population. I taxonomise and compare current approaches in their suitability for this task. I propose a new bottom–up approach—the behavioural repertoire approach—that is tailored to the specific methodological requirements of comparative personality research. Initial empirical results in nonhuman primates emphasise the viability of this approach and highlight interesting implications for human personality research. Trends in the development of Ukrainian mining companies have shown that it is important to increase their financial potential. This necessitates an assessment of the financial capacity of business entities to determine the directions, methods for attracting additional and optimizing existing financial resources. The aim of this research is to determine a methodological approach to determining the level of financial potential of economic entities through the use of mathematical and statistical methods to identify the current financial status of economic entities and financial reserves of development. General scientific and special research methods, analysis and synthesis, graphical analysis, taxonomic analysis, cluster analysis, as well as abstract and logical methods were used to achieve the goal. Theoretical approaches to defining the essence of the concepts of “potential”, “financial potential of economic entities” were systematized to specify the boundaries of each of the concepts, its components. Definition of the essence of the “financial potential of economic entities” concept was proposed. A set of financial indicators to assess the level of financial potential through a priori ranking based on the analysis of literature sources was developed. The selected financial indicators were grouped according to the financial potential components; the integral indicators for each group were calculated. Business entities in the mining industry in Ukraine were grouped into clusters according to calculated taxonomic indicators. Besides, the level of financial potential for each cluster was determined. The methodological approach to the diagnosis of the level of financial potential of economic entities was developed using mathematical and statistical methods. This made it possible to identify trends in the development of financial potential, which allows forming measures to increase it.

Introduction. In an unstable market environment, it is quite difficult to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of marketing activities for agricultural enterprises using traditional methodological approaches. We believe that now there is a need to develop methodological approaches that will help to establish the relationship in the marketing management system, taking into account the changing market conditions and the resource potential of the agricultural enterprise. Methods. The following methods are used to achieve this goal, namely: methods of monographic comparative analysis and specific methods in the field of analysis of theoretical and analytical foundations of marketing activities to determine the strategic prospects of marketing activities, identify effective measures to improve marketing activities in agricultural enterprises. Research methods are based on theoretical developments and scientific tools, which includes analysis and evaluation of formulated methodological approaches to assess the effectiveness of management of marketing activities of agricultural enterprises on the basis of quantitative and qualitative indicators. The research methodology also provides for the generalization of scientific sources that explore the rational aspects of management and increase the effectiveness of marketing activities of enterprises in the agricultural sector of Ukraine. Results. Theoretical approaches to understanding the management of enterprise marketing activities are summarized, and the distinction and fundamental relationship between the categories «marketing performance» and «marketing efficiency» are established. It has been found that the main purpose of these categories is to achieve the desired results, in which the achievement does not take into account the method and the costs incurred, and the efficiency takes into account the way with the resources expended. The formation of a holistic system for managing the effectiveness of marketing activities is achieved through synchronization of the process of influencing marketing tools in order to create an overall synergistic effect. We have developed a balanced system of indicators of the enterprise to evaluate the effectiveness of marketing activities of the enterprise, which considers the specific activity and business orientation of the agricultural enterprise. It is proved that, depending on strategic goals, business orientations of agrarian enterprise are determined, which set the future vector of business development, therefore marketing activity should promote business development. Discussions. Promising areas of further research are the development of methods for analyzing the cost-effectiveness of marketing activities in the agricultural sector. Keywords: management, marketing complex, business orientation, strategic goals, performance, efficiency, production resources.

Personal and professional potential is an important psychological concept that defines one of the main features of human self-realization, the formation of his life path, the formation of life strategies. The study of personal and professional potential is a rather difficult task, because this concept is still relatively new in modern psychological science andhas not the same definition within existing psychological theories and schools, so any attempt to empirically operationalize this concept is a difficult task. The article is devoted to the study of the problem of formation of personal and professional potential. The study of personal and professional potential is quite a difficult task, since this concept is still quite new in modern psychological science and does not have the same definition within the framework of existing psychological theories andschools. The material describes the existing methodological approaches to this problem. Based on the existing theoretical approaches, the authorproposes to consider the structure of personal and professional potential. The components of personal and professional potential development are highlighted. An empirical study is carried out and the process of formation of personal and professional potential during training at the university is considered. Empirically, the importance of integrating various areas of life in professional self-determination is shown, as well as the social importance of the profession.

How can we enhance theory-method alignment when studying collective leadership? We propose that leveraging methodological approaches that are powerful enough to address three primary challenges of collective leadership—the incorporation of time, context, and multiple levels—will promote a more robust body of collective leadership research and practice. In particular, we review and integrate three complementary methodological approaches—organizational discourse analysis, relational event modeling, and dynamic network analysis—which have the flexibility to address these challenges. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the utility of these methodological approaches for addressing major methodological challenges within the field of collective leadership. Through this effort, we aim to facilitate conversation across disparate streams of research and encourage researchers to explore how novel research questions and perspectives might be advanced through leveraging these methods, either in isolation or in combination.

AbstractThis paper presents theoretical and methodological approaches to Terminology that are well known in Brazil, giving special attention to the production of dictionaries and similar reference work based on corpora. A collation of the many theoretical approaches and terminography practices is provided, inviting the reader to learn more about Special-Language Lexicography (SLL) in Brazil. In order to better illustrate Brazilian terminography production, a background on three different terminographic reference works recently developed in the Brazilian scenario using corpora is brought forth: a dictionary about ceramic tiles, a glossary of Oncomastology and an extensive dictionary of Dermatology. At the end of this paper, information about computational resources, such as ontologies and tools for representation of text-based content, is introduced, indicating new methodological approaches for new dictionaries.
